Notes

"Henry Willis was representative for Gloucester County in the House of Burgesses 1718 and 1723, and for Spotsylvania County in 1740. He married three times to widowed cousins, Ann Alexander, widow of John Smith, Mildred Lewis, who had been widowed twice (first husband was a Howell, and the second was a Brown). After Mildred's death, he married a widow Gregory (who bad been born a Washington, and was a cousin of George Washington). A grandson of Col. Henry Willis said "he was a stout coarse man, perhaps I should have said blunt man, more likely to succeed with the latter than the former."

"When his second wife (Mildred) died, the widow Gregory wept immoderately upon hearing it. Someone remarked that it was strange she should grieve so much for a cousin, and she replied that the death of her relation was not the sole cause of her grief, though she loved her dearly, as they were cousins and bore the same name, but she knew that old Harry Willis would be down there to see her, and she did not know what to do with him. The sequel showed she knew the man: in "a little month" the old cock sat himself down before her door, and cornmenced a regular siege; she held out for some time, but was compelled finally to capitulate, so that less than two months after the death of his second wife, Mildred Brown, he married Mildred (Washington) Gregory."

"Henry Willis and his second wife, Mildred (Lewis) Brown, had a son, John (1728-1780). John was killed by Tories along with fourteen other men, including William Brown. This first son, John, should NOT be confused with a second son, also named John, by Henry's third wife. The elder brother, John, moved from Virginia to South Carolina in 1750, and married a lady known in family history, as "the Widow Vardell." This is, with little doubt, Winnefred Watson Vardell (1736-1780?), daughter of William Watson."
