AMERO (DEVEAU), Catherine Lennie "Kay" - 79, Deep Brook, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2007, in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Weymouth, she was the daughter of John and Mamie (GAUDET) DEVEAU. Throughout her lifetime, Kay not only worked very hard at a variety of jobs, she also volunteered much of her time to various organizations. Kay's family legacy includes her children, Lucy, Centreville; Jerry, Canim Lake, B.C.; Corinna, Calgary, Alta.; the late Donna; Joseph, Bear River East; Joann, Pembroke, Ont.; nine grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Kay leaves behind her companion and best friend, Barry Baxter. Kay loved music and dancing and especially loved the ocean and Nova Scotia. During her final years, Kay was always in good spirits. She was well-liked at Mountain Lea Lodge and we will all miss her. PATTERSON, Byron Larry - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of our husband, father, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and best friend to many, Larry PATTERSON. Born in Digby on June 14, 1959, before moving to Halifax where he spent the remainder of his youth before moving to East Preston. Larry passed away on October 5, 2007, at 11:30 a.m. in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, surrounded by his family and friends. Larry went to meet the Lord and predeceased brothers, Barry (Wanda), Clifton, and grandchild DaShawn; grandmother, Agnus MILLER; grandfather, Alan PATTERSON, in Heaven. He was Vice President of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, Atlantic Regional Visible Minority Advisory Group, Vice President of the Usher Board of the East Preston United Baptist Church, former President of the Nova Scotia Mass Choir; Halifax Community YMCA, East Preston Boys and Girls Club, volleyball referee, basketball coach, Main Street 7s Bowling League, Girl Guide Canada Volunteer, School Board Volunteer, and numerous charities. Larry was simply there for whomever and whatever cause required his assistance. There was not a favor or request that he would turn away. Whether it was constant teasing and joking or for lending his helping hand. He will be greatly missed by all he touched. Larry enjoyed spending his time fishing, traveling, golfing and various other sports, and most of all he loved to be on his motorcycle "feeling the breeze and being free". QUIGLEY, Hadsel Gordon, MDCM - Aged 94, Sandy Cove, Digby Co., passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on October 4, 2007, after a brief illness. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Gordon Nelson and Elsie Mae (HUTT) QUIGLEY. Dr. QUIGLEY descended from the "Foreign Protestants" who settled Lunenburg in 1753, and the New England Planters and United Empire Loyalists who settled in Annapolis-Digby in 1760 and 1783. He was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion, 1917. He grew up in Eastern Passage, and was selected to attend the Imperoyal School, later attending the Halifax Academy. He entered Dalhousie University graduating with a Diploma of Engineering in 1939. He then attended the Nova Scotia Technical College, where he earned degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He was a 1942 graduate of Dalhousie Medical School, and a member of the Sigma Chi and Phi Chi fraternities. Dr. QUIGLEY was a General Practitioner in Halifax for 42 years and did post graduate studies in Neurosurgery at McGill in 1950. He was instrumental in the establishment of the in-patient Polio Clinic at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax during the epidemic of the early 1950s. He practiced Anesthesiology, Obstetrics, and Surgery and served on the staff of the Halifax Infirmary, the Children's Hospital and the Grace Maternity Hospital over the years. He also lectured at Dalhousie Medical School. He continued in General Practice and made house calls throughout Halifax County as a member of Family Practice Associates until his retirement in 1984. Dr. and Mrs. QUIGLEY then moved from Halifax to their summer home, Quigley's Corner, in Sandy Cove, Digby Co. Dr. QUIGLEY had little time for leisure pursuits, but loved his sailboat 'Brigadoon' which he sailed out of Bedford Basin Yacht Club. He was a proficient photographer, developing and printing his own photos, a master gardener, a happy baker of cream puffs, a voracious reader, and was delighted to share with all his extensive knowledge on a host of subjects. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lila Gwendolyn (MOREHOUSE) QUIGLEY; son, Richard (Noelle), Adelaide, Australia; daughters, Carol (Anthony) MEASHAM, Chevy Chase, Md.; Karen (Peter) SMITH, Kentville; Gwendolyn (Gary) WILSON, Halifax. ADAMS (STRONACH), Frances Ruby - 80, Bay View, Digby Co., went to be with the Lord on October 16, 2007, in Digby General Hospital. She was the only child of the late Harry and Mary (ANTHONY) STRONACH. She was born in Bridgetown, where she lived for about seven months before moving with her parents to Massachusetts, where she resided in the towns of Harvard, Groton and Ayer. Frances Ruby was a graduate of Ayer High School Class of 1947 and in the same year began her nurses training. Following the death of her father she returned to the land of her birth were she continued to work in her chosen profession. She worked in Nova Scotia in the Valley Hospital and in a nursing home until her marriage to Capt. Harry V. ADAMS Coxswain of the Bay View Life Saving Station, after which she did some private nursing. For many years she served with passion the mission group of Digby Wesleyan Church as treasurer and secretary. On many occasions she gave of her time and talents doing flower arrangements and other decorations. In addition to being an avid lifetime philatelist, she enjoyed her beautiful flower gardens, and for over 30 years was the village correspondent for the Digby Courier and for nearly three decades was the treasurer of the Interdenominational Bible Study Class. She compiled a two volume history "Bay View Life Saving Station History" and wrote "History of Point Prim Lighthouse". She is survived by half-sister, Edith (Joe) ELLIS MURRELL, Cornwallis Park; stepdaughter, Valerie (Louis) ADAMS, Dexter, Ohio; cousins, Joyce KING, Dartmouth; June (Ernest) MILLER, Bridgetown, and Marie Gabriel, Oakville, Ont. She is survived by son, Reginald WOOF of Ottawa, Ont. (wife Judy, grandchildren Darren, Christopher and Becky and three great- grandchildren); son, Donald of Huntsville, Ont. (wife Helga BRILLON and grandchildren Shawn, Stacey and Brandon), and son, Brian of Fall River (wife Christine, grandchildren Meghan, Jordan and Logan). She is also survived by sister, Catherine "Kate" TRENHOLM of Cape Spear, N.B., and brother, George HUTCHISON of Bayfield, N.B., as well as sister-in-law, Margery WHITE of Digby; sister-in-law, Margaret RICHARDSON of Charlottetown, P.E.I.; sister-in-law, Ruth WOOF of Wolfville, and sister- in-law, Mel HUTCHISON of Bristol, N.B., along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Eric WOOF (of Digby and Darlington, England); father, Duncan HUTCHISON (of Manchester, England), and mother, Ellen (Helen) ROBERTSON (of Kelso, Scotland). She was also predeceased by brothers and sisters, Scotty ROBERTSON, Andrew "Sonny", John "Jack", Duncan, Jean Triano, Magnus "Mac", Sadie "Sally" (BENWELL), Edward "Teddy", Barbara McDONALD, Alistair "Al" and Helen O'QUINN. Isabel, originally from Ardpatrick, Scotland, came to Canada at the age of five and grew up in Cape Spear, N.B. She was the youngest girl in a large family of 14 kids (one by adoption). She was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. One of her greatest loves was "sneaking up" for test flights with the pilots. She met and married Eric during the Second World War and settled in Digby after the war and they raised their family there. She moved to Halifax approximately eight years ago after having lived in Digby for over 50 years. She spent many years employed with the Kingfisher Motel, Hedley House and Pines Resort. She was a kind and gentle person beloved by all who had the good fortune to know her. She loved visiting with family (especially the grandchildren) and friends, in particular, her special friend and "honorary daughter", Judy McLAUGHLIN, as well as her wonderful neighbours, Al and Sheila GRANT. She also loved trips to New Brunswick to visit her sister Kate and brother George and trips back to Digby to see family and friends there. PETERS, Frances Rose - Age 92, passed away peacefully in Digby General Hospital on October 25, 2007. Born on August 30, 1915, in Lower East Pubnico, she was a daughter of the late Gordon and Annie (AMERIAULT) MacNUTT. "Puss," as she was lovingly nicknamed by her father, was the youngest of five children and the last surviving member of her immediate family. It became evident at a very early age that music would become the love of her life. At age 12, she began as an organist at St. Patrick's Church, Digby, a position that she filled off and on in the local diocese for many years. Her lifelong studies in music and dance led her to become a teacher of both, bringing much joy and happiness to many children and adults alike. In 1957 she formed the first Digby Majorette troupe, entertaining throughout Western Nova Scotia. From 1968 to 1978 she taught ballet and tap dancing classes at the Clare District schools, University Ste. Anne, as well as in Weymouth, Digby, and surrounding areas. From 1957 to 1985 and beyond, she was a music teacher and also the pianist for several bands including the "Troubadors" at Harbour View, the "Sounds of Velvet" and "Satin Serenade", who played locally and throughout the province, and finally the "Last Straws", entertaining at the Digby Yacht Club. A lover of nature and "natural ways", she enjoyed many happy hours working in and around her home and in her garden. She always took great pleasure in all the adventures and accomplishments of her family, of which she was so proud. She will be gratefully remembered and sadly missed by all those whose lives she touched. Frances was predeceased by her husband, Roy; brothers, Glenn and Donald, and sisters, Evelyn and Vivian. She is survived by daughters, Carolyn (Doug) McCLAFFERTY, Digby; Julia Roy, Falls Church, Va.; and Elizabeth WILSON, St. Catharines, Ont.; grandchildren, Marianne (Bert) HUDSON, Halifax; Michael (Michelle) McCLAFFERTY, Cary, N.C.; Lisa (Dan) MATTE, Dartmouth; Marcel (Susan) ROY, Great Falls, Va.; Denise (Chris) DUBIA, Falls Church, Va.; and Jim PACKER, St. Catharines, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Sarah HUDSON, and Kaylin and Evan McCLAFFERTY. COSMAN, Muriel Christie - 88, Annapolis Royal, formerly of Weymouth, Digby Co., passed away Thursday, October 25, 2007, in Annapolis Royal Nursing Home, Annapolis Royal. Born in Weymouth, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Hazel (CHRISTIE) HANKINSON. After graduating from Weymouth High School, she attended Provincial Normal College, Truro, and obtained her license to teach. During her teaching career, Muriel taught in Wilmot and Weymouth, retiring in 1979. During the Second World War, she worked as a teller with the Royal Bank of Canada, Weymouth and Halifax branches. Muriel was a charter member of the Church of Christ, Weymouth. She served as CYF Advisor for several years. She also acted as Area Secretary of the Christian Women's Fellowship (Christian Church - Disciples of Christ) for seven years, representing the Maritime Church in that office. Muriel was also heavily involved in programming at Johnston Christian Park (J.C.P.), South Range, from its opening in 1954, and continued until ill health forced her to retire. She is survived by son, David (Helen), Weymouth; daughter, Patricia (Robert) HOWELL, Amherst; grandchildren, Crystal (John) VAMPLEW, Maple Ridge, B.C.; Marc COSMAN, Weymouth; James HOWELL, Kuwait; Kimberley HOWELL, Connecticut; great- grandsons, Jack and Sam VAMPLEW, Maple Ridge, B.C.; brother, Daniel (Bessie) HANKINSON, Weymouth.
