She was a woman very highly respected , and her family have the sympathy and respect of the entire community

Died at Westport Sunday last, CAPTAIN ALBERT E. PAYSON, in the 79th year of his age, leaving a widow, formerly Miss Emily CHALLICOMBE of Newport, G.B; one brother Byron in Mass., two sisters,Mrs Thomas HICKS, Westport and Mrs Augusta CLOWERY, Granville Ferry. Captain Payson was one of the most successful master mariner's in the Atlantic provinces, sailing several large ships out of Saint John. He retired 33 years ago from the sea and opened a merchantile business at Westport.

1923? Emedee D. Robicheau

DIED OF INJURIES The death took place at Yarmouth Hospital at an early hour yesterday morning of Emedee D. ROBICHEAU, of Corberrie, Digby County. The deceased two weeks ago suffered a severe fall and sustained such serious injuries to the spinal cord, that his whole body became paralyzed. Mr. ROBICHEAU, with two of his sons, was, at the time, hunting in the woods about two miles from his home and spied, far upin a tree, a porcupine. He fired at the animal and it fell from its lofty resting place into a crotch of the tree and remained there. Mr. ROBICHEAU climbed the tree and when about twenty feet from the ground, fell, with the above results. His two sons went immediately for assistance, but not knowing the extent of their father's injuries they did not return with sufficient help and a second trip was necessary, consequently nearly three hours elapsed before Mr. ROBICHEAU reached his home. Medical aid was called when the serious condition of his injuries was discovered, and on Wednesday of last week he was brought to Yarmouth for treatment. Following that pneumonia developed, which resulted in his passing yesterday. Mr. ROBICHEAU was 35 years of age and was one of Digby County's most prosperous and progressive farmers. He was associated with many undertakings of the community and by his straightforward business principles, he was greatly admired by many persons. In politics he was a Conservative and at the last Provincial campaign he was one of the standard bearers for that county. Mr. ROBICHEAU is survived by his widow and seven small children, the youngest of whom is an infant of eight days; also his mother, one brother and two sisters. The remains were taken by the D.A.R to Corberrie yesterday, where the funeral will take place tomorrow.

MRS COLEMAN VANTASSEL Cynthia , Wife of Coleman VANTASSEL died on Monday aged 75 years. She was the daughter of the late James DALEY and was born in Culloden.Besides her husband she leaves to mourn three daughters Mrs S.E. WOODMAN , Digby; Mrs F.W. MORSE , Sydney; Mrs J.J. KEEFE , Boston and two sons by a previous marriage Elisha and Edward BUDD; also one sis ter Mrs Oscar DAKIN of Digby.

The remains of the late Mrs. Frank HANKINSON, whose death occurred suddenly in Boston, arrived Tuesday morning. Miss Esther HANKINSON, a grand-daughter who is training at the Lynn Hospital, accompanied the body home. Messrs. Scott and Thomas HANKINSON went to Yarmouth Monday to meet their sister, Miss Esther HANKINSON, who was accompanying the remains of Mrs. Frank HANKINSON, and who arrived Tuesday. The Digby Weekly Courier � February 16, 1923: Mrs. Frank Hankinson, who has been ill for some time, left Tuesday for Boston, Mass., where she will enter the Elliott Hospital; Back Bay for surgical treatment. Dr. E.O. Hallett, her physician accompanied her. Mrs. Dan MacLean who accompanied her mother as far as Yarmouth, Tuesday, returned home Wednesday. Mrs. George O. Hankinson and Mrs. E. F. Hankinson, who accompanied Mrs. Frank Hankinson, as far as Yarmouth, Tuesday, returned Wednesday.

1923 William C. HANKINSON

William C. HANKINSON, one of the oldest and best known and most highly respected citizens of Weymouth North, met death in a most tragical manner on Tuesday afternoon at about 2:30 o�clock when the urn surmounting a tombstone fell on him inflecting such injuries that he died shortly after. Mr. HANKINSON was working on his lot in the Baptist cemetery. The frost had undermined the tombstone, erected to the memory of his first wife, and he was engaged in digging around the monument with the intention of straightening it. No person witnessed the accident. Fred Lent, who happened to be working around the church was attracted by groans and upon his investigation discovered Mr. HANKINSON�s plight. Dr. E. O. Hallett, who was attending the funeral of Elijah Mullen was hurriedly summoned, but the unfortunate man was beyond medical help, dying in about fifteen minutes from his injuries. Willing hands removed the body to the house, where it was taken in charge by the undertaker. The late Mr. HANKINSON was 83 years old and for many years had been a deacon of the Baptist church, of which denomination he was a devout member. Deceased was twice married. His first wife, who was Miss Catherine JOHN, a daughter of the late Edward JOHN, and a sister of Mrs. H. S. HOYT, Charles, and Harley John and Miss Annie JOHN, of Weymouth, Captain Howard JOHN of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Stan TITUS of Digby, died about fifteen years ago. He married for the second time, Miss Eliza SUTHERLAND, of Lynn, Mass., who survives. Besides leaving a widow, one son William and one brother, Thomas C. HANKINSON of Weymouth North, also survive.

1923 Captain George W. Hains

Died at his home Kempt St. on Friday, Captain George W. HAINS, in his 66th year.He went to sea as a boy and soon aquired an officer's certificate and a master's certificate. He spent most of his career as 1st officer. He was employed with Thomson and Troop of Saint John. About 25 years ago he came to Yarmouth and joined the steamer Prince Edward and served as quartermaster and soon became 1st officer of the steamer Prince George. Later he was master of Tank steamer No. 46 of the Sugar Product's Co. of New York. Then to that company's steamer Rochelle. About 2 1/2 years ago he was compelled to resign because of ill health. He leaves a widow and three daughter's, Mrs (Capt.) Sydney FROST,St. John's, Nfld; Misses Annie and Fannie at home; two sons, William R. on the staff of the Toronto Star and Judson, with the United Fruit Comapny. Also one brother, Captain Fred HAINS, Freeport; three sisters, Mrs Annie PRIME, Freeport; Mrs Thomas ISNOR, Halifax and Miss Leota HAINS, Bridgewater. Captain HAINS' remains were taken to his home at Freeport for interment.

1923 J. Christopher Harris

J.CHRISTOPHER HARRIS The death of J. Christopher HARRIS occured at his home Thursday morning Nov. 22 nd. after a lingering illness at the age of seventy years. He was the son of Benjamin and Amanda HARRIS and has resided on the old HARRIS homestead all his life. He was a member of the Baptist Church and in politics , a loyal Liberal. The large attendence at his funeral on Sunday afternoon , testified to the respect and effection in which Mr. HARRIS was held;not only in the town itself but in adjacent villages. Very impressive services were conducted by Rev. R. G. GREGG assisted by Rev.C. M. MACK and beautiful music was rendered by the Baptist Church choir. He is survived by his wife[nee Miss ALLEN of Yarmouth ]one son Wilfred at home and a daughter Mrs SKILLINGS of Boston. Five sisters and one brother also survive

1923 Sylvanus D. Munroe

Sylvanus D. MUNROE aged 82 passed to his reward on Tuesday last. Mr. MUNROE came to Digby about 18 years ago to care for his aged friend , Mr. WELSH. His life was known and read by all men.He was held in the highest respect-was honorable in business, upright in character and a devout servant of Jesus Christ. He was a member of the Baptist Church from his youth and was a devoted church worker. The funeral was held in the Baptist church on Thursday at 2pm .A large number of friends gathered to pay their last respect to the aged Deacon. The service was conducted by Rev. I. E. NUNNS who made fitting reference to the deceased. A memorial service will be held in the Baptist Church on Sunday evening Dec. 9 at 7pm when some further reference will be made to our departed friend and brother.

1923 Mrs C. A. Jordan

MRS C. A. JORDAN The funeral took place Monday afternoon of Mary A. , wife of Councillor C.A. JORDAN , proprietor of the Columbia House . Mrs JORDAN has been ill for a long time and was for several weeks under treatment in the infirmary at Halifax. She returned home early last summer apparently much improved in health.Saturday night Mr. JORDAN built up a large fire not knowing that a rag had been put into the cold water tank. After building the fire he went out and in his absence the rag took fire and filled the house with smoke . This alarmed Mrs JORDAN . The excitement proved too much for her and she collapsed and died. She was the daughter of the late Patrick CURTIN of Windsor and was born in that town about 52 years ago. but has been a resident of Digby since 1897 . Besides her husband , she leaves one sister Mrs T. C. LYNCH of Halifax.

JUSTASON of Penfield N.B. and Miss Gertrude residing in Boston. His wife predeceased him some time ago. Local news The death of J. Boyd DALEY , aged 30 , occured at Halifax Monday night, and his remains were brought to his home in Digby Wednesday for burial. The deceased was the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth DALEY , and leaves to mourn their loss two brothers, Fred and Blair and two sisters Dorothy DALEY of Jamacia Plains Mass and Mrs S. THOMPSON of St. John. The funeral was held Thursday morning in the Roman Catholic Cemetery , Rev. Father SOMERS officiating.

1924 Capt. John Deveau

Capt. John DEVEAU , a very aged resident of Salmon River , Digby Co. passed away at that place last week. The deceased was 98 years of age and as a young man was engaged as a master of vessels in the trade between St. Mary's Bay , New Brunswick and New England States' ports.Retiring from the sea , Capt. DEVEAU for a number of years conducted a hostelry at Salmon River ,consequently he was familarly known by many persons. While in his passing Salmon River losses one of its outstanding personages. The funeral took place from St. Vincent de Paul church and owing to his very wide connection, it was largely attended.

The wee one first saw the light of day on Friday and appeared to be doing nicely until Sunday when pneumonia developed and owing to its extreme youth the child was unable to cope with the disease and succombed to the inevitable on Sunday evening to find eternal peace with the one who said" Suffer the little children to come unto me".

Digby Courier July 18, 1924 MRS ELIZA NICHOLL The death of Mrs Eliza [WELCH] NICHOLL occurred at her home in Aliston MA Saturday evening at the age of 70 ? years . She had been a partial invalid for a number of years but the end came suddenly following an attack of pleurisy. She was the daughter of the late Garrett and Sarah [SULIS] WELCH of Smith's Cove , Of Empire Loyalist stock. Her early married life was spent in Bear River . A number of years ago the family moved to the United States where they have since resided. She had a noble christian character and those who knew her best will call her Blessed. She was best known in her own home where she will be most missed.She is survived by her husband ;one son Lawrence of Boston, and three daughters Mrs E.F. JEWETT of Hartford CT and Ethel and Leila at home. The funeral was held from her late home Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. Killam , pastor of the Brighton Ave. Baptist Church. The floral remembrances were many and beautiful

Digby Courier Friday July 18, 1924 ROGER POTTER Death claimed as its victim on Wednesday of last week Roger, the oldest son of the late Edward POTTER. The end came after an illness of several weeks which the deceased bore with christian fortitude. He was a familar figure about the town and will be missed . He was a member of the Bear River Baptist Church and leaves to mourn their loss his mother , Mrs Laurie HUNT ,two sisters Mrs GLOBE of Saint John and Mrs WYMAN of Truro; and two brothers Harry of Clementsvale and William of Smith's Cove . The funeral service which was held on Friday afternoon was conducted by Rev. R.S. Gregg assisted by Rev. C. M. Mack and Rev. J. W. Smith.
