1902 Mrs Elizabeth Armstrong

DEATH OF AN AGED LADY MRS ARMSTRONG PASSES TO REST AT THE HOME OF HER NIECE, SMITH'S COVE Mrs Elizabeth ARMSTRONG died at the home of neice, Mrs Isaac SMITH , Smith's Cove at 3 oclock , Friday afternoon, aged 84 years. The deceased was the fifth child and fourth daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth [WINCHESTER ] MCCORMICK and was born at Smith's Cove, Digby County, June 12 1818. , where her parents resided for many years and reared a large family. Her paternal grandfather , Samuel MC CORMICK, Sr. a Presbyterian of Scottish ancestry, emigrated from Ulster , Ireland [whither his grandfather had led from religious persecution in 1687]during 1774 to Nova Scotia and after a short residence both at Halifax and Horton , located in Granville about the close of the eighteenth century.His wife was Mary BLAIR. Mrs Armstrong's maternal grand father Spenser WINCHESTER was the eldest child of Nathan and Susan [BRACKENBURY] WINCHESTER., a pre loyalist colonist from Massachusetts , who domiciled at Rosette , Annapolis County in 1761 ,under the supervision of Hon. Henry EVANS, Judge of Court of Common Pleas and MPP for that County from June 17 1777 to his death. , November 2, 1782. the lady just demised was thrice married-first to the late Thomas DALEY secondly to the late Moses DYKEMAN and afterwards to Rev. George ARMSTRONG D.D. , many years pastor of the Baptist church in Bridgetown and who died a few years since, deeply lamented. Many of the latter years of Mrs ARMSTRONG'S life had been spent at Bridgetown. one brother , Samuel survives her who resides in the west. Her brother , James died at his home in Boston , Thursday Feb.27th. Services were conducted at the Cove by Rev. Ward FISHER assisted by Evangelist WALDRON. the remains were taken to Bridgetown for interment via Saturday's express.

1902 Thomas Hill

AN OLD RESIDENT OF ACACIAVILLE PASSES PEACEFULLY AWAY AFTER A LONG PAINFUL ILLNESS A correspondent sends us the following . Among the many immigrants from England on board the ship Trafalgar , Capt. WELBORN , when amidst a dense fog ,she went ashore on the north side of Brier Island , Nova Scotia , May 28th. 1817 were Richard STAILING sr, father of the late George STAILING , Digby ;John R. LIGHTFOOT , M.D. also a citzen of Digby during many subsquent years;John Henry INGLIS or INGLES who with Mr. STAILING eventually settled in Dalhousie , Annapolis Couinty and John Adam HILL sr. whose wife was Miss Eliza Greenfield and who finally became the founder of Hillsdale , New Tusket ;in 1829.Their eldest son ,Thomas , the subject of this memoir , was born August 10 1815 -nearly two years before leaving Engalnd.At the age of thirty -six in 1851 , he became a member of the New Tusket Baptist Church , then under the pastorate of the late Rev. Charles RANDALL and in the autumn of 1865 enrolled himself as a Son of Temperance in the Randall Division no. 231 soon afters its organization there the 14 th. of October in that year. He was thrice married first to Miss Jane BURNS ;whose eldest daughter Sara A. is the partner of William MULLEN Jr. of Havelock while the other daughter Jane was the first wife of Stephen P. SABEAN of same place. After decease of his companion , Mr. HILL wedded Eliza , a daughter of the late Robert and Eliza SABEAN of Fort Point , Weymouth. The children by this alliance were as follows James Edgar, wedded Augusta D. youngest daughter of the late Stephen and Barbar WILSON of HillGrove and now residing in Lynn Mass. Robert B. married Ameret W. youngest child of the late Robert and Sarah REED also of HillGrove but now in Lynn Mass. Amanda died while young; Adeliade married late Charles R. BACON formerly of Hill Grove and later living in Westville but now in state of Massachusetts William W. ; Stephen ;-both married and also residing in that state;David F. wedded Lennie WHITE , likewise in Massachusettsand John G. whose first wife was Bertha I. eldest daughter of James and Annie FRANKLIN of Hill Grove and who after her death married Alva second daughter of Thomas and Mary J. Gavel WOODMAN , Westville where he now resides. Mr. Thomas HILL'S second wife having now deceased, he was united in wedlock to Dorcas A. eldest daughter of late Aaron and Sarah SABEAN of Havelock who survives him. About thirty years ago , Mr. Hill with his second partner and their family removed from Hillsdale to Acaciaville , then to Grand Joggins , where after wards resided, prosecuting his former occupation of miller and farmer many years.He was also some time engineer in the steam tannery there , managed by Daniel HAWKSWORTH . Soon after removing to Acaciaville he transferred membership to the Hill Grove Church :-and in Hope Division , no. 154 , Sons of Temperance and was its faithful treasure many years. The deceased was eminent by consistent zeal and preservering in every sphere of usefulness that opened before him. A dutiful child,devoted husband , fond parent, exemplary christian ,unswerving , fearless advocate of total abstinenceand prohibition as well as all moral reforms , a hospitable host, kind neighbour , friend of the poor and oppressed of all classes. After a long useful career , Mr. Thomas HILL , departed this life on the 7th. of March 1902 at his residence , Acaciaville aged 86 years and 7 months with the full assurance of eternal life , leaving one brother , Mr. John HILL of New Tusket , a widow , six sons , two daughters.many grand children besides many other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. The funeral occured on thefollowing Sunday in the Baptist church of HillGrove , the pastor Rev. J.W. R. Bancroft and was largely attended . The Courier extend sympathy to the afficted family and friends in their deep bereavement.

1902 Caroline HANKINSON

The death of Miss Caroline HANKINSON Wednesday of last week removes another aged and well known native of this town. The deceased was 80 years of age and had been confined to her bed for nearly three months. She died at her brother�s, Mr. George HANKINSON�s, with whom she had been living since the first of August. Prior to that for some time she had been nearly helpless. The funeral took place Friday at the Parish Church. Rev. A. Garden conducting the service; the interment was in the Episcopal Cemetery.

1902 William HANKINSON

Just a week later, Wednesday of this week Mr. William HANKINSON, a brother of Miss Caroline HANKINSON, died after a brief illness that was not at first considered serious, at the advanced age of 90. The funeral takes place today. The deceased leaves a sister, Mrs. GREEN, of Lynn, two brothers, Mr. George and Mr. Gilbert HANKINSON and a daughter, Mrs. Henry TAYLOR, with whom he had made his home for some years. The Hankinsons were among the earliest settlers of Weymouth and their old homestead is still standing.

1902 Joseph Nichols

Digby Courier DEc.12, 1902 THE LATE JOseph NICHOLS AN AGED DIGBY MAN DIED IN SIMESTONE ME A correspondent writes; Joseph NICHOLS of Simestone ME died at the home of his son in law ,Charles E. LEWIS of Bridgewater ME at 4:30 Sunday morning. , Nov. 30th after an illness of thirteen days.The cause of his death was a stroke of paralysiswhich rendered him speechless.He was nearly 80 years old. The deceased was born March 6th 1823 and was a native of Digby NS. He married Miss Nancy LEWIS of Digby on the 11th of May 1848 at Hillsborough NS. He moved from NS the same year and settled at Jacksontown NB and resided there about two years;from there he moved to Digby NS in 1850 and lived there 44 years. From there the family moved to Fort Fairfield ME about nine years ago. He lived at Fort Fairfield ,seven years and two years ago , the family moved to Simestone ME where he has resided ever since. He leaves a wife and a brother , two sons Howard of Simestone MEamd Richard Nichols of Fort Fairfield ME and six daughters Mrs James H. GOOD and Mrs Charles HOYT of Fort Fairfield ME, Mrs Charles E.LEWIS and Mrs Richard McCleary of Bridgewater ME ;mrs Robert McIntosh of Glassville NB and Mrs William Card of Auburn ME and 28 grandchildren to mourn their loss.The deceased was taken to Fort Fairfield Tuesday morning Dec. 2nd. THe funeral sermon was preached at the Free Baptist Church., Rev. Mr. Miller officiating. The remains were interred in Riverside Cemetery.

1903 Capt. Walter Amberman

Digby Courier Friday 30 Jan.1903 Annapolis A dispatch was received here today from St. Thomas WI by Pickels & Mills , Managing owner of the Schnooner Bartholdi , informing them that the vessel had left Trinidad Port of Spain Dec. 23 bound for FL had put into port there in charge of the Mate with 2 masts gone , leaking badly and that Capt. Walter AMBERMAN had died during the passage and was buried at sea. Capt. AMBERMAN was about 43 and married two years ago to May the daughter of Adelbert HARDWICK of Moschelle who has since accompanied him on his voyages . He was part owner of the vessel.

1903 Harry SYDA

DROWNED OFF SEAL ISLAND Harry SYDA and Edward LANK, members of the Daisy Linden crew were drowned while hauling trawl off Seal Island. Capt. Wm. SNOW says the dory capsized. Edward LANK was from Campobello and a widower. Harry SYDA aged 24 was the son of councillor John H. SYDA of the firm Syda & Cousins, wholesale fish dealers.

1903 Harold Oliver

Port Gilbert news Dennis OLIVER had the misforture to loss his littles son Harold last week. We sympathize with him in his severe loss. Harold was a bright little fellow and loved by all his companions.

1903 Phoebe CHURCHILL

" Mrs. Phoebe CHURCHILL, widow of the late Thomas CHURCHILL, died very suddenly on Saturday last. She went to bed in her usual good health, Friday night, but on entering her room Saturday morning, she was found to be dead. Her body will be taken to Yarmouth for burial ". ( death date calculated to be 9 May 1903 -- J.T. ).

1903 Edmund Benson

Digby Courier Friday 29 May 1903 DEATH OF EDMUND BENSON By the death of Mr. Edmund BENSON which occured at his home on Friday evening , Bear River loses a life long resident and the Baptist Church one of its staunchest members. Mr. BENSON was the son of the late William BENSON and the last of a family of eleven children., five sons and six daughters. In his youth he married Miss Susan LOW of Clementsport who with their family of four sons and one daughter survive to mourn their loss. The sons are Freeman, Robert, John and Edward and the only daughter Mrs Harry SHAW of Yarmouth. All were present at the funeral but John who is at present absent in Boston. The deceased was 78 years of age and was enjoying excellent health until two days before his death when he was seized with pneumonia. The funeral took place at three o'clock Sunday , the large attendence testifting to the respect in which he was held by his fellow townsmen. The service was conducted by Pastor PORTER of the Baptist Church who conforted the mourners with a feeling and impressive adress.

1903 Mrs Susan Jane Wagoner

Digby Courier 10 July 1903 LAST SURVIVOR A correspondent writes : It becomes our duty to chroncicle the death of the last survivor in the first generation from the United Empire or King's American Loyalists who settled in Weymouth namely Mrs Susan Jane ,widow of the late Samuel B. WAGONER and a daughter of William and Elizabeth LICET WILLSON,generally called WILSON who domiciledin 1783 on lot no. 13 Block 0 , Botsford Grant , situtated on Northern side of the Sissiboo River and now owned by Mr. Frank HANKINSON . She was born July 31st. , 1812 ,married Oct. 8, 1829 by the Rev. Donald McGregor , then pastor of the Sissibboo Baptist Church. The family consisted of the following Richard, Thomas Edward,William Henry,James, Annie , Welthia Ann, David, Samuel, Susan Rosetta,Jeremiah, Elias Milberry, and Orrin Studley The deceased lady was many years a consistment member of Baptist church having been baptized by Rev. Michael Normandy . After an exemplary , Christian life , Mrs WAGONER died in Plympton , 8th of June 1903 aged 91 years , eleven months and seven days leaving nine children ,74 grandchildren , 132 great grand children ,and 19 great, great grandchildren to mourn the departure of a loving relative and devoted friend but not without hope of everlasting felicity . Her funeral on the 11th. ult. was conducted by hte Pastor C. W. Grenier and was largely attended.

1904 Sally Titus Hayden

Mrs. Sally HAYDEN passed away Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at the ripe age of 91 years. She got up as usual, made her bed, went out to the door, came back and sat down in her chair and expired. This lady was well known in Digby county as "Aunt Sally." Always a friend to everyone. Her first husband was Jacob TITUS, 2nd being Alexander URQUHART while the 3rd was a Mr. HAYDEN of Victoria Beach, Granville. She leaves three sons William TITUS, of Freeport, Edward and Howard, of Westport, to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother. We extend our heart felt sympathy to the bereaved ones.

1904 Alonzo Ossinger

Friday Sept. 9, 1904 Digby Courier Freeport news The death occured at his home on sunday morning at ten o'clock Sept. 4 of Capt. Samuel TEED . He was one of the oldest residents of this place being eighty-four years of age. He is survivrd by eight children , four sons and four daughters. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon . Hid daughter Mrs Oscar PRESCOTT of Chelsea came home to atttend the funeral.

Digby Courier Friday Oct. 28, 1904 DEATH OF MRS. CHALONER Mrs. Harriet Augusta , wife of Mr. John CHALONER died at her home Montague street, five o'clock , Wednesday afternoon , aged 66 years. The deceased was the eldest daughter of the late James SMALLIE , formerly one of Digby's leading merchants.She leaves besides her husband , an adopted daughter , wife of Rev. A. M. HILL of Fairville NB. She is also survived by two sisters , the Misses Emma and Mary SMALLIE of this town. Mrs. CHALONER was a member of the Baptist Church and a regular attendant when health permitted. Her health was caused by a stroke of paralysis. the funeral will be held from her late residence tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock. , the service being conducted by Rev. A. J. Archibald , pastor of the Digby Baptist Church and at the grave by Rev. H.A, Harley , rector of Holy Trinity . Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.

1905 Stanley Outhouse

Freeport news It is with sadness we have to record the death of one of our most highly esteemed young men, Stanley OUTHOUSE, son of Capt. and Mrs James OUTHOUSE. Over a year ago he came home from the sea in poor health and it and it has been sorrow that we noted his vitality gradually yielding to the dreaded disease consumption .Although everything was done to prolong his stay among us he passed peacefully away Saturday morning , June 17th.having been a great sufferer , leaving to mourn their loss , mother, father, three sisters . The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon , conducted by Rev. I. B. COLWELL, assisted by Rev. E. C. FORD of Westport. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved family family and friends

Capt. Chas. P. THOMAS died at his home in Sandy Cove ,christmas day aged 80 yrs. .The deceased was a well known Master Marnier . He was born in England , but redsided in Sandy cove for many years.He is survived by a widow, three sons, four daughters . Capt. THOMAS was a member od Keith Lodge AF&AM Bear River. The funeral was held from his late home at two o'clock yesterday afternoon. With interment in Sandy cove . The services being conducted by Rev. Mr. WHITMAN ,pastor of the Baptist Church in the village . The Courier extends sympathy to the large circle of berreaved relatives and friends.
