DEACON WILLIAM STEVENS Deacon William STEVENS who has been in ill health for many months ,passed away in Halifax, Tuesday October 12. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs Joseph STEVENS and was born in Freeport 71 years ago. He had lived his entire life in Freeport ,where he had given freely of his time to his church and Sunday School. He had a fine tenor voice ,singing in the choir for many years , and was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years,also a Deacon of the church. His first wife was Goldie EVERETT . By this marriage there were three children , Mrs Thedore GRIFFIN of North Head in Grand Manan; Winnie married and living in the USA and Everett ,who is now living in Weymouth. His surviving wife was Vivian RICE of Digby . Also three sisters survive, Mrs Charles HICKS of Westport; Mrs Dora MILBURY and Mrs Bernard BLACKFORD of Freeport. Funeral services were conducted from the United Baptist Church with Rev. Wm. GLENN of Westport officiating . Chippewa Lodge sat in a body in the centre of the church, and also attended at the graveside. Our sympathy is extended to the family.

Digby Courier Thursday MICHAEL ERNEST MAC KINNON Funeral services for the late Michael Ernest MACKINNON who passed away at his home here early Monday morning after a lengthy illness were conducted from St. Patrick's Church yesterday morning. Requiem High Mass was sung by Rev. Father MCCARTHY and Rev. Father POWER. The children's choir was lead by Father Leopold d'Entremont. Pall bearers were C.J.Beaton, W.J. McMahon, John Gaudet , Jerry Surette , Wilfred Deveau and Leslie Dugas. Mr. MACKINNON was 85 years of age at the time of his death and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Smith MACKINNON of Mill village , Queens Co. He is survived by his wife and two daughters Addie [Mrs. T.L.DEVEAU] Digby and Sadie [ Mrs CULBERT ] , St. George NB and one son Joseph also survives .

The death of Mrs Lucy TREVOY occured at her home in Brighton on Sunday , October 23th. aged 83 years of age.Her husband predeceased her a few years ago. Surviving are four children, Arch TREVOY in Saskatoon;Hubert TREVOY in Calgary; Nellie [Mrs C. COLLWELL in Gaspereau] ; and Evelyn [Mrs Wm. MULLEN] , Brighton ; also six grandchildren and one brother Adolph SPECHT of Barton and Mrs Helena JOHNS of Brighton. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Ralph KNOCK conducting the service . Interment was in the family lot at Barton Cemetery

MRS ALICE MARGESON The death of Mrs Alice MARGESON of Clementsport took place at the Digby General Hospital at an early hour Sunday April 3rd. Mrs MARGESON has been staying at Maple Tree Inn, Deep Brook for several years and was in the hospital one day. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Chalmers WOODBURY of Annapolis and was 95 years of age. She was married to the late Capt. Samuel POTTER of Clementsport and lived there where Mr. POTTER was a successful merchant. Several years after his death she married Norris MARGESON and went to Kentville to live. Since Mr. MARGESON'S death she has lived at Bear River and Deep Brook . Mrs SIMONDS, her sister has been her companion for a number of years and cared for her during her illness. She is also survived by a nephew Alfred WOODBURY of Annapolis . Funeral service was held at the United Church , Clementsport , Tuesday afternoon , conducted by Rev. C. GESNER . Interment was at the United Church Cemetery.

MR. FREDERICK COSSABOOM Funeral of the late Mr. Frederick COSSABOOM ,whose death took place on Thursday April 7 was held at the Christian Church on Saturday , Rev. J. W. DERBY officiating. At the death of his wife in September of 1947 , Mr COSSABOOM who was ill at that time was taken to the home of his daughter , Mrs R. HAINES , Freeport who has tenderly cared for him until the end. He was a faithful memember of the Christian Church , Tiverton . Interment was in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Surviving are two daughters , Mrs R. HAINES [Wilda ].Freeport and Mrs Lawson SPENCER [Winnifred] USA and two sons Mendel of Freeport Maine and Weldon Beaver Harbour NB.

MRS ESTHER STEVENS The death of Mrs Esther STEVENS ,widow of the late Lester STEVENS occured at the home of her daughter Capt. and Mrs Albert MOORE Saturday , April 2 .Although she had been in poor health for several years she was able to get about and was only confined to her bed two weeks. In the six years of her stay in Westport she made a host of friends both old and young and will be greatly missed. She was born in Freeport September 7 ,1866 ,daughter of the late Morgan and Elizabeth THURBER and was 83 years of age. She leaves to mourn eight children who were all able to be at her bedside when she passed away. Three sons Percy of St. John; Charlie of Cambridge Mass. ; Dalton of Port Maitland; Goldie[Mrs James W. DOANE ]Newton Upper Falls; Grace [Mrs Charles SWAN ]of Saugus Mass; Inez [Mrs Albert MOORE ] Westport , Gertrude [Mrs Everett SPEAKER] and Cornelta [Mrs William MASWELL] Saugus Mass. also ten grand children and five great grand children. The remains were forwarded to Freeport Monday and the service was conducted at the Freeport Baptist Church of which she was a member by Rev. J. W. DERBY of Westport . Two favorite hymns 'In the Garden ' and 'Good Night and Good Morning were rendered by the mixed quartette , Mrs Bernard BLACKFORD, Mrs Norman PERRY , Alton MCNEIL and Scott PERRY. The pallbearers were her grandson Stanley MOORE ,also Theodore TEED, Harold CROCKER and Holland TITUS. The floral tributes were many and beautiful . Interment was in the Valley Cemetery at Freeport

1949 Weldon Lewis

WELDON LEWIS LIVERPOOL, N.S. Nov. 1 -- Word has been received here of the death of Weldon LEWIS of Saint John, a native of Freeport, N.S., which occurred at the Lancaster Department of Veterans'Affairs Hospital at Saint John. Mr. LEWIS, well known along Nova Scotia's South Shore, had been a patient for several weeks. Mr. LEWIS was born 58 years ago at Freeport, a son of the late Pitman and Annie LEWIS. He enlisted with the 219th Nova Scotia Highland Brigade in the First World War. Later he was transferred to the 42nd Black Watch Regiment and served in the Europeantheatre. He was wounded at Vimy. Mr. LEWIS was invalided to England and while in hospital suffered an attack of pneumonia and was returned to Canada in 1919. In 1926, Mr. LEWIS was united in marriage to Miss Hilda L. MILLER, daughter of the late Mr.and Mrs. W.J. MILLER of Fairville, N.B. and Saint John. Employed with several Saint John ? as a welder, Mr. LEWIS had many friends in the Maritime Provences. He spend his summers at Crystal Beach on the Saint John River where he was held in high esteem and where he was ever willing to assist boat owners and river cruises in overcoming difficulties with their craft. Mr. LEWIS was a member of the Saint John Power Boat Club. He was a Baptist in faith and was an active member of Central Baptist Church at Saint John when his health permitted. Mr. LEWIS is survived by his widow; two brothers, W. Reid LEWIS of East Saint John, and Dalton LEWIS of New Westminster, British Columbia, who recently visited his brother at Saint John; and by several nieces and nephews. Interment was made at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eleutrope COMEAU of Meteghan. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alma COMEAU; one adopted son, Benoit, two brothers, Nicholas of St. Alphonse, and Telesphore of Meteghan. Solemn Requiem High Mass was held at St. Alphonse Church on Tuesday morning,with Rev. Father M. LEBLANC, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rt. Rev. Msgr.Bourneuf of Meteghan, as deacon, and Rev. Father A. LEBLANC of Salmon River, as sub-deacon. Interment was in St. Alphonse cemetery.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dedier COMEAU of St. Alphonse. He leaves to mourn three sons, Denis, Irene, and Fred of St. Alphonse; two daughters, Mrs. Louis (Marie) BOUDREAU of St. Alphonse, and Mrs. George (Rita) BELLIVEAU of the Annapolis Valley. Solemn Requiem High Mass, took place at St. Alphonse Church on Wednesday morning, with Rev. Father M. LEBLANC, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rt.Rev. Msgr. Bourneuf, of Metaghan, as deacon, and Rev. Father A. LEBLANC of Salmon River, as sub-deacon. Interment was in St. Alphonse cemetery.

He leaves two sons, Joseph and Harvey of West Haven; a daughter, Irene at Beaverly. His wife died several years ago. Mr. ROBICHEAU was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin B. ROBICHEAU and was born at Meteghan 79(?) years ago. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters, Leger at Beaverly, Basil at Meteghan; Rev. Sister Marie Elise at the Convent of Ste. Anne du Ruisseau,N.S., and Alinee at Meteghan.

West Pubnico, Dec. 1-The death of Theodore P. D'ENTREMONT, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Remi D'ENTREMONT occurred at his home Wednesday afternoon after a long illness, at the age of 79. He was a life long resident of this place and was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. Surviving besides his wife, the former Annie BARTEAUX, are six daughters and three sons: Mrs. Wilfred POTHIER (Isabel), Belleville, N. S.; Mrs. Gus COMEAU (Rena), Lynn, Mass.; Mrs. Harry HANSON (Ela) Chicago; Mrs. John REDECHA, (Phyllis), Long Island, N. Y.; Mrs. Delmar D'ENTREMONT, (Alvina), West Pubnico, and Francetta, in Long Island, N. Y.; Craig, of Stoneham, Mass.; Andrew and Joan, in Halifax; Eloi and Charles of Lower West Pubnico, and eighteen grandchildren. Funeral services will take place on Friday morning at 9 o'clock, from St. Peter's Church, with Requiem High Mass, Rev. Father Thomas LEBLANC will officiate.

THIBAULT, Edwin Joseph Digby, Dec. 5 - Funeral service for Edwin Joseph THIBAULT, who passed awayat the Digby General Hospital on December 1st after a long illness were held from St. Patrick's Church here on Saturday morning conducted by Rev. Father MCCARTHY, O.M.I. The late Mr. THIBAULT, who was, 57 years of age at the time of his death,was a son of George D. THIBAULT of Rochester, N.H., and the late Mrs. THIBAULT. He is survived by his wife and one son, Edwin, jr.of Washington,D.C. Two brothers, Frederick J., Digby and Raymond of Boston, survive, as do three sisters, Mary (Mrs. Grover RINES, Concord, N.H.),Florence (Mrs.Wilfred MELANSON, Weymouth Mills) and Gertrude THIBAULT of Keen, N.H. A carpenter by trade, Mr. THIBAULT was employed for a number of years in the United States and also spent some time in England. For many years he was employed by the firm H.T. Warne Ltd. of Digby and was in their employ when stricken ill.

GALLAGHER, Mrs. Milford St. Bernard, Dec. 5 - The death of Mrs. Milford GALLAGHER (nee Lorette GAUDET) youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward GAUDET of this place,occurred at the Roseway Sanatorium on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Deceased had been in ill health for a year. She was 22 years of age. Burial took place Friday morning from St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Father Elie LEBLANC, P.P., officiating at burial service and High Mass. She leaves to mourn her death her husband, a young son, her father and mother, two sisters, Evangeline and Elizabeth, both at home. Her paternal grandmother, age 89, and her maternal grandfather, aged 83 also survive.

Surviving are five daughters, Mary (Mrs. Fred EARLY) of Clements Port,Alice (Mrs. Karl FERGUSON) of Princedale, Margaret (Mrs.Manuel PORTER) of Morganville, Geraldine (Mrs. PEPPHERD) of Truro: three sons, Samuel, Murray, and Robert BERRY of Princeville, also two stepdaughters, Mrs. Willard HALL and Mrs.Andrew KINCH of U.S.A, one stepson, Archie BERRY of Princeville, and four brothers, Louis HENSHAW of Greenland, Ralph and Percy HENSHAW, of Bridgetown and George of U.S.A., one sister, Mrs. Curtis BROCK of Centrelea. Also surviving are 30 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, one daughter Pearl, predeceased her. The funeral was held Saturday from the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. G.D. BRYDEN, assisted by Rev. C.S. YOUNG, of Clementsport. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Windsor - December 8 - Baby Linda Jean SEARIE, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold SEARIE passed away at the Payzant Memorial Hospital today, Constable SEARIE was stationed with the Windsor detachment R.C.M.P. before going to Chester where he is now stationed. Mrs. SEARIE was the former Edna M. FLEMMING of Bear River. There will be a short service at Lindsay's Funeral Home at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Conducted by Rev. Manter WILSON, Committal service and interment will be held in the family plot at Maplewood, Cemetery.

Barrington Passage, December 8 - Ernest HOPKINS, a highly respected citizen, passed away at his home recently at Sherose Island after being stricken with a heart attack. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph HOPKINS, he was born at Clark's Harbor 61 years ago. He and his family moved to Barrington Passage from Clark's Harbor 22 years ago He is survived by his wife the former Viola COLLISHAW: two sons, Langille of Halifax, and Edison of Roxbury, Mass, who came by plane to attend the funeral: two sisters, Elizabeth (Mrs. David SNOW) Port La Tour, Mrs. Austin NICKERSON, of Freeport, Digby County, and two brothers, Levi, Barrington Passage, and Churchill, Cape Sable Island, also two grandchildren; Sherrill and Martha. Funeral Services will be held from Kennedy's Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. ROBERTSON, pastor.

She was the daughter of the late Rosalie and Sylvine Amirault. She is survivled by one sister, Mrs. Julia AMIRAULT, who is now 96 years of age. Funeral services were held from Immaculate Conception Church, with High Mass of Requiem celebrated by Rev. J. L. COMEAU

Known to many as George DELON the deceased was born at Bloomfield, Digby County, 62 years ago and was the son of the late John and Jane (COMEAU) JOHN. Surviving are his widow, the former Lydia THERIAULT three sons. Edward and Frederick of Weymouth North; Patrick of Forest Gen, Yarmouth County; and two daughters Marguerite (Mrs. Harry HEIGHT. Hillgrove, N.S.) and Dorothy (Mrs. Harry WALKER. Weymouth). Also surviving are four sisters. Mrs.W. M. COSMAN, Brighton. Mrs. A.B. CUMMINGS, Digby. Mrs. William AMERO, Hamdon, Conn. and Mrs. Maynard MELANSON, Plympton Station and one brother. Henry, of Bloomfield. Funeral services were held from St. Croix Church, Plymptom with Rev. Father D'ENTREMONT P.P. officiating. Interment was in the St. Croix cemetery.

Digby Courier Jan.26 1950 ARCH THURBER The death of Arch THURBER , well known owner and operator of Thurber's Restaurant at Weymouth occurred at the Digby General Hospital early Sunday morning following a short illness. The deceased was the son of the late Joseph and Ellen THURBERof Weymouth North and Freeport and was born at Freeport 72 years ago . He was married twice ,his first wife being the late Miss BODGE of Westport . When his parents moved to Weymouth North from Freeport he came with them and afterwards married Gladys COOK of Weymouth Point . For many years he operated a restaurtant at Weymouth and acting for more than thirtu years as the chief cook during the months of July and august of each year at Camp Aldecliffe , Summer School For Boys at Weymouth North. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows , Freeport NS. He is survived by his wife Gladys ; one daughter , Dorothy [Mrs Blair DAKIN ] Tiverton and one grandson. Also by four brothers Darrell, and Clarence of Weymouth North; Sydney of Saint John and William of Freeport . One brother Horace and a sister ILda predeceased him. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his home , Lic. H. Ford pastor of the United Baptist Church officiating .with interment in Riverside Cemetery.

EDWARD D. HILL Edward D. Hill, 80, or 8 Cheney Place, a well known resident of this city, died this morning, following a long illness. He is survived by two daughters, Miss Viola C. HILL, and Mrs. Joseph H. EVANS both of this city; a grandson, Edward J. EVANS of this city; a sister, Mrs. Venna MACALPINE of Somerville, and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Fellowship class at the Calvary Baptist Church, Chevalier Middlesex Lodge, K. of P.; Highland Veritas Lodge, IOOF, and the old Cavalry Co. G of the Massachusetts State Guard. Mr. Hill was a native of Digby County, Nova Scotia, and had been a resident of this city for over 50 years. He was a former milk inspector, and was formerly employed at the Burbeck Milk Co. for many years.
