CHISHOLM - At Digby, N.S., April 2nd, (1915), Mary, wife of Mr. Thomas CHISHOLM, leaving an aged husband, two sons, five daughters and several half sisters, twenty grandchildren and six great-grandchildren to mourn. Mary Chisholm was a d/o William Keys WILSON and Annabelle CHANDLER of Windsor.

[ Please note his picture appeared with this article ] DEATH OF LEANDER MORSE HE WAS THE OLDEST SCHOOL INSPECTOR IN THE PROVINCE Leander S. MORSE , Esq. , school inspector for the Counties oF Annapolis and Digby and the senior inspector in Nova Scotia died at the Waverly Hotel , Digby at an early hour Sunday morning., aged seventy -two years.He had been in ill health for some time but was always able to attend to business until a few weeks ago.He has spent Christmas with his daughter in New York and returned home ill accompanied by Mrs MORSE. He was so ill that they did not go to their residence on Queen Street but decided to remain for a time at the Waverly Hotel. He is survived by a widow , formerly Miss TUPPER of Bridgetown and two sons Frank who is ill in New York and William in California and one daughter Mrs J.Waldo SMITH of New York who arrived here on Friday. Mr. MORSE was a member of the Digby Baptist Church and of the choir. His character could not be surpassed . He was every body's friend and nobody's enemy. He did much to improve the Digby and Annapolis county schools during the past quarter of a century. He was a recognized educational authority of high standing. He was born at Nictaux , Annapolis County November 22nd. 1843. His ancestors were among the best and most influentia lof our old pioneer settlers of 1760. He was educated at Horton Academy and Acadia College, graduating from the latter institution in 1866 at the head of his class and in addition receiving diplomas for honors in Classics After studying law in the office of T. D. RUGGLES QC , Bridgetown and the late Hon . J. W. RITCHIE , Halifax , he was admitted to the Bar in 1870 having obtained a first class certificate in his final examination.He practised in Bridgetown for a time in partnership with the late Hon. J.C. TROOP , Speaker of the House of Assembly . on the death of Mr. TROOP he entered into partnership with J.G.H. PARKER under the name of MORSE and PARKER, which partnership continued until December 31 st. 1879. In March 1871 he was appointed inspector of schools for the County of annapolis and in 1876 was appointed a master of the Supreme Court. In 1877 Mr. MORSE went to Great Btitain as a delegrate to investigate the claims of the descendents of Annie and Lydia CHURCH to the Church estate so-called , said to have been left by Samuel CHURCH ,of Brecon ,Wales. In January 1880 he was appointed inspector of Annapolis and Digby Counties on the read justment of the inspeactoral districts during the time of the HOLMES - THOMPSON Administration As an inspector, Mr. MORSE had always been prompt and painstaking in the discharge of his duties and he enjoyed the confidence of the educational department at Halifax and the respect both of the teachers of his division and of the general public. He was the only inspector in the Province, who had never been a teacher, and he had held the office of inspector longer than any other similar offical. Mr. MORSE had also served as a member of Digby's town council. He is survived by one brother John MORSE of Nictaux West Annapolis County. A funeral service was held in Digby Monday evening conducted by Rev. C. W. ROBBINS . The remains were conveyed to Bridgetown, Tuesday , the funeral taking place on arrival of the express from Digby with interment in the Baptist Cemetery in that town.

1916 James Daley

A FORMER DIGBY MAN PASSES AWAY IN NEBRASKA [From the Merns ,Nebraska ,Postal Card] A wave of sadness passed over this community on Wednesday when the news was spread of the suden death of one of our best citizens , Jas. DALEY. Mr. DALEY had been working in the garden; and was called for dinner by Mrs DALEY. There was no response to the call and upon investigation he was found to be dead. James DALEY was born in Digby , Nova Scotia , May 8, 1840 . He was one of a large family , three sisters of whom are living. James DALEY was married to Miriam E. BUDD December 18, 1872 . To this union was born two sons , Ernest and Budd. Ernest passed away in December 1886 at the age of eleven years. Mr. DALEY moved from Nova Scotia to Villisca Iowa in September 1879. In the spring of 1880 in company with James WOOD he came to Custer county and filled a timber claim.He drove from Villisca four times and in the spring 1882 moved to his claim eight miles northwest of Merna.He arrived at what was to be his future home May 10th of the same year. He was the first postmaster at Dale ,established at his residence in 1883 . In the spring of 1903 he came to live in Merna where he has spent much time and labour beautifying his home as he was very fond of beautiful and fragant flowers. Mr. DALEY united with the Episcopal church in young manhood and was a temperance worker in the early days.Those were the times when the prohibition movement was not looked upon with favour, as at the present time.He continued to be on the side of prohibition all through the years.His manner of life has been upright. He has been a regular attendant at church and public school gatherings. The Divine summons came to him very suddenly May 10 1916 at his home in Merna Nebraska . He has filled out a well rounded life of 76 years and 2 days. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and one son and three grandchildren besides a host of friends. He was a considerate husband, a good father,and humble and unpretentious in his life. May rest be to his body and joy to his soul as he leaves his home here to dwell in the great Home beyond. The funeral services were held from M.E. Church Friday, conducted by Rev. J.W. FAIR , pastor of the church. This was one of the largest attended funerals ever held in Merna and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to the last resting place in the Merna Cemetery. [Mr. Daley mentioned above ,was a brother of Mrs Oscar DAKIN, Digby; Mrs Coleman VANTASSEL of Westville, Digby Co. and Mrs Olliver STARK of Culloden.]

MEMORIAL SERVICE Pte. Joseph Hilaire SAULNIER, 24, was the first soldier of Meteghan to give his life in the invasion field of France, Sept. 17th. He had been reared by his grandfather Leander H. COMEAU of St. Martin de Clare, Meteghan, who resides at present in Yarmouth. His parents, Mr. And Mrs. Paul H. SAULNIER (Helen COMEAU) survive, and six sisters; Marguerite, Pauline, Marie, Therese, Helen and Alice, all living in Quincy, Mass.; also his grandmother Mrs. Hilaire P. SAULNIER of St. Alphonse de Clare. A Memorial Service with High Mass of Requiem, was held on Wednesday morning, Oct. 4th at 9 o'clock in Stella Maris Church by the pastor Right Rev. Mgr. J. E. BOURNEUF, D.P., F.V., assisted by Joseph J. ROBICHAUD, Cross bearer; Delbert THIBEDEAU, Censor bearer; Robert ROBICHAUD and Augustin GAUDET, Acolytes. Mrs. Joseph S. LEBLANC was at the organ, Arthur ROBICHAUD directed the choir. Rev. A. COMEAU of West Caledonia, Desire COMEAU and Aug. F. HACHE were soloists. The church was filled to capacity.

DEATH OF MRS OLIVE STARK Death of Mrs Olive STARK widow of the late Nathan STARK died at her home in Culloden last Tues. morning ar aged 69 years and six months. The deceased had been ill for sometime and the end was therefore not unexpected.She was a member of the Methodist Church and had a large circle of friends and was highly respected by all who knew her. She leaves four sons, Fulton, Lee, Burton, and Oscar all of Culloden and two daughters, Mrs Frank LENT of Port Mouton and Mrs Arch HANDSPIKER of Mt. Pleasant . She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs Oscar DAKIN of Digby and Mrs Coleman VAN TASSELL of Westville Digby Co. The funeral took place from her home Wed. afternoon with interment in the Forest Hill Cemetery , Digby . Service in the Culloden Methodist Church was conducted by Rev. C.W. ROBBINS , pastor of the Digby Baptist Church and at the grave by Rev. Wm. DRIFFIELD , rector of Holy Trinity Church . The pallbearers were the four sons. There was a large number of floral tributes.

1917 Mrs James Daley

Death of a Digby Lady From the Merna Postal card Jan. 12 A wave of sadness passed over this community on Friday when the sad news was spread of the death of Mrs James DALEY. Mrs DALEY was stricken with bronchial pneumonia last Sunday afternoon and only lived five days. Mrs DALEY was born in Digby , Nova Scotia , May 28, 1848 and died Jan. 5 1917 age 67 years, 7 months and 8 days. Mrs DALEY was married to James DALEY December 18 1872 . To this union was born two sons , Ernest and Budd. Ernest passed away in December 1886 at the age of eleven years. They took from a home Ray HORTON and raised him. She moved with her husband from Nova Scotia to Villisca Iowa in September 1879 . In company with her sister , Mrs James WOOD and family moved to Custer County , in the spring of 1882 , where she has resided ever since. Mrs DALEY united with the Presbyterian Church in young woman-hood and since moving to Mernia she has been a regular attendant of the Methodist Church when able. She leaves to mourn her loss, one son G. K.N. Budd who resides in Nova Scotia besides a host of friends. Her husband James DALEY , preceeded her on May 10 1916. She lived a good Christain life and is now with her loved ones who have gone on before. The funeral was held at the M. E. Church which was completely filled with sorrowing friends. The services were conducted by Rev. J.W. BLAIR , assisted by Rev. J.W. ROLLINGS of the U.B. Church. Interment in Merna Cemetery.

DIED AT SOUTHVILLE - Many will learn with regret of the death of Asa N. PORTER which occurred Wednesday morning, July 4, 1917 at the age of 73 years. He had not been in good health for some time, but death came suddenly. He leaves to mourn the loss, a wife, and one son William C. of Sea Brook, and two brothers, Adelbert of Havelock, David of Southville, and two sisters, Mrs. Charlotte MARSHALL of Bear River and Augusta of Boston. The funeral was held Friday forenoon with internment in the Southville cemetery.

1917 Pte. B.Murray Sabean

DIED IN HOSPITAL Mr. and Mrs Benjamin SABEAN , of South Range , received the sad tidings Oct, 1st of the death of their son B. Murray SABEAN who died in England Sept.29th. Pte. SABEAN enlisted for active service , March 1916.His battalion being the 219 then stationed at Weymouth NS. After arriving in England, he was transferredto the 85th. Battalion and shortly after that went to France. He was wounded in the battle of Vimy Ridge and had been confined to the hospital ever since.He had written several times saying he was improving, but the last letter received stated he was with Trench Fever.Pte. Sabean was a bright , cheerful young man, aged twenty years, having spent his twentieth birthday in the trenches. He is survived by a grief -stricken father and mother and four brothers,Joseph, Clarence, Reginald of South Range and Isaiah in Washington USA.Also four sisters Mrs Alex PORTER, Mrs Hantford MARSHALL, and Mrs Forrest HILL all of South Range and Mrs Harry LEWIS of Danvers;NS. His many friends keenly regret his loss and much sympathy is felt for the family in their sad behreavement.

1917 Letita Maria Campbell

DEATH AT BEAR RIVER The death of Letita Maria CAMPBELL , wife of the late Alexander CAMPBELL of Bear River occured at the home of Mansford CAMPBELL Oct.30th 1917 after only a few days illness. Although at the advanced age of 95 years, she was in possession of all her facilties and was bright and cheerful to the last. She was a member of St. John's Espiscopal Church . She leaves to mourn her loss seven children, twenty-six grand children and forty great-grand-children.The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Wm. DRIFFIELD of Digby. Interment in St. John 's cemetery of that place.

1917 Jannie Mullen

Death At Hillsdale The death occured on Oct.23 of Jennie , the beloved daughter of Mr. and Chalton MULLEN at the age of 21 years and 10 months. She leaves besides her sorrowing parents three brothers Harold, Herbert and Clarence at home and two half sisters Mrs Joseph YOUNG of Hillddale and Mrs James FORD of New Tusket besides a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Funeral service was conducted by Rev. BRIGGS , Pastor of Reformed Church, New Tusket of which the deceased was a member. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones.

A telephone message received here late Thursday afternoon announced the death at Brighton of Mr. Charles S. VANBLARCOM at the age of 63 years. He is survived by his widow , two daughters, May of North Sydney, Reta at home , one son Benjamin of Lethbridge Alberta. one sister Mrs Boyd MCNEIL of Weymouth and five brothers , Hiram, of Brighton,Hanford of Barton, Wayland , New Jersey; Wade of Calgary and Wm. E. VANBLARCOM of Digby. The Courier extends sincere sympathy to the beheaved family.

Digby Courier Friday Nov.9 1917 DEATH OF D. W. HANDSPIKER The death took place at Broad Cove , on Wednesday , Nov. 7th. of Mr. D. W. Handspiker in the 75th year of his age . He had been in ill health for several months. The deceased is survived by his wife , five sons , William , Wallie, Ernest, and Stewart , of Broad cove, Judson in the United States , and three daughters Mrs Middleton , Broad Cove, Mrs Rowe of Boston and Mrs Anderson of Glouster. The interment was in Broad Cove , Rev. W.I. Croft of Digby , conducting the service. Much sympathy is extended to the wife and family.

1917 Mrs Lozenzo Everett

DEATH OF MRS LORENZO EVERETT There passed peacefully away on the 30th of October at the V. G. Hospital, Halifax , Mrs Lorenzo EVERETT of Plympton. She had been ill for some time with ulcers of the stomach and was operated on successfully after which internal hemorrhage took place , causing her death . She is survived by a sorrowing husband and two children son and daughter both at home.Also three sisters , Mrs Lottie POTTER, Mrs Delbert TREFRY and Miss Georgetta MILBERRY ,in US.The funeral service on Sunday , held at her late home ,was conducted by Rev. H, BURGESS and largely attended . Mrs EVERETT was a daughter of the late Joseph MILBERRY and a member of the Plympton Methodist Church.

Digby Courier Friday 28 March 1919 MRS JOHN PETERS On Thursday evening there passed away another of Westport citizens , the beloved wife of John PETERS , of the Western Light Station. Mrs PETERS had been ailing some three or four years with an incurable disease. She was a great sufferer much of the time but she bore her suffering with great fortitude. She was 66 years of age and leaves to mourn their loss a husband,two sons Frank and Edward children of a former marriage[Capt. Edward COUSINS of Digby] and one son Dalton and two daughters Mrs Edwin ELLIS and Mrs D,Arcy SPINNEY who so tenderly cared for her mother . Mrs PETERS was blessed with having all her children with her through her last days of illness.The funeral, which was largely attended was held Sunday afternoon from the Christian Church of which the deceased was a valued member for years. Rev. J.W. Derby led the service , assisted by the Rev, Mr,. Calder.

Valentine T. HARDWICK On April 4th. after an illness of two days, Valentine Troop HARDWICK , postmaster at Bear River for the past forty-nine years passed peacefully to rest. He leaves a widow and one daughter Mrs Harold LOVITT of Philadelphia to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. With the passing of Mr. HARDWICK , Bear River loses her most popular citizen, one who ever emphasized in his daily living the white flower of a blameless life.The entire town is in mourning . Telegrams and letters of condolence have been received from many centres both in Canada and the United states . Besides the vacancy in the post office he will be greatly missed in the Methodist Church, of which he was a prominent and devoted memember.Mr. HARDWICK was seventy -four years of age.

MRS. ISABELLE THOMAS The death of Mrs. Isabelle THOMAS of Sandy cove took place last Friday at the residence of her daughter Mrs. Sarah J. DENTON , Little River. Mrs. THOMAS was the widow of the late Capt. Charles P. Thomas and had reached the advanced age of 84 years. Besides the daughter mentioned she leaves to mourn their loss three other daughters , Mrs. Mary DENTON of Little River, Mrs. Ada WARRINGTON, of Lynn MA and Mrs. Austin HAWKS of Palmer MA and two sons Charles of Palmer MA and Fred at home. The funeral took place last Sunday.

Digby Courier Friday 11 April 1919 CHARLES THIBIDEAU The death of a much respected resident of Meteghan Centre , Digby Co. in the person of Charles THIBIDEAU occurred at his home there on Saturday at the age of 47 years. The deceased had been ill for several months suffering from tubercular trouble .His condititon however was not considered alarming until two days previous to his passing away , when complications developed which owing to his weakened state, he could not withstand and the end came very rapidly. He had always been a resident of the locality and his many friends along the St. Mary's Bay Shore will deeply deplore his passing away. Mrs. THIBIDEAU pre- deceased him some time ago but he leaves three children to mourn their loss.

Digby Courier Friday 11 April 1919 MELBOURNE TITUS It is with great sorrow that Freeport has been called upon to mourn the loss of one of their sons , Pte. Melbourne TITUS,son of Mr. and Mrs Isaac TITUS , age 20 years. Deceased enlisted with the 219th. Highland Brigade ,crossing to England in August 1916. He crossed to France in January 1917 and did some gallant fighting . While there he contracted a heavy cold and was sent back to England. where he remained for a few months . He crossed to Halifax on one of the hospital ships and arrived home in May. 1918. He was sent to the Provincial Sanitorium at Kentville in November and remained there until his death which took place the 2nd. of April. Besides his sorrowing parents he leaves to mourn two brothers , Gordon [who is now overseas], Willard and one sister Evelyn . Great sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

Oscar ANDREWS Oscar ANDREWS died at his home in North Range last Thursday , at the age of 30 years, He leaves to mourn their loss a young widow and aged mother also four brothers and four sisters besides a host of friends .The brothers are Henry, in the United States ;Edward in the navy ; George at Outram Annapolis Co. NS ; Charles at home;the sisters are Mrs Annie GRAY, of Culloden ;Mrs Charles JEFFERSON ,Digby;Mrs James HEIGHT and Mrs William FOSTER at home. He had only been married six months , his bride being Miss BENT from Young's Cove , Annapolis Co.

Ambrose Churh , Yarmouth.
