SAULNIER, Melissa Carrie - 23, Meteghan Station, passed peacefully away in the IWK Health Centre on May 9, 2008. Melissa was born in Yarmouth on August 15, 1984, and was proud and pleased to have her birthday on the same date as the "Fete national de l'Acadie". She is survived by her loving mother, Barbara SAULNIER; stepdad, Darren DEVEAU; brother, Jules SAULNIER. She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Benoit and Carrie COMEAU (Saint Alphonse). She also leaves to mourn her loss, her father, Claude SAULNIER (Alice); paternal grandparents, Medric and Rose Marie SAULNIER, all of Saulnierville. She was an inspiration and the love of many including her godparents, numerous aunts and uncles, cousins and countless friends. Melissa was a courageous young lady who brought sunshine into the lives of all who knew her. The family appreciates the loving and gentle care Melissa received from the doctors, nurses and support staff at the IWK Health Centre. Born in Weymouth North, Digby Co., he was a son of the late Willis and Zelia (COOK) COSMAN. He served overseas in the Royal Canadian Artillery, serving in England, Italy, Belgium and Holland. Following the war, he was self-employed in the garage and service station business. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Phyllis MacLEOD- COSMAN; sons, Bradford (Lorna), Randall and Michael; grandchildren, Tracey (Jim), Amy (Darren), Andrea (Graham); great- grandchildren, Anderson, Aidan, Emily; brothers, Robert (Marie), Fredric (Doris). Elva was an avid supporter of St. John's United Church, Middleton, where she was active in various church activities. She loved to knit and would enjoy donating mittens to charitable causes. Elva adored nature, walking, lawn bowling in Kingston, and enjoyed good company. The family of Roland Gaudet announces with great sadness the passing of their beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather who passed away suddenly on May 23, 2008, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Roland was predeceased by the love of his life, Noella in 2004, and is survived by his children, Gerald (Judy) GAUDET, and Geraldine ANDERSON, Dartmouth; grandsons, Darrell GAUDET, Dartmouth, and Derrick (Lisa) GAUDET, Toronto; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Chiasson GAUDET and Christina and Jennifer GAUDET; numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly also survive him. He served as a Merchant Mariner during the Second World War and at the Halifax Shipyard before moving on to Dalhousie University where he became Chief Engineer of Heat and Maintenance until his retirement. Roland was a very gentle man with a kind soul, who loved spending time with his great-grandchildren, watching sports on TV with his beloved Noella, and caring for all animals especially the birds he fed every day. GIDNEY, Loran Maxwell - 55 Mink Cove, Digby Co. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their dearest husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. Loran passed away peacefully in Digby General Hospital on May 23, 2008. He was a son of Wilfred Jr. and LaReta GIDNEY. Loran worked with his father at Gidney Fisheries for 22 years, spending the last five years self-employed in his shop at home. He was a past member of Digby Pines Golf Club and loved the game of golf. He was an honest, kind, man who never refused to help anyone who needed a hand. He loved his family and friends and was so proud to finally become a "grampie" to Benjamin and Isis. He loved to work with his hands and spent most of his days and nights in his shop repairing and painting new and antique vehicles. No job was ever too big or too small and was always done to perfection. He will be remembered for his kind and generous heart and his natural sense of humor. McCALLUM, Arnold James - 77, Digby, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Charlottetown, Arnold was an avid hockey and baseball player and coach throughout his youth and adulthood. Arnold played semi-professional baseball in Ontario and Nova Scotia and semi- professional hockey in Nova Scotia from 1949 - 1956. He moved to Digby in the mid 1950s where he met his wife, Eileen WOODMAN. Arnold returned to high school in 1956 - 57 to complete grade 12 and then went on to teachers college in Truro. A gifted and well-respected educator, Arnold taught school in Digby from 1958 until 1964 when he and his family embarked on a journey to Canada's north to teach school in Yellowknife, NT., and then Fort Smith, NT. During the summers, Arnold attended Acadia University in Wolfville earning a Bachelors of Arts and Education degrees. After spending several years as a school principal in Fort Smith, Arnold entered the arena of territorial politics in 1974, winning a seat in the constituency of Slave River and becoming an MLA in the first fully elected Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Soon after the election, Arnold was named the first ever Minister of Education of the Northwest Territories. After spending four years commuting to Yellowknife in order to fulfill his cabinet duties, Arnold was re-elected in 1979 and named to cabinet again so he and his wife Eileen moved their family to Yellowknife in order to be together. Arnold was elected a third term in 1983 and retired from politics in 1987. Although they loved the North, Arnold and Eileen also loved the maritimes and returned to Digby in 1987, 23 years after embarking on their great northern adventure. Arnold once again immersed himself into the community. He was involved in hockey, curling and golf, and once again became involved in municipal politics. Arnold was passionate about many things, too many to detail, but one of the most important things to him was being a contributing member of his community, wherever that was at the time. A great volunteer, Arnold was involved at various times in his life with the Royal Canadian Legion, Lion's Club, Knights of Columbus and municipal politics. He believed the best way to improve any situation was to get involved with it. Anyone who knew him knew he was passionate about sports. In his youth he earned his living playing hockey and baseball. Arnold spent most of his adult life either playing, coaching or officiating hockey, baseball, golf and curling. He started Digby minor hockey program in the 1960s because he felt so strongly about kids being involved in sports. He was also heavily involved in minor hockey in NWT for the same reason. After retiring to Digby, Arnold was instrumental in creating the Digby Sports Hall of Fame and was recently inducted to the Hall in Honour of a lifetime of sports achievements. Arnold is survived by his loving wife, Eileen; sons, Ross, Inuvik, NT; Scott, Digby; daughter, Nancy Robert (Ivan), St. Albert, Alba.; grandsons, Daniel and Luke Robert, St. Albert, Alba.; siblings, Joan HENRY (Ron), Guelph, Ont.; Janet LaPIERRE (Jerry), Georgetown, Ont.; Carol ROSE (Bill), Pierrefonds, Que.; Brian (Marg), Calgary, Alba.; Margo ELLIS (Ed), Calgary, Alba.; Alan (Glenna), Nanaimo, B.C. ROSS (KRAUSNICK), Mary Elizabeth - 83, passed away at home on Thursday, May 22, 2008. Born in Brighton, Mary was the daughter of Walter and Maud (MacDONOUGH) KRAUSNICK. Mary's parents were summer residents of Nova Scotia who sometimes stayed year round. Thus her early education was divided between Brighton and the United States. The Second World War interrupted summer travel to Nova Scotia. Mary used this period to achieve a degree in soil agronomy from the University of Arizona. In the immediate post War years, Mary resumed her summers in Brighton, with her winters spent earning a degree from Arizona State Teachers College. Marriage interrupted her teaching career. Her husband's employment in Hawaii moved her to those Islands. She continued to come to Nova Scotia as much as she could, with two of her children born in Nova Scotia and two born in the United States. Her later life was spent almost entirely in Nova Scotia, visiting her children and grandchildren in Hawaii each winter. Mary choose to live in a very simple way, keeping a garden and at times a few hens. She loved St. Mary's Bay, its shoreline, and its sunsets. She is survived by daughter, Stephanie ROSS (Hugh); sons, Patrick ROSS (Stephanie), Jonathan ROSS (Jill), Sean ROSS (Kyle), and five grandchildren, all of Hawaii, and her partner of many years, Lawrence AMBROSE of Brighton. Mary was predeceased by her parents, her only sibling, Patrick KRAUSNICK, and her former husband, Ernest ROSS. The remains have been donated to the Dalhousie School of Medicine. THERIAULT, Bernard A. "Bernie" - 88, passed away peacefully in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on May 25, 2008. Born in Meteghan Station, he was the son of the late Auguste and Evenie (DEVEAU) THERIAULT. He married Emma SAULNIER on March 8, 1943, and they moved to Halifax to raise their four children, Betty, Garry, Darrell and Earl. He was predeceased by Emma in August, 2003. He served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War. He was a maintenance supervisor in the Halifax HMC Dockyard, retiring in 1983 after 27 years to move back to his beloved home and birthplace in Meteghan Station. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and many visits from family and friends. He loved nature and emjoyed taking care of his property. He was a skilled carpenter and loved to work with wood. He was most happy when surrounded by his family. He was a member of the Meteghan Lions Club and the Royal Canadian Legion, Clare Branch No. 52, Saulnierville. He is survived by his wife, Flora LeBLANC, Saulnierville; sons, Paul (Eva) LeBLANC, Thomas (Frances) LeBLANC, both of Saulnierville; Hubert (Judy) LeBLANC, Coldbrook; daughters, Eileen (Donald) GOUBEAULT, Cheverie; Marguerite (Gordie) DEVEAU, Saulnierville; brother, Delb� (Jeanne) Le BLANC, Saulnierville; sisters, Marie Rose THIMOT, Adele OUELLETTE, both of Saulnierville; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson. Visitation today from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Meteghan Funeral Home. Funeral service Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville, Rev. Paul Belliveau officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Canada, Maritime Region or Victorian Order of Nurses.
