Digby Courier , 1906, Feb.23 DEATH OF MRS ELIZA ANN WRIGHT Mrs Eliza Ann WRIGHT passed peacefully away at the home of her son, Mr.P.L.WRIGHT at 6:15 Saturday evening the 17th. inst. ,aged 76 years. The deceased was born in Annapolis but had resided in here for many years. She had a large family connection anf many friends who will regret to hear of her death. Mrs WRIGHT was the widow of the late James WRIGHT of Annapolis and is survived by three sons; J.H. WRIGHT of Bear River , George B. of Boston and P.L.of Digby. and one daughter Mrs Malcolm MVKINNON of Kemloch, Inverness Co. CB. S She also leaves two sisters, Mrs Andrew HEGAN of Digby and Mrs Sarah SCOTT of Ivoryton CT.Rev. A.B. HIGGINS conducted a funeral service at the home of her son , Tuesday afternoon after which the remains were conveyed to Annapolis via the eastbound express,accompanied by her son , Mr. J.H. WRIGHT and grand child Miss Grace WRIGHT . Interment took place in Woodlawn Cemetery. Services being conducted at the grave by the Rev. Norman W. WHITMAN of the Annapolis Baptist Church

DEATH OF AN AGED CITIZEN GEORGE GERMAN Esq, one of the oldest residents of Clare, died at his home in Meteghan, Sunday night, aged 92 years.The deceased was highly respected by all who knew him and his death will be learned with regret by many of our readers. He was born at Cedar lake, Yarmouth County in 1814 and could tell many interesting stories of life in this County during the greater part of the last century. He is survived by two sons, Capt. Thomas German, General Merchant, Meteghan, and William, proprietor of the Bay View Hotel of the same village, and four daughters, Mrs. Thomas HARDING, Boston, Miss Mina GERMAN, of the same city, Mrs. James ROBICHAUD, of Stoughton Junction, U.S. and Mrs Edward DEVEAU, of Woodville, Digby Co. The Courier extends its deepest sympathy to the large circle of bereaved relatives and friends.

DEATH OF DARRELL LEWIS A Halifax dispatcher announces the death of Darrell LEWIS which occured in that city yesterday morning. The deceased was well known here having sailed out of this port for many years on tug boats and other craft. He leaves a widow and one child who reside in Digby;also his parents Capt.and Mrs Waitstill LEWIS of Freeport , four brothers, and 2 sisters . The remains will arrive here this afternoon and go forward to Freeport for interment . The courier extends its deepest sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends.

1906 Jacob William Ditmars

Mr. Jacob William DITMARS of Deep Brook ,aged 89 years passed away on Friday morning . The deceased had been in failing health for some time and the end came very peacefully. He was always a respectful citizen , a kind and obliging neighbor and loved and reverend by all. He was a life long member of the Church of England and the funeral took place on Monday afternoon from the residence of his son J.C. W. DITMARS with whom he has made his home this last few years, was conducted by the Rev. L. LOCKWARD of Clementsport, after which the remains were taken to Clementsport and interred in the Church of England burying ground. The deceased leaves two sons beside other relatives and friends to mourn their loss . We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Freeport news The body of Mr. Darrell LEWIS was brought from Digby by the tag George L. ,Capt. C.F. LEWIS ,brother of the deceased ,arriving Saturday about three p.m. The corpse was at once conveyed to the home of Capt. and Mrs Waitstill LEWIS . Funeral took place Sunday afternoon and was largely attended . Mrs LEWIS ,wife of the deceased ,also Mrs Charles LEWIS and sister Miss Mabel HOLDSWORTH and Miss Carrie LEWIS who had been in Yarmouth for a few days and Mr. Murray LEWIS came from Digby . Mrs [Dr.] MORRISON of Cape Breton ,Capt. Ernest and Albert were not able to be present.

FREEPORT NEWS Death has again visited our little village and taken one of our esteemed neighbours and friends , Mrs Jefferson STEVENS . She was strickened with paralysis on Sunday morning . She lived for five days . The deceased was 69 yrs. 9 mos. she leaves a sorrowing husband and three sons to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate wife and mother.The bereft ones have the sympathy of the entire community . 1907 Rev. Dr. Morse

ONE OF LTHE OLDEST CLERGYMEN IN THE PROVINCE PASSES PEACEFULLY AWAY. At the time of his birthday party only a month ago, the Rev. J.C. MORSE, D.D., displayed an intellectual vigor that so completely disguised his physical weakness, most of those who were present were under the impression that he was likely to remain with us for years to come. But, it seems that on March 11th, he experienced a serious increase of the heart trouble with which he had been affected for several years, and notwithstanding the valiant resistance of his strong constitution, all that could be done by a skillful physician, and the tender nursing of his loved ones, the disease made steady progress, the end coming at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, April 21st. His last moments were brightly illuminated by that strong faith, which, for more than sixty-nine years, had been the controlling principle of his life. His final words to the writer being "Preach the Gospel". This noble soldier of Christ was born at Paradise, Annapolis Co., March 23rd, 1819. He was converted at the age of 19, and almost immediately he began preaching the gospel. For 62 years he had the pastoral oversight of the entire Baptist interest on Digby Neck. During this long pastorate he baptized a very large number. Many of whom have passed within the vale, many more are living and working for Jesus in other parts of the world - while the remainder form the majority of the Baptist church membership in the churches at Rossway, Waterford, Centreville, Sandy Cove and Little River. Among these is the first one the aged minister baptized, Mr. Kelsey DENTON, of Little River, when the candidate was eighteen years old and the minister twenty-one, sometime in April, sixty-seven years ago. He also conducted numerous funerals and solemnized a great many marriages. In one family, he married four generations. Dr. MORSE was twice married, the maiden name of his first wife being Isabelle WOODWORTH, by whom he had nine children. His second wife was Frances DAKIN, who with their two children survive him. He also has living twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. MORSE, her son Charles MORSE, and her daughter, Mrs. Mary DELANCY, in their great affliction, have the earnest heart sympathy of every one in this region, of all the Baptists in the Atlantic Provinces and of thousands of our people who have emigrated to other sections. Dr. MORSE was a typical example of the old fashioned Baptist minister. He possessed remarkable physical strength, splendid mental abilities, and a deep, strong, and unvarying spirituality. As a pulpit orator, in his prime, he was almost without an equal. His address at the Baptist Convention held in Bridgetown in 1892, will rank with the very best ever heard in Canada, as his thought and language expanded with the development of his subject, the great throng quite forgot the distinguished speakers who were present from the United States and other parts of Canada. This wonderful example of Christian eloquence left an impression that can never be effaced. THE FUNERAL The funeral was conducted at Sandy Cove, on Wednesday, April 24th. A very brief service was held at the house, after which the remains were borne to the Church preceeded by five clergymen, and followed by a great throng of mourners and friends. The service was conducted by the pastor at Sandy Cove, Rev. A.F. BROWNE. After a few well chosen remarks he expessed his regret that Rev. J.R. SAUNDERS had not been able to come but had sent a letter, expressing his great appreciation of the worth and character and friendship of the departed. This letter was then read. Then after a beautiful solo, the leader called upon R.O. MORSE, of Westport. Mr. Morse gave a glowing eulogy in regard to him who had been his father's cousin and said that while the MORSE'S had a good deal of family pride, there was no name that was dearer to that family, than that of Dr. J.C. MORSE. Then Rev. J.T. EATON, Rev. A.J. ARCHIBALD and Rev. R.B. MACK were called upon in turn, and each expressed their highest appreciation of the man that was, and is. The last testimony on this notable occasion was given by Mr. Kelsey DENTON, a man, 85 years of age. He was asked to speak because he was the first man that Dr. MORSE had baptized. Mr. DENTON was listened to with much appreciation. It was a day of great sorrow for those who loved him, and they were not a few, it was a day of great triumph for those who knew him, for they were certain that death had not obtained the victory but that he had triumphed over death. Considering the inclemency of the weather the funeral was very large.

1907 John Chipman Morse

Death of Dr. J. C. MORSE John Chipman MORSE, D. D., for over sixty years pastor of Baptist Churches on Digby Neck, died at his home in Sandy Cove, Digby County, on Sabbath, April 21st, after a brief illness. The deceased resigned his charge about four years ago, but up to within a week of his death was quite active. He was born at West Paradise, Annapolis County, and on entering the ministry at once took up his life work on Digby Neck, where he labored faithfully. Six years ago the honorary degree of D. D. was confered upon him by Acadia College. Dr. MORSE was twice married. His first wife was Isabelle, daughter of the late Mr. Abner WOODWORTH, of Weston. She was the mother of ten children all of whom have passed away. His second wife, who survives him, was Miss Fanny DAKIN, of Westport. Two children survive, Charles MORSE, of Sydney, and Miss Mary MORSE, who resided with her parents.

DEATH OF ASA RAYMOND Mr. Asa RAYMOND , an aged and respected citizen of Mink Cove passed away Sunday at the advanced age of 80 years and 7 months. He is survived by a widow to whom he had been married 68 years . They had a family of thirteen , seven of whom survive their father.The funeral was held Wednesday with interment at Sandy Cove. The services being conducted by Rev. Mr. BROWN. The Courier extends its sympathy to the large circle of bereaved relatives and friends throughout Digby county and else where.

DEATH AT BRIGHTON CAPT. H.E.WYMAN , A WELL KNOWN MASTER MARINER , NOW AT REST We regret this week to chroncile among a large number of deaths that of Capt. W. E. WYMAN , formerly of Freeport but who has resided at Brighton for nearly a quarter of a century. He passed peacefully away Friday afternoon after suffering for some time with a cancer in the stomach.The deceased was born in Freeport on Christmas Day 1835 and had there fore passed his 72 nd. birthday.He began going to sea while very young and at the age of 18 was placed in command. He continued to sail in the West Indies and European trade until his retirement since which he has been salesman in his son-in law's general store in Brighton. He never lost a man or a vessel during his years at sea but had been dismasted a couple of times in severe hurricanes. On August 13th.1863 he became a member of Belfast[Ireland ]lodge no.106 A.F. &A.M. .His Masonic card now being in the possesion of his youngest son. He is survived by a widow , three sons , T.W. of Freeport , Jacob of Tiverton , Herman Jr. of Kentville and one daughter Mrs Charles VAN BLARCOM of Brighton with whom her parents resided. The remains were taken to Freeport for interment , the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. SAUNDERS of the Freeport Baptist Church of which the deceased had been a memember for many years. He is survived by a brother Capt. Wm. WYMAN of Freeport and many other relatives and friends in his native village as well as Brighton who mourn the loss of a good friend and a highly respected citizen.

Digby courier 10 April 1908 THE DEATH OF SAMUEL SANDERSON ANOTHER AGED AND RESPECTED CITIZEN PASSED AWAY A telephone message to the Courier Tuesday morning announced the death of Mr. Samuel SANDERSON of Waterford at the advanced age of 83 years after only a few days illness. He had , however been quite feeble for several months , but had always previous to that , enjoyed good health. The deceased was born in England in June 1825 and came to this country when twelve years of age residing in Weymouth and later in Barton on Speicht's Cove , as it was then called . He married Frances SPEICHTS , a sister of Edward SPEICHTS of Barton who still survives him. About 33 years ago Mr and Mrs SANDERSON and family moved across the Bay to Waterford, Digby Neck, where they have since resided. He is the last of his own family , his brother Richard SANDERSON , a long time Custom Officier at Barton died many years ago. The deceased is survived by six sons and five daughters , Alexander, Frank and George returning home from Waltham MA who with other members of the family attended the funeral which took place yesterday with interment at Rossway, the services at the house and grave being conducted by Rev. Wm. Driffield , rector of the Holy Trinity Church, Digby

DEATH OF MRS JARED TOZIER A dispatch announces the death of Mrs Jared TOZIER , which occured at her home in Northesk NB , Wednesday morning at 10 O'Clock after a lingering illness of more than a year and a half,aged 62 years.The deceased was an active member of the Baptist church and always took a deep interest in everything that was for the good of the community and by her death many people in that town and vicinity loses a good friend who will long be remembered. She leaves three sons , Dr. Fred , of Rexton NB ,Thomas , chief train despatcher at Campbellton and Stanley who resides at home;two daughters, Mrs RUSSELL of Newscastle ,and Jennie at home. She is also survived by four brothers among them Mr. G.A VYE of this town and three sisters. The funeral will be held from her late home tomorrow with interment in the Baptist cemetery , the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. BROWNE, pastor of the Northesk Baptist Church.

George MALLETT , one of the best known skippers sailing out of St.Mary's Bay died at his home at Weymouth on the night of Sunday 14th after a long illness during which he at times suffered intensely.Capt. MALLETT who was about fifty years of age ,formerly lived at Port Gilbert and was a son of the late Capt. George A. MALLETT. He leaves a widow, formerly Miss Nellie HOGAN . Interment was made at St. Croix, R. C. Cemetery at Plympton.

She was the daughter of of the late Mr. & Mrs Isaac DAKIN of Centerville Digby Neck and in her early years joined the Centerville Baptist Church.She is survived by an aged husband , four daughters and one son Mrs D. M. COSSABOOM , Dorchester Mass.;Mrs Geo.A. HOLMES , Centerville Digby County;Mrs Thomas F. ANDERSON , Dorchester Mass;Mrs Joseph W. BATEMAN of South Boston Mass and Mr. Geo. DAKIN who resides at home. . She also leaves four brothers and one sister Marvin, Holland , Elkanah and Freeman DAKIN and Mrs Lemuel MOREHOUSE all of Centerville . The funeral was held from her late home yesterday afternoon with interment in the Methodist Cemetery, the services being conducted by Rev. A.J. ARCHIBALD , pastor of the Digby Baptist church. DEATH OF HILARY THIBAULT Former Yarmouth Lawyer passed away on Sunday The TIMES deeply regrets to announce the death of Hilary THIBAULT, which occurred on Sunday, at his home, Mayflower, Digby county. Deceased, who was 31 years of age, was a victim of tuberculosis from which he had suffered for over two years. He was a son of Cyriac THIBAULT and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Possessed of a common school education, he decided to become a lawyer and entered St. Ann's College, Church Point, a few years ago, where he completed a classical course. From St. Anne's he went to Dalhousie University, and after his graduation in 1907, he was admitted to the Bar. From Halifax he came to the law office of E. H. Armstrong, K.C., Yarmouth, where he remained for a few years, but owing to ill health he was compelled to leave and since then had been in failing health. Rev. Father BRACQ, rector of Salmon River, and a cousin of the deceased young man, Rev. Father THIBAULT, of Newfoundland, admitted the last rites of consolation of the Roman Catholic church. The funeral took place at Salmon River on the 18th and was one of the largest ever held in that place. The service at the house was conducted by Rev. Father BRACQ. Solemn High mass was sung by Rev. Father COMEAU, of Quinan, Yarmouth County. In the Sanctuary were the Rev. Father THIBAULT and the Rev. Father COMEAU of Eelbrook. Rev. Father DEVEAU, of Wedgeport, a cousin of the deceased, presided at the organ. In the choir were A. F. HACHE, J.P. Frank ROBICHEAU, Meteghan, Dr. MELANSON, Eel Brook, and Herman MARTIN, of Yarmouth. The church was draped in black. Miss Alma THIBAULT, a nurse at the Greenwich Hospital, New York, and sister of the deceased, arrived the morning of the funeral. Jerome DOUCET, of Wedgeport, was also in attendance. The TIMES offers sympathy and condolence to the bereaved family.

The people of Digby were shocked Sunday morning to hear of the death of Mr. John H. SYDA who passed away at 7 o'clock that morning, aged 64 years after only a few days illness. Pneumonia was the direct cause of his death. Up to within a few minutes of the end he was able to give instructions regarding his business affairs. Mr. SYDA ws identified with the commercial life of Digby for forty years. In 1875 he and Captain James W. COUSINS, started the present fish firm of Syda & Cousins and for five years previous to that he was in business for himself. He was also president of the old Digby Canning Co. No other man was better known about Digby and Annapolis counties than Mr. SYDA, especially among the fishermen and those interested in marine affairs. The deceased was a son of the late Doctor Hubert SYDA, of Digby, and was thrice married. His first wife was a daughter of Capt. Daniel SMALLIE, of Digby, and his second wife a daughter of Stephen WARNE , of Digby, by whom he had two children, Haylet, in business here, and Harry, who was drowned in the Bay of Fundy several years ago. His third wife was Elizabeth, daughter of the late Jacob HARDY, of Smith's Cove, who survives. From this union were born twelve children, eleven of whom are living, viz: Maud, wife of Maj. M. C. DENTON, of Digby; Grace, wife of Harry FITZRANDOLPH, of Round Hill; Edith and Douglas, of West Medway, Mass; Daisy, Gerald, Esther, Harold, Kenneth, Dorothy, and Keith at home. A stepmother, two half-bothers and one half-sister reside at Round Hill, Annapolis county. Mr. SYDA was twice elected a member of Digby's town council and in one of the elections was at the head of the poll. In politics he was a Conservative. He was also an enthusiastic Mason, being a member of King Solomon Lodge, No. 54, A.F. and A.M. He was a regular attendant and had faithfully filled the office of Inside Guardian for nearly a quarter of a century. The funeral, which was a Masonic one, was held from his late residence Tuesday afternoon, with interment in the Methodist cemetery, the service at the house and the grave being conducted by Rev. G. W. F. GLENDEONING, pastor of the Digby Methodist church, assisted by Rev. A. J. ARCHIBALD, pastor of the Digby Baptist church. The Masonic service was read by the Worshipful Master of the lodge, Mr. J. Fred RICE and by the Grand Chaplian, Rev. Wm. DRIFFIELD., rector of Holy Trinity Church. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, showing the great popularity of the deceased.

DEATH OF JOHN ADAMS The death occured at his home on Friday last of John ADAMS of Bay View ,after a lingering illness,at the advanced age of eighty-five years and eight months -the last of a family of eleven. He leaves a widow ,five daughters; Mrs Alex BEATON ,of Weymouth ;Mrs E. MCALONA of Boston;Mrs John POST of Culloden ; Mrs Emma MADDEN of Amherst and Miss Effie at home besides a son Arthur of Providence RI to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and a kind father.Although ailing for some time past, his sudden demise was a shock to his many friends. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2PM from his late residence . The service was conducted by the Rev. G. W. P. GLENDENNING of Digby,assisted by the Rev. Mr. LINDSAY of Bay View Interment was in the Methodist cemetery ,Culloden. The pallbearers were Mr. George ADAMS, of Deep Brook;Charlie,Allen and Sandy ADAMS of Bay View , nephews of the deceased.The funeral was largely arrended . Mr. ADAMS left a large circle of relatives and friends .He was closely related to the Right Hon.Sir Charles TUPPER ,his mother's sister being the mother of Sir Charles. he belongs to a family known for its longevity.his brother,sister and mother lived to the age of 84 years.
