Digby Courier Friday 28 Aug, 1936 At Meteghan on Saturday morning of last week , Mrs Pierre DEVEAU , better known as Mrs Maggie DEVEAU died at her home , aged 80 years and 6 months.She was the daughter of the late Walter WELCH and Catherine [MELANSON] WELCH of Plympton. She was married 52 years ago to Pierrre DEVEAU who predeceased her 43 years She leaves to mourn their loss two sons , Edmund DEVEAU J. P. and John DEVEAU, manager of the Meteghan Shipbuilding Co.and one daughter Annie [ Mrs Arthur ROBICHAUD] two brothers James WELCH of Salem MA who came for the funeral and John of Doise City , Idaho; three sisters , Elizabeth[ Mrs Louis B. ROBICHAUD ] Calvie [ Mrs Julius DEVEAU ] and Miss Frances WELCH all of Meteghan. The funeral took place Monday morning in the Stella Maris Church , Rev. Father Maillet, of Salmon River and Rev, Father LeBlanc of St. Alphonse de Clare . The choir was led by Rev. A. Comeau with Mrs Joseph Le Blanc at the organ. The pall bearers were Walter Deveau, Andre Deveau , Andre Robichaud, Raoul Deveau, Edward and Desize J. Deveau.

Digby Courier Friday 28 Aug. 1936 Many friends have learned with regret of the passing of Peter LeCain WRIGHT at his home following a brief illness , at the age of 70 years. He was of Huguenot descent being the son of James and Eliza LECAIN WRIGHT whose ancestors came out from the Isle of Jersey in 1742 and settled in Annapolis Royal. Mr. WRIGHT was born at Lake La Rose , Annapolis County, Oct. 15, 1865 and resided in Digby for the past fifty-six years. He was an authority on the early history of railroading in Nova Scotia ,and in his youth was on the staff of the steamer Evangeline. Mr. WRIGHT was greatly loved by the younger people of the town , having given many faithful years of service at the Digby Academy , Grace United Church and IOOF Lodge, retiring six years ago owing to ill health. Survivng members of the family are Mrs Gladys BUDROW with whom he made his home:Grace [ Mrs Edward Hayden ] of Digby ; Goldie [ Mrs Lloyd FLETCHER of Amherst and Halton A. of Haverhill MA ; one sister Mrs Jane MACKINNON of Digby and brother George B. of Brookline MA ;also eight grand children . Funeral services took place yesterday afternoon from his late residence with Rev. Dr. Hodgson, pastor of the Grace United Church. officiating . Interment was in Fairview [United Church] cemetery.

The death of Mary Elizabeth BEATON occurred at the home of her sister, Miss Effie ADAMS, Birch Street, Digby, on Wednesday morning. Deceased,who was 81 years of age was born at Bay View, Digby County, 81 years ago, the daughter of the late John and Mary Anne (MORRISEY) ADAMS. Whena young girl she moved to Weymouth where she resided most of her life. In 1930, a short time after the death of her son, Arch, she came to Digby to live with her sister, Miss Effie ADAMS. Fifty years ago this February past she married, at Weymouth, Alexander BEATON, of Mabou, C.B. who precedeased her in 1917. Surviving Mrs BEATON are four sons and daughters, namely, Alexander H. BEATON, Brighton, Mass.; Herbert A. BEATON, Providence, R.I.; Irving A. BEATON, Brighton, Mass.; Clifford E. BEATON, LaHave, Nova Scotia and Mary E. BEATON, Brighton, Mass.; also two sisters, Miss Eddie ADAMS and Mrs Annie POST, of Digby. Interment took place at St Joseph's cemetery, Weymouth, N.S. on Friday morning with Rev Father D.C. MELANSON officating.During her lifetime at Weymouth, Mrs BEATON, who was a devote member of the Roman Catholic Church, was very prominent in affairs of the church and community. Her death followed an illness of little more than a week.

(condensed from Courier article,16 Jan 1937). Melvin F. STEWART,age 24, of Freeport,Digby County, died in a truck crash on the main post road between Aylesford and Auburn, on January 14,1937. Discovered by a passing motorist. "Mr. STEWART had built up a splendid fish business in the Valley. He was formerly employed by the Pines Hotel, Digby, and was well liked by all who knew him " Both parents were deceased and "he had resided with his uncle, Dr. A. F. WEIR, of Freeport. He is survived by two brothers, Jack and George, of Halifax. The body brought to Freeport for burial ".

Digby Courier 7 Jan. 1938 MRS ELIZABETH GIDNEY There occurred on Dec.20 at her home in Rossway ,the death of Mrs Elizabeth GIDNEY ,one of the oldest residents of the province. She passed her 95th birthday on Dec.8th. She was one of Digby Neck's most highlt esteemed residents and until some months ago has been very active. she was the widow of the late Johnstone GIDNEY ,who preceased her by fourteen months. Surviving her are :two daughters Mrs Charles PETERS[Elizabeth]of Centreville; Mrs Frank MUISE[ Mary] of Roxville;two sons Charles of Rossway; and William of Centreville;[who has been confined to his home for many months];two sisters Mrs Leander WHITE of Rossway; and Mrs Frances WAGNER of Sissiboo Falls and one brother Timothy ROBICHEAU of Rossway.There are also many grand children ,great grand children and several great ,great, grand children. High Mass and funeral services were conducted at the Roman Catholic Church at Rossway; by Rev. Fr. Gaudet of Plympton, on Wednesday morning . Interment was beside several children who predeceased her.

Funeral services took place yesterday afternoon from North Range Baptist Church, Rev. M.C. Higgins offficiating. She leaves five sons and 3 sisters.

1938 Dec.30 At her home , Sea Brook, Mrs Alice Alberta HINES , widow of the late J.S. HINES , passed peacefully away on Christmas Day . Although she had been in failing health for a number of years , she bore it all with Christain patience and courage , a woman of sterling character, she was loved and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. She united early in life with the Church of Christ and was a faith ful and unswerving in her loyality and devotion to the cause of Christianity. Her home was always open to those who were proclaiming the gospel. She leaves to mourn their loss her son Joseph, and daughter Miss Georgie at home who tenderly and devotely cared for her during her illness; also three other daughters via Mrs A.I. MILLAR of Edmonton Alta.; Mrs E.E. SHORTLIFFE of South Range and Mrs R.M. JOHNSTON of Milton , Queens Co. besides a number of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. Donald STOCKFORD of the Southville and South Range Churches of Christ. His sermon was from 11 Timothy IV :7.8''Two of her favorite hymns were sung. 'Nearer my God to Thee' and Shall We gather at the river'. Mr STOCKFORD also sang very effectively 'Sunrise of To-morrow. Interment was in the family plot , Rossway.

JAMES W.MARSHALL The death of James W. MARSHALL occured at the home of his son , H. A. MARSHALL at Woodside , Dartmouth on Thursday , May 4 at the age of 77 years. Mr. MARSHALL was born in Newburyport Mass but had lived in Nova Scotia for the past twenty years and was well known in throughout Digby and Weymouth. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W.H. ELGEE of the Dartmouth Baptist Church. The remains were taken to Yarmouth ,where interment was made. He is survived by one son , H. A. MARSHALL of Dartmouth ;and two daughters, Mrs Hugh VINCENT of Digby;and Mrs Leslie P. MERRILL of Georgetown, Mass. ,his wife having predeceased him , several years ago.

He was in New York at the time of his death where two of his children reside .The deceased was the former resident of Freeport ,the youngest son of the late Henry and Mrs PRIME. He is survived by his wife and seven children and four sisters, Mrs Harris YOUNG, Mrs Charles MORRELL, Freeport ;Mrs Mary HAINES and Mrs R. CAMPBELL in the United States. and one brother Frank of Freeport.Interment was at Wellesley Mass. where Mr. PRIME made his home.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 8 O'clock with Father O. HERBERT , P.P. officating at requiem High Mass. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery at Church Point.

JOHN ROBICHEAU The death of John ROBICHEAU , son of the late Mr. and Mrs Martin ROBICHEAU , Weymouth Point , occured at his home on Wednesday.of last week. Deceased had suffered a paralytic shock some time ago , and although partly recovering had been in failing health .The funeral service took place at St. Croix Church , Gilbert's Cove on Friday. He is survived by his widow , a number of children , residing both here and in the United States and by two brothers at Weymouth Point.

Digby Courier Friday May 12 MRS FIDELE P COMEAU There passed away on Monday morning May 1, Mrs Adeline COMEAU , wife of Fidele P.COMEAU of Lower Saulnierville . Her death was a great shock to her numerous friends as many did not know she had been ill,as she had only been ill eight days and failed very rapidly during the last few days. She was known for her many chariable deeds and was always ready to give a helping hand to the needy. The mother of twelve children she still adopted an orphan who she cared for and brought up and who is still at home. She also cared for two aged neighbors ,taking them into her home -the late Frank MELANSON who died a few years ago and his sister Elizabeth MELANSON who is an invalid in bed. Only six of her children are now living besides her husband. They are Margaret[Mrs DR. MEDLYN] and Celeste of Jamaica Plains MA; Charles of Port Williams; Francis, George , Neri of Lower Saulnierville ;also Anna COMEAU , her adopted child ; four grand children one sister Mary [Mrs J.L. ROBICHEAU ] of Meteghan Centre and one brother John BLINN of Lower Saulniercville . She was a devoted member of the Catholic Ladies Leaque and was much interested in all its undertakings. The Funeal services werw held on Wednesday in the Sacred Heart Church where a solemn High Mass was celebrated by thr Rev. Father Rocicheau of St. Anne's College assited by Rev. Father Comeau. The Pall bearers were Charles Comeau, Wilfred LeBlanc, Felix Comeau, Bernard Comeau and Emile Gaudet.

COMEAU, assisted by Fr. GAUDET and Fr. ROBICHAUD. (1940's) Pall bearers were Mac, Felix, and Walter SAULNIER, Alphie and Benjamin LEBLANC, and Edward WARNER. Mrs. LEBLANC is survived by her husband; one daugher, Mrs. Joseph MUISE; one adopted daughter, Mrs. Avite POTHIER, Belleville; two sisters, Mrs. William ROBBINS, Belleville; and Mrs. Levi AMIRAULT, Amirault's Hill; also two grandchildren, Mrs. Edward ROBICHAUD, Bath, Maine; and Katherine BURKE, Hubbard Point. An only son died in a drowning accident 17 years ago.

SAULNIERVILLE STATION�Edmund DUFFEY, known to his many friends as Pat, aged 57, passed away Sunday morning after a brief illness. At the time of his death he was Municipal Councillor, and employed at the Meteghan shipyards. A veteran of World War 1, he served with distinction in the U.S. Navy. He was for many years proprietor of a general store at Saulnierville Station. Born at Saulnierville, son of the late Capt. John DUFFEY, old time sailing master. Surviving are his wife Adele, and son Victor, two brothers Fred and William, in the U.S. A., and one sister, Mrs. Georgine GAUDET, Saulnierville Station. Requiem Mass was held at Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville, Tuesday, June 6th, officiated over by Father (Captain) Thomas CASTONGUAY, with interment in the parish cemetery.

The death of Mrs. Mary Adeline MELANSON occurred Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John WOODRUFF, William Street, following an illness of some months. She was born in Meteghan 82 yrs ago and had lived in Yarmouth for many years. She was the widow of Joseph MELANSON who was well known in Yarmouth. Funeral services were from St. Ambrose Church this morning and were attended by a large number of friends. The late Mrs. MELANSON was a lady of many fine qualities and counted many friends in the community. Although somewhat advanced in years she was very active and retained her faculties up to the time of her passing. She is survived by five daughters and four sons and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. John WOODRUFF, Mrs. Maude ROBICHEAU, Mrs. J. B. HANRAHAN, Mrs. Thomas SAULNIER and Mrs. Leo MUISE live in Yarmouth, John A, in Halifax, G. Arthur in Kentville, William in Hebron and Everett at home are the sons. Joseph SAULNIER of Yarmouth is a brother. There are also two other sisters, one in United States and another in Hamilton, Ont. and two others in the U.S. Six grandsons were bearers at the funeral.
