He was past president of the United Church Camp, Berwick. Upon his retirement he lived in Westville and had assisted at St. Paul United Church, where he was an honorary member of the session. He is survived by his wife, the former Isabel GRANT; three daughters, Jane (Mrs. Ron PRITCHARD), Delaware, Pa.; Anne (Mrs. Ron MUIR), Amhestburg, Ont.; Elsie, Moncton; a son, Douglas, Halifax; a brother, Rev. HANKINSON, Thomas Edward - Middleton, died March 12, 1993, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Weymouth he was the son of the late George and Maude (GATES) HANKINSON. As a lad, he sailed on his father's vessels to various ports on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. In 1918, he received a national service certificate for his speacial patriotic work in the production of war supplies. After leaving school, he worked for the Royal Bank. In 1925, he came to Middleton to manage his father's mill, the Valley Milling Company. In 1926, he oversaw the building and managed the family owned G.O. HANKINSON and Sons General Store until it was sold in 1953. He was employed by the Department of Highways for 16 years, retiring in 1971. He owned and operated M.D. HANKINSON Lumber Company and the dairy farm, Falcourt Acres, Middleton. As a teenager, he became interested in standard bred horses and for 40 years, raced his horses at tracks in the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario, and Maine. He bred and raised budlong and heromine horses; sang in various quartets and church choirs; was a member and former deacon of the Middleton United Baptist Church; 33rd degree mason and member of the Middleton Ionic Lodge 73; past master and past deputy district grand master of the Masonic Lodge; member of Western Valley Shrine Club; past patron of Annavale Chapter 31, Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of Rupert MacNeil conclave. He served on Middleton Town Council for two terms and was recently honored by the town on the 65th anniversary of his being sworn in. He was a lifelong member of the Progressive Conservative Party. He is survived by his wife, the former Marguerite DRAKE; two daughters, Helen (Mrs. Darrell PEARMAN), Halifax; Dianne (Mrs. Leonard LeGARD), Middleton; son Thomas, Middleton; two brothers Curtis, Kenneth, both of Weymouth; four sisters, Esther (Mrs. Harvey HICKSON), Boston; Margaret (Mrs. Merritt JOHNSON), Weymouth; Grace (Mrs. Harry SPARKS), Springfield, Mo.; eight grandchildren; five great- grandchildren. He was predeceaed by his first wife, the former Gladys GATES; two brothers, Scott, and George. The body is in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton, visiting 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, where an Ionic service will be 7 p.m. tonight and where an Order of the Eastern Star service will be 7:30 p.m. tonight. In 1937, he graduated from Pine Hill Divinity Hall, Halifax. Following his ordination, he served in the following pastorates: Stairs Memorial United, Dartmouth (1937-42); St. Andrew's United , Springhill (1942-47); St. Andrew's United, Wolfville (1947-54); Knox United, Glace Bay (1954-60); Bethany United, Halifax (1960-67); Trinity United, New Glasgow (1967-73); Beacon United, Yarmouth (1973-79) and First United, Truro (1980-86), where he served as minister of visitation. Besides church work, he was actively involved in community activities and served on many boards. He is survived by his wife, the former Norma LYDIARD; three sons, Leland, Lower Sackville; Rev. Glenn, Dartmouth; Brian, River John; eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Rev. Frank, Rev. Ward, Jack; a grandson. Cremation has taken place under the direction of A.L. He retired in 1989 after a 40-year career in the transportation business. A longtime member of the Halifax Traffic Club, he was a member and past warden of St. Augustine's Anglican Church, Lake Echo.
