LEVY, Evelyn O. FINIGAN Crocker - 92, Halifax, died in Berkeley Retirement Residence, Halifax on Tuesday, October 1, 2002. Born in Freeport, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late Leslie and Elenora (CANN) FINIGAN. She taught school in Freeport for 28 years and in Fairview, Halifax Co., for 12 years, retiring in 1975. She was the organist at Freeport United Baptist Church from 1930-1962, and enjoyed a life-long interest in music. She was a member of Freeport United Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Halifax. She joined the Fair Isle Rebekah Lodge No. 92 in Freeport in 1928 and was a member of Mizpah Lodge No. 5 in Halifax. She was a life member of Kwebec Chapter No. 27 O.E.S. in Bedford and a member of Armcrest Chapter No. 45 O.E.S. and Halifax Chapter No. 7 O.E.S. She is survived by son, Delbert M. CROCKER, Indianapolis, Ind.; niece, Gwen STILWELL, Saint John, N.B.; numerous other relatives. She was the widow of Egbert R. CROCKER (Freeport) and Wallace D. LEVY (Halifax). She was also predeceased by her sister, Elenora SMALL and brother, Welton FINIGAN. COTTREAU, Henri Louis - 92, passed away October 12, 2002, in Villa St. Joseph du Lac. Born in Wedgeport, July 14, 1910, he was a son of the late George COTTREAU and Emilie LEBLANC. He was a general merchant and proprietor of Henri L. COTTREAU General Store, Wedgeport. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus of the Msgr. W.E. Young Assembly. He was a prominent and well-respected citizen of Wedgeport. He was secretary of the Wedgeport Life Insurance Club and Wedgeport Agricultural Society, served two terms on the Wedgeport Council, was Chairman of the Board of School Trustees, president of the seniors club "Le Club des Acadiens Seniors", served on the parish council, and was secretary of the Wedgeport Retired Fishermen Club. ROPER, Howard W. - 96, 525 Onslow Rd., passed away October 18, 2002, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Charlottetown, P.E.I., he was a son of the late James F. and Mary Etta (CLARK) ROPER. Howard moved to Princeport with his father in 1926 to manage the Beech Hill Farm and Dairy. Howard and his father purchased the farm in 1932 and operated the farm with purebred Guernsey's until 1952. Following the sale of the farm, he was employed by the Nova Scotia Animal Breeders Co- operative as manager of sales and promotions. During that time, Howard established both beef and dairy sales throughout Nova Scotia. He became an auctioneer in 1964 and continued his involvement with the Roper Family Auctions until his passing. Howard was also involved in many dairy cattle sales through the years. He was an avid painter for some 35 years and a number of his painting were donated to charitable organizations and breed associations as money raising projects. Howard was well-known throughout Canada, especially Atlantic Canada for his work in the dairy industry and his love of dairy cattle particularly Holsteins and Guernseys. He worked unselfishly with the mentally challenged and disabled organizations within the Truro area. Howard was a member of numerous organizations both locally and nationally. He was inducted into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1980, an institution in which he was instrumental in founding. The Canadian Association of Animal Breeders honored Howard in 1992 with the Award of Merit for outstanding contribution to the Dairy Cattle Industry. He will also made a life time member of the Canadian Guernsey Breeders Association. Those who know Howard best will remember him for his honesty, integrity, love of people and his great eye for cattle. Howard is survived by his special granddaughter and companion, Lori BROWN, at home; daughters, Bette (Don) CHISHOLM, Old Barns; Carol GILLIS, Onslow; Kathryn (Edsel) HAMILTON, Lower Onslow; sister, Nadine ARCHIBALD, Bedford; brother-in-law, Wally STEAD, Onslow; grandchildren, Cherie BROWN, Carrie MACQUARRIE, Jenny GILLIS, Debbie RUTHERFORD, Melanie MACBEAN, Don B. DOUCETTE, Adolphe J. - 98, resident of Villa St. Joseph Du Lac, Dayton, passed away October 20, 2002, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Quinan, Yarmouth Co. March 10, 1904, he was a son of the late Hilaire and Fran�oise (DOUCETTE) DOUCETTE. He lived in Quinan most of his life except for a few years in the 1920s when he worked in Massachusetts. He earned his living as a carpenter and mason and his beautiful masonry work can be found on many foundations, chimneys, stonewalls and tombstones in the village and throughout the province. He proudly carved his parents' tombstone from a slate rock he found near his home. For 22 years from 1937 to 1959, he tended the Quinan fire tower. During the war he pursued his trade, in off season, in Debert, Greenwood, Eastern Passage, and South Maitland. Adolphe was always ready to volunteer time to his church and community where he was regarded to be a just and honest man. In 1975, he, his wife and infirmed son moved to the Villa St. Joseph Du Lac, where he remained active becoming well-known for his wood carvings and basketry. Even though he still had a valid driver's license at the age of 94, he decided to sell his car four years ago. Adolphe enthusiastically read the Chronicle-Herald daily, and loved to discuss any topic therein, he remained undecided on "cloning". And so you could always count on having an interesting conversation with him whether it be concerning today's world issues or listening to fantastic stories of days of yore. He also had a good listening ear and was always willing to offer words of wisdom to anyone who came to him for advice. He will be dearly missed for his remarkable memory of events and people of the county. The chroniclers of the past have lost an outstanding resource. She married her husband after he captured her heart by singing "The Rose of Tralee" on the night they met. They Lived in Halifax, Cornwallis, Smith's Cove, Digby, Yarmouth and moved to Mill Village in 1968. She enjoyed tending her gardens until she had a stroke in 1987. She had two passions, her many Hummels and the Toronto Blue Jays. She also enjoyed all the many friends who dropped in to visit. Jack was a kind and gentle man who loved nature, especially bird watching, gardening both vegetable and flower. He was a great conversationalist who liked to play a good game of cards and always welcomed visitors to his home. He cherished the community of Sandy Cove and fulfilled his dream of lifelong residency. He is survived by daughters, Linda MOREHOUSE, Lower Sackville; Sharon (Joe) BICKNELL, Digby; Heather (Larry) HARTLIN, Avonport; grandchildren, Kevin, Cheryl, Steve, Heather, Laura, Jackie; great- grandson, Adam; sister, Nora SAUNDERS-STEVENS, Halifax. Marg was the beloved wife of Raymond C. Born in Centreville, Digby Co., he was a son of the late Horace NEWTON and Hilda (GRAHAM) COGSWELL. Horace had lived in the United States for several years where he had owned and operated H. Cogswell & Son Inc., a home improvement company specializing in eavestroughing, roofing, windows and doors. While in the US, he was actively involved in square dancing. In 1971 he moved back to Nova Scotia and in the late 1970's founded Scotia Ladders Ltd., Lake Paul, retiring in 1983. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping. She lived in Saint John, N.B., for 43 years. She graduated in 1962 from the first Registered Nursing Assistant Course offered at the Saint John Vocational School. She did private duty nursing as well as worked at various places including St. Joseph's Hospital, D.V.A. and St. John St. Stephen Nursing Home until her retirement in 1982, when she returned to Grosses Coques. She belonged to various organizations including St. Pius X Church, Saint John, N.B.; C.W.L, Quilter's Group, Thistle Curling Club, Feeding Children Noon Lunch Programme (North End) and Liberal Association. She was an associate member of the R.K.Y.C., member of the Seniors' Clubs in St. Bernard and Belliveau Cove, Seniors' Games and a member of the Legion's Women's Auxiliary. Some of her hobbies included playing cribbage, quilting, knitting and tatting. BACON, Leslie Bickford - 85, Barton, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 14, 2002, in Annapolis Royal Nursing Home. Born May 16, 1917, in Barton, he was the son of the late Melbourne and Florence (COOK) BACON. He served in the Second World War in France, Germany and Holland. He received a citation from Field Marshall MONTGOMERY for exemplary conduct during the campaign in France. After the war he drove trucks and worked in a lumber mill and later employed as a mechanic at CFB Cornwallis for 28 years. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 20, Digby; a member of North Range Baptist Church, and a life member of the Digby East Fish and Game. He enjoyed fishing and camping; he was well-known in the community for making craft items. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Thelma (WHITE) BACON; son, Barry, Belleville, Ont.; daughter, Brenda (Lennie) HANNAM, Parker Mountain Road.; only granddaughter, Heather. One of his greatest joys was being with his grandchildren and family. He loved his tractor and being in the woods. He also loved music and playing his guitar.
