THURBER, Blanche Irene - Freeport, passed away in Tideview Terrace Nursing Home, Digby, on February 28, 2008. The eldest of eight children, Blanche was born on March 18, 1909, a daughter of Holland and Edith (CANN) THOMPSON, Port Maitland, Yarmouth Co. Blanche is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Roger) TEED, Freeport; grandsons, Jeffrey (Helen), Freeport; Stephen (Denice), Bridgewater; great-granddaughters, Amanda and Alyssa TEED, Freeport; Sasha TEED, Bridgewater; sister, Alice HALEY, Port Coquitlam, B.C.; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Preston Ellsbree THURBER in 1978; brothers, Borden, Malcolm, Earl; sisters, Jeannette, Iris, and Eleanor. Blanche was the eldest member of Freeport United Baptist Church, a member of the Fairisle Rebekahs, and a lifetime member of the Isabel Tibert Women's Missionary Society in Freeport. Blanche was an avid quilter in her day, and for many years, a faithful member of the "Sewing Circle". There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. MOREHOUSE, Oscar W. - 95, Hantsport, passed away in Victoria, B.C., on March 4, 2008. Born in Centreville, Digby Co., he was the son of the late Nelson and Ada MOREHOUSE. During the Second World War he served with the RCAF in Britain and North Africa. A machinist by trade, he was employed for many years in Hantsport and later in Wolfville. He was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, P.D.D.G.M., and recipient of the 50 year Jewel. He is survived by nieces, Elaine LEANDER and Gwen MAINS, both of United States. He was predeceased in 2006 by his beloved wife, Ruth (TURNER), and earlier by sisters, Rita, Vera and Murial (all of the United States). Throughout all their retirement years in Victoria, he and Ruth had frequent contact with their many friends in Nova Scotia, and with the Hantsport Baptist Church as members. Their cremated remains have returned "home" for interment in Riverbank Cemetery, and a memorial service for both of them will be held on April 30 at 2 p.m. in Hantsport Baptist Church, Rev. Dan Jamer officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in their memory may be made to the church or a charity of choice. A private family graveside service will follow.

DITMARS, George Wellington "Well" - 94, Deep Brook, passed away peacefully March 4, 2008, while living at Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. He served overseas during the Second World War (1943-1946) in England and France while enlisted in the Second Field Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers, Second Division. After his military discharge, he worked for almost 30 years at CFB Cornwallis as a machinist, carpenter and locksmith. In his spare time he built two beautiful sailing boats which he named "The Susan D" and "The Donna D", and replica antique clocks. He was predeceased by his wife, Bernice (KAULBACK); his brother, Joseph, and his parents, George and Carrie. EVERETT, Arden R. - 79, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, March 7, 2008. Born in Digby, he was a son of the late Oscar and Myrtle (WHYNOT) EVERETT. In his early years, Arden worked in the dairy industry and was an employee with Canadian Tire. He was employed with the Town of Liverpool from 1956 to 1968 in the electrical department and moved on to the Nova Scotia Power until 1973 when he started his own business; "Arden and Sons Electrical Limited". He incorporated the business in 1980 and handed the company over to his sons in 2007 after 34 years. Arden enjoyed the out of doors especially nature, hunting and fishing. He was an avid gardener and planted vegetables and tended to his blueberry bushes which he took pride in every year since 1953. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pat (Soper); sons, Brian (Corrine), Western Head; Phillip (Dianne), Wilmot; Wade (Kathy), Hunt's Point; Darrin, (Janice), Mersey Point; grandchildren, Brian (Erica), Sara, Aaron, Kelsey, Sydney and Adrian; stepgrandchildren, Josh, Chantal, Andrew, Shea and Ceilidh; and step great-grandson Drew; sisters, Helen McNUTT, Oshawa, Ont.; Marjorie (Moyle) CROUSE, Bridgewater; Edna, Liverpool; brother, Lloyd (Betty), Milton. GLODE, Mary May - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing our our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, on March 9, 2008, in Glades Lodge. Born on May 24, 1915, in Bear River, Mary was raised by her late grandparents, Joanne and John PAUL. She spent much of her childhood being taught the art of basket making. While accompanying her grandmother, who was the midwife until the 1930s, she welcomed life into the world. She was an accomplished seamstress, and loved to knit, crochet, bake, play bingo, and travel. Mary was a member of St. Paul's Church, the St. Paul's Women's Association, and the St. John Ambulance Association. Mary's life was centred around her strong belief in God, and her family. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Joan Glode (Bob BACKEN), Anne NEIL, and Mary LeRUE (Jay GORDON); grandchildren, Jerry LeRUE (Holly MOSER), Terry LeRUE (Lisa KING), and Darcy DEARMAN (Brandon); great-grandchildren, Ethan LeRUE, Jonah DEARMAN, Ashley LeRUE; niece, Virginia COPPING (Newton). Mary was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in January 1950; and her son, Kenneth, in January 2003. Heartfelt thanks to Gladys Feener and Diana Weaver for their care, concern and friendship over the past three years, she appreciated and cared about you. Born on November 7, 1919, in Ashmore, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late David and Edna (BOUGEOIS) KINNEY. Frances was employed for many years in ladies retail clothing sales, retiring in 1986. She was an active member of the Seniors Club and a member of the Loyal Workers, Port Williams. Frances was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed walking, gardening and baking. Besides her parents, Frances was predeceased by her husband, Walter, and brother, Percy. She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Wanda (Robert) RAMEY, Coldbrook; granddaughters, Rachel LEONARD (Matthew), Dartmouth; Dr. Patricia RAMEY, New Jersey; sister, Hilda ALLEN, New Minas, and two great-granddaughters. MELANSON, Reed Henry - Born March 9, 1919, passed away on March 17, 2008. Born in Weymouth Mills, he was a son of the late Herbert and Isabel (AMERO) MELANSON. Reed joined the service in 1940, went overseas in 1941, and was wounded in 1942 and spent 13 months in an English hospital. He returned to Canada in 1943 and endured many operations after. He served with the Military Police in Canada before going overseas. He truly loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and spent many years guiding Americans for deer hunting. Reed loved gardening, especially after he was unable to continue with the Department of Transportation, with which he worked for 14 years. He was busy but always found time for his family, and loved his children and grandchildren dearly. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. He leaves to mourn his wife, Evelyn (THIBODEAU); sons, Wayne (Cindy), Russell (Donna); daughter, Nancy (Ricky) THIBAULT; brother, Chester (Helen); grandchildren, Sheila, Shelley, David, Melina, Amanda, Paul, Justin, and Dayne; great-grandchildren, Delenay, Zachery, and Hunter. Frank was a veteran serving in the Second World War with the Merchant Marines. He was lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 20, Digby. Frank was a loving and caring husband, dad and grandfather, always looking forward to each visit and time together. Frank was a fisherman most of his life and then worked for years in the fish plants on Digby Neck. Most of his spare time was spent providing maintenance to summer homes in Centreville, with his wife, Phyllis. Frank enjoyed his daily visits to the wharf and chatting with fellow fishermen and friends. After moving to Tideview Terrace with his wife, he looked forward to visits from family and friends. A smile was always there for the staff of Tideview Terrace and the family appreciates each and every one that cared for him and always treated him like their own dad, or grandfather. He was a son of the late Frank and Etta (PLEASANT) CROMWELL and lived in Weymouth for most of his life. With only a grade two education, he had to find work as a young child to help support his family of 10 brothers and sisters. One of his first jobs was as a delivery boy for the Goodwin Hotel where he earned the nickname "Lightning" because he was so fast. That name stuck with him for the rest of his life. He was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 67, Weymouth. Harold was a Second World War veteran, serving for four years, first with the West Nova Regiment and then with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He ended up overseas in England, only returning when he was injured during the blitz. While convalescing in the hospital, he decided to take up drawing to pass the time. Little did he know that this new hobby would one day make him popular in his native Nova Scotia. During his lifetime, Harold worked as a commissionaire, a cook at CFB Cornwallis and custodian at Weymouth Consolidated High School. To this day he is remembered as the funny janitor who drew pictures on the blackboard for the children. He provided entertainment for the community when he built a dance hall. Everyone knew that on a Saturday night, the place to go was "Harold's Hall" and during the summer, community picnics were held there, attended by the residents of Weymouth Falls. Over the years, with a wife and family, Harold continued to develop his art. He started out working with oils and some water colours, but soon made the switch to what he is most famous for today, folk art done with pen an ink. Most of his pictures had a common theme depicting nature and people. They told stories of times past with titles such as "Good Fishing Days 1933" or "Cutting Christmas Trees Back in 1936". He often fell victim to small spelling mistakes in his titles, a flaw which told of his modest education while at the same time giving the pictures the charm they became so famous for. Harold was predeceased by brothers, Bernard and Guy CROMWELL; sisters, Mae and Christie CROMWELL; daughter, Julia CROMWELL, and grandson, Zachary CROMWELL. He is survived by wife, Esther CROMWELL, Plympton; daughters, Clara CROMWELL (Jim SMITH), Digby; Patricia CROMWELL, Toronto, Ont.; Natasha CROMWELL, Frankford, Ont.; son, Bruce (Sunanda) CROMWELL, Oshawa, Ont.; grandchildren, Dominic, Tasha, Karlon, and Tenesha; great-grandchild, Haylee; brothers, Everett CROMWELL, Shelburne; Irving CROMWELL, Halifax; Frank CROMWELL, Toronto, Ont.; sisters, Theda JACKSON, Bridgetown; Lottie STATES, Dartmouth; brothers-in-law, Vincent FRANCIS, Sudbury Ont.; Weldon FRANCIS, Weymouth; several nieces and nephews. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with Royal Canadian Legion service 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jayne's Funeral Home, Weymouth North. Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Weymouth Falls, Father William Burt officiating. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery. COMEAU, Dennis Frederick - 89, Saulnierville, died March 25, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Saulnierville, he was a son of the late Freddie and Grace (COMEAU) COMEAU. Surviving are daughter, Jeannette GAGNON, Saulnierville; son, Donnie SAULNIER, Meteghan; sister, Anna JENNINGS, Australia. He was predeceased by his wife, May; sisters, Della THIBODEAU, Gilbert's Cove; Auralie MAILMAN, Bridgewater. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Meteghan Funeral Home. Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville, Rev. Paul Belliveau officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.

GARLAND, Ruth Bernice, B.A., B.Ed. - 84, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Thursday, March 27, 2008, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born on May 23, 1923, in North Range, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late Curtis and Meda (MARSHALL) COOK. She received her early education at Digby Academy, married and moved to Windsor. Always interested in teaching, she decided in 1960 to further her education, graduating from Normal College, Truro and later from Acadia University receiving both her arts and education degrees. For 23 years she taught school in the West Hants District, then retired due to health problems. During this time she acted as co-ordinator of extension courses with Acadia to promote the advancement of teachers' education. After retirement she became active in community affairs, on the board of directors for the Seniors Games for West Hants and later on the board for the Valley Senior Games, a member of the Windsor Gliders Club for years serving as treasurer and president. Other interests included bridge and bowling. She was the proud mother of three children, Judy Lorraine, Dartmouth; Ralph Jamie, Falmouth; Clinton Curtis, West Lawrencetown. She is also survived by daughters-in-law, Joan, Falmouth, and Cynthia, West Lawrencetown; granddaughters, Bobbi-Ruth, Edmonton, Alta., and Nicole Autumn, West Lawrencetown; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Destiny, Cassidy and Fate, Edmonton, Alta.; sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Laurie BENT), New Minas, and Phyllis (Mrs. Donald BARR Jr.), Campbell River, B.C. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Ralph Ernest (2000); and by brother, Clinton, in infancy. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Saturday in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., Windsor, where funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 30. Interment will in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. DOUCETTE (ARSENAULT), Marie - 1904-2008, Nouvelle Que., formerly of Cape St. Marys, Digby Co., passed away peacefully in L'Aube Riviere Nursing Home, Nouvelle, Que., on March 27, 2008, in her 104th year. Born August 16, 1904, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by daughters, Marguerite (Stanley) DOUCETTTE, St. Omer, Que.; Alphonsene "Al" BEATTY, Halifax; Annette LeBLANC, Mercier, Que.; sons, Gaston (Jackie), Charlesbourg, Que.; Harold (Hugette), St. Phillipe de la Prairie, Que.; Victor (Marion), Nouvelle, Que.; 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and four great great- grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Alphonse; son, Omer, and grandson, Maxime. We feel blessed for having her in our lives for so long and we will continue to thank God for the blessings she brought into our lives, her undying love and guidance and the precious gift of family.
