2008 Carl Joseph DARRIS

DARRIS, Carl Joseph - 81, Mountain Lea Lodge, formerly of Bear River, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Boston, Mass., he was the oldest child of the late Otis J. and Mary L. (HAZELTON) DARRIS. Carl lived his early years in Digby. After serving in the Canadian Air Force for several years, he went to work for Fairey Aviation in Dartmouth. Later in life, he became a successful salesperson for Diversy Corporation (Canada) Limited. Carl had many hobbies and interests throughout life. He was an accomplished artist, working mostly in oils. He also did leather tooling and wood carving. He loved boating, fishing and gardening. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years. After living in Calgary, Alta., he and his wife, Marie moved back to Nova Scotia and lived in several areas including Dartmouth, Truro, South Rawdon and Upper Cunard, where they were known for their hospitality, developing many lasting friendships. After his wife became a resident of Tideview Terrace Nursing Home in Digby, Carl moved to Bear River where he remained until he moved to Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Carl was a member of Digby United Baptist Church, and a former member of First Baptist Church, Dartmouth, and Kentville United Baptist Church. He also served in several Masonic Lodges in Nova Scotia. He is survived by brothers, Otis (Belle), Coldbrook, Garry (Elaine BOYD), New Minas; sisters, Helen (David) CAMPBELL, Brenda (Ron) KELLY, Admiral Rock, Noel Shore; Joan (Robert) FOSTER, Brackley, P.E.I.; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Myrtle SELIG, Audrey McMAHON, and Lynn GREGORY; brother-in-law, Lionel (Lucie) McCORMICK. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Marie (McCORMICK) DARRIS. Carl will be best remembered for his love and devotion to his wife, Marie. There will be no visiting by request. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown. The Masonic Lodge will hold their service 1:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. with Rev. George Neily officiating, both in Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bear River. SCOTT, Debra Jane - 52, Bear River, passed away March 30, 2008, at home. Born in Toronto, Ont., she was the daughter of Jack VANSTONE, Oakville, Ont., and the late Janet "Pearl" VANSTONE. Debra moved to Nova Scotia in June 1999, from Wasaga Beach, Ont. She was a volunteer and would give support to those with cancer. She supported the Christian Children's Fund, and sponsored a child in Ethiopia. Debra was a strong advocate to change the young offenders act. She is survived by her common-law husband and caregiver, Gord BOOTH. She was the mother of Kelly Jane SCOTT, Dartmouth, and Wayne SCOTT, Black Point; grandmother to Wyatt and Savanna. There will be visitation 12-2 p.m. Thursday in Jayne's Funeral Home, 7 Birch St., Digby, where funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Rev. Donald Robertson officiating. BROWNING (THIBAULT), Marie Olive Perpetue - 85, Grosses Coques, died peacefully in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 3, 2008. Born in Grosses Coques on March 6, 1923, Olive was the daughter of the late John and Lizzie THIBAULT. Her early years were spent in Massachusetts, U.S.A., before her family returned to Grosses Coques where she attended grade school, and then high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Meteghan, and the Maritime Business College in Halifax. Olive served in the armed forces as a clerk in Halifax from 1943-1946. Following her marriage to Chuck in 1946, the couple lived in many postings across Canada and in Germany before settling in Grosses Coques when Chuck retired in 1971. She was predeceased by her husband, Chuck. She is survived by children, John (Marilyn), Grosses Coques; Danny (Patricia), Oliver, B.C.; Wendy, Vancouver, B.C.; grandchildren, Shari (Jeff), Karyn (James), and Kim; brother, Carl (Irene), Whycocomagh, and their children Russell and Carlene. For many years Olive taught swimming and figure skating. She was a 60 year Legion member. Olive loved her cats, gardening, reading, trips to Frenchy's and the buck store, and collecting dolls. Cremation has taken place. Family will have visitation in Meteghan Funeral Home on Monday, April 21, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass in St. Mary's Church, Church Point, on Tuesday, April 22, at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to St. Mary's Church Fund or Yarmouth Regional Hospital Fund.

CROMWELL-LANGFORD, Evelyn N. - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn N. CROMWELL-LANGFORD of Digby. Born in 1925 to Dale and Margaret CROMWELL (Southville), Evelyn is survived by daughters, Wilhelmina LANGFORD-BISHOP and Christine LANGFORD-MUNROE, both of Mississauga, Ont., as well as eight grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. She was surrounded by her family when she passed away peacefully in Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Ont., on April 5, 2008, at 2:05 a.m. She was predeceased be her husband, Richard LANGFORD, and son Harold Joseph CROMWELL LANGFORD (Weymouth Falls). Funeral service will be held in St. Theresa's Parish, Southville, on Friday, April 11, at 10 a.m. The viewing will take place in Jayne's Funeral Home, Weymouth, on Thursday, April 10, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. She will be sadly missed and never forgotten by all who loved her, may God rest her soul.

She enjoyed crafts such as knitting. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. McCULLOUGH, Miriam Josephine "MiMi" - 77, Mink Cove, Digby Co., passed away April 8, 2008, at 11:30 p.m. in Digby General Hospital, Digby, joyous reunion of our mother and father at Heaven's Gate. Born in Mink Cove, she was a daughter of the late Conrad and Maria (BAILEY) GIDNEY. MiMi loved life. Her interests were wide and varied. She was an avid curler and it pleased her to share her love for the game when teaching young curlers. Golfing, gardening and scrabble were enjoyed by her as well. As a member of the Seniors Club, she spent some happy hours playing Scrabble with her friends there. She loved music and often expressed it by playing the piano and singing. MiMi was often the life of the party and those who loved her and knew her will miss her dearly. TH�RIAULT, Rev. Edouard Joseph - 82, Belliveau Cove, died in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in his 57th year of priesthood. Born December 9, 1925, in Saint-Boniface, Man., he was the son of the late William Joseph TH�RIAULT and Edna Grace MELANSON. After graduating from College Saint-Anne, Church Point, he entered Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax, and was ordained priest on June 24, 1951, for the Archdiocese of Halifax, beginning his ministry in St. Thomas Parish, Joggins, 1951-1956. Three years after the foundation of the Diocese of Yarmouth, he requested his incardination in the new Diocese (1956). He was appointed vice-chancellor and chancellor for Yarmouth diocese (1956- 1966). During that time and until his partial retirement in 1991, he was parish priest in St-Alphonse, Wedgeport, Salmon River and Shelburne. During the last years of his priestly ministry, he presided Sunday mass in Corberrie, and served ecclesiastical appointments in the Diocese of Yarmouth, as president of the deanery and the priests' senate, was a member of the college of consultors and diocesan administrator. Father Eddie TH�RIAULT is survived by his sister, Th�r�se TH�RIAULT COUSINEAU, Verdun, Que.; his brother-in-law, Jean GAGNON, and by nephews and niece, Pierre and Jeanne COUSINEAU, Louis and Jacques GAGNON. He was predeceased by his brother priest, Father Louis; his sisters, Jeanne and Ad�le. BAILEY, Dorothy Mae - 87, Digby, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, with her loving family by her side. Born in Digby, she was a daughter of the late Agnes MILLER. Dorothy worked at Allan Fisheries for several years and also for Vincent Snow. She was a member of Acaciaville Baptist Church and Women's Auxiliary, enjoyed playing bingo, and volunteered for many harvest suppers held in the area. Dorothy is survived by daughters, Alfreda (Ronnie) HECTOR, Saint John, N.B.; Patricia (Gary) HILL, Montreal; Janice, Digby; sons, Dick (Angela), Digby; Webster (Sharon), Halifax; Dana (Gail), Digby; 30 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth (Byron) PATTERSON, Halifax; Ruby, Digby; and Jean, Halifax. Besides her mother, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Alfred BAILEY; daughter, Joan ENGLISH; son, Carl, and sister, Agnes "Toe" MILLER. EDMONDS, Stephen Ernest - 33, May 3, 1974 - April 1, 2008. With deepest sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our son, Stephen, in Wabasca, Alta. Stephen was the much loved son of Roger EDMONDS and Marie (RIGGS) EDMONDS-GREENE. Stephen was born in Halifax, moved to Digby County, and spent many years in Bear River. Stephen attended school in East Lawrencetown, Bear River, Digby, Annapolis, and Brockville, Ont. An honour graduate of Grenville Christian College, he was the recipient of several awards, including "Prefect of the year 1994" and was proud to serve as salutatorian for the graduating class of 1993-1994. After graduation, he settled in Ottawa for a number of years with his wife, Rebecca Lyn OFFICER. For the last two years, he worked in northern Alberta. Stephen always had a love for the woods, fishing, camping, and drawing. He extremely enjoyed his trips into White Sand Lake, Digby Co., so he was very much at home in the wilds of Alberta. His very favourite pastime was cooking and barbecuing for whomever he could, whenever he could. He was becoming quite the "Chef". His wonderful zany sense of humour and his smile could light up an entire room. He will be ever so sadly missed. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War from 1940-1945, and as an auto mechanic in Halifax. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. BAXTER, Margaret Elizabeth "Peggy" - 76, Digby, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in Tideview Terrace, where she had been a resident with her late husband, Murray, for several years. Born in Fredericton, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Margaret A. (HODGSON) and James RANKINE. Before coming to Digby, she resided in Yarmouth. In her early working years, she was a teller with the Bank of Nova Scotia, Digby. Later she was a member of the staff of the Digby Pines for many years. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Digby. Before becoming a resident of Tideview Terrace, Peggy was a volunteer at the Bethany Bargain Bin. Peggy always welcomed into her home the many friends of her sons from hockey and ball teams where they could count on having a good meal before a game. Peggy was predeceased by Murray BAXTER, her husband of 55 years, on January 3, 2008. She is survived by sons, James (Sarah), Winnipeg, Man.; Bruce (Laura), Oromocto, N.B.; grandchildren, Jamie and Margaret, Winnipeg; Matthew, Oromocto; Becky and Stacey, Hoyt, N.B.; Graham, Dayton, Ohio; Nicole LEWIS, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; great-grandchildren, Gage and Noah, Hoyt, N.B.; sister, Barbara (Bruce) WHITE, Charlottetown; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her oldest sons, Murray and Graham; brothers, James Ronald and Wilfred RANKINE; sisters, Mildred JONES and Gloria McINNIS. Family visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. and public visitation will be held Sunday, April 20, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 21, all in Jayne's Funeral Home, Digby, Rev. DOUCETTE, Mary Margaret - 90, Silver's Rest Home, Berwick, formerly of Kentville, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2008, in the home. Born on May 13, 1917 in Doucetteville, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late Asa and Catherine THIBAULT. She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. She had been employed for several years as a store clerk. Her passions were time spent with family and friends at the cottage and a good game of cards. She is survived by sister, Susie DOUCETTE, Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James "Jim"; an infant daughter; sister, Lucy DURLING; brothers, Alcide and Louie. There will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 21, in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Kentville, Father Craig Christenson officiating. MOREHOUSE, Oscar W. - 95, Hantsport, passed away in Victoria, B.C., on March 4, 2008. Born in Centreville, Digby Co., he was the son of the late Nelson and Ada MOREHOUSE. During the Second World War he served with the RCAF in Britain and North Africa. A machinist by trade, he was employed for many years in Hantsport and later in Wolfville. He was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, P.D.D.G.M., and recipient of the 50 year Jewel. He is survived by nieces, Elaine LEANDER and Gwen MAINS, both of United States. He was predeceased in 2006 by his beloved wife, Ruth (TURNER), and earlier by sisters, Rita, Vera and Murial (all of the United States). Throughout all their retirement years in Victoria, he and Ruth had frequent contact with their many friends in Nova Scotia, and with the Hantsport Baptist Church as members. Their cremated remains have returned "home" for interment in Riverbank Cemetery, and a memorial service for both of them will be held on April 30 at 2 p.m. in Hantsport Baptist Church, Rev. Dan Jamer officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in their memory may be made to the church or a charity of choice. A private family graveside service will follow.

THERIAULT, C. Francois "Frank" - 92, La Villa Acadienne, Meteghan, formerly of Quebec, passed away April 19, 2008, in the villa. Born in Saulnierville, he was a son of the late Delphie and Fanny (DEVEAU) THERIAULT. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War from 1940-1945, and as an auto mechanic in Halifax. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Alfred; sisters, Rosilda and Elizabeth. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Meteghan Funeral Home. Funeral will be held at a later date in Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville. Donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

Born in Digby, she was a daughter of the late Leigh and Bessie (BELL) MARSHALL. Betty was a graduate of Digby High School. During most of her adult life she served as a health care provider in various hospitals throughout the province of Nova Scotia. For many years Betty was an active member of the Upper Vaughan Hospital Auxiliary. She was also faithful member of the Upper Vaughan Baptist Church. Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Vernon; sister-in-law, Pearl CONRAD, Liverpool; niece, Joyce CROUSE, Mississauga, Ont.; nephews, Fred CONRAD, Okotoks, Alta.; James CONRAD, Fairview, and Terry CONRAD, Liverpool. She was predeceased by brothers, Alford, Kenneth and Winston, and sister, Florence. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798- 8317). There will be no visitation by request. A graveside service will be held at a later date. BOONE, Joseph - 78, Digby, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2008, in Digby Hospital. He was born in South River, N.L., on September 5, 1929, to the late Alfred and Beatrice BOONE. As a young man Joe fished off Spotted Island, Labrador, and helped make barrels with his grandfather until he came to the mainland where he joined the navy and had a full career. After retirement he worked for the Digby Post office. All who knew him enjoyed his sense of humour. Joe will be sadly missed by his loving and supportive wife of 56 years, Winnifred (DALEY); son, Mark (Wendy) BROOKSIDE; grandsons, Antony and Adam; brother, Melvin, N.L.; many other extended family members. Joe was predeceased by brothers, Ebenezara and Lawton; sisters, Emmie and Elsie. Cremation has taken place with care and assistance of Serenity Funeral Home & Crematorium. No flowers or visitation by request. A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. in Digby Baptist Church, Rev. Donald Robertson officiating. HARRIS, Joan Elizabeth - 68, Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth, formerly of Little River, Digby Co., passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in the manor, surrounded by her immediate family and the caring staff. Born November 14, 1939, in Whale Cove, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late Darrell and Kathleen (STANTON) BUNKER. Joan loved life, was very musical, and in spite of her sight disability, she could play a variety of instruments, including the piano and the accordion. She also loved dancing - there's no question that she's dancing a jig in heaven. Surviving are sisters, Evelyn (Arnold) NESBITT, Little River; Hazel FARNSWORTH, Digby; Debra (Billy) ADDINGTON, Little River; brothers, Clifford (Elsie) BUNKER, Tiddville; Murray BUNKER, Digby; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Arthur HARRIS, as well as by brothers, Darrell and Larry. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date at Joan's home in Little River, Digby Co.
