Capt. Paschal HICKMAN

ABT 1780 - 1813

ID Number: I103616

  • TITLE: Capt.
  • RESIDENCE: VA and Franklin Co. KY
  • BIRTH: ABT 1780, Virginia
  • DEATH: 1813, Killed by Indians in Battle of the River Raisin, Kentucky
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3748]
Father: William HICKMAN
Mother: Porter BIBB

Notes

Paschal died 1813 at 30 years of age. He married Elizabeth Hall, March 11, 1797.

"Capt. Paschal Hickman, in honor of whom Hickman County, Kentucky was named, was a native of Virginia, emigrating to Kentucky when a very young boy with his father, the Rev. William Hickman and settled in Franklin County. He served in most of the campaigns against the Indians and was distinguished for his activity, efficiency and bravery. In 1812, he was commissioned a captain, raised a volunteer company and joined Col. John Allen, who commanded the first regiment of Kentucky Riflemen. He was in the memorable Battle of the River Raisin where he was severly wounded and, like many kindred Kentucky spirits, was inhumanly butchered in cold blood by the savage allies of Britannic Majesty." (From the STARR PAPERS "Miscellaneous Notes on Family Matters")

In the Barons war 1264-67 he defeated the Barons at Evesham (1265) as King he is noted for encouraging Parliamentary institutions at the expense of feudalism and for subduing Wales on which he imposed the English system of administration. "Edward was the oldest surviving son of Henry III and Eleanor of Provence. Edward married Eleanor of Castille in 1254 to whom he had sixteen children, seven of which survived to adulthood, before her death. As part of a peace settlement, Edward married Margaret, sister of Philip IV of France, with whom he had another three children.

Edward expanded the Parliament to include both Lords and Commons. Discovering that revenues from feudal claims were inadequate, Edward found that calling a national Parliament was a good form of revenue gaining. Edward expanded the courts including the King's Bench, Common Pleas, Exchequer, and the Chancery Court, and established Conservators of the Peace.

Unification of the Island was Edward's main goal. He made steps toward this with a campaign against Llywelyn ap Gruffydd of Wales. Llwelyn died in 1282, and in 1301, Edward's eldest son, Edward II was named Prince of Wales, the title held by all male heirs to the throne to this day. When Margaret, Maid of Norway, died in 1290, there was no clear successor to the crown of Scotland. Edward was asked to arbitrate between thirteen different claims to the throne.

His first choice, John Baliol, was unpopular; his second, William Wallace rebelled against England until his capture and execution in 1305. Robert Bruce seized the Scottish throne in 1306 and remained a thorn in the side of Edward II. Edward I died on his way to another Scottish campaign in 1307. Edward is buried in a plain stone tomb in Westminster Abbey. He wished to be buried without a lid on his coffin so that his troops could still see him as they left for battle."

"The civil war in 1264. Edward, Henry's eldest son, led the king's forces with the opposition commanded by Simon de Montfort, Henry's brother-in-law. At the Battle of Lewes, in Sussex, de Montfort defeated Edward and captured both king and son - and found himself in control of the government.

Simon de Montfort held absolute power after subduing Henry but was a champion of reform. The nobility supported him because of his royal ties and belief in the Provisions of Oxford. De Montfort, with two close associates, selected a council of nine (whose function was similar to the earlier council of fifteen) and ruled in the king's name. De Montfort recognized the need to gain the backing of smaller landowners and prosperous townsfolk: in 1264, he summoned knights from each shire in addition to the normal high churchmen and nobility to an early pre-Parliament, and in 1265 invited burgesses from selected towns. Although Parliament as an institution was yet to be formalized, the latter session was a precursor to both the elements of Parliament: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Later in 1265, de Montfort lost the support of one of the most powerful barons, the Earl of Gloucester, and Edward also managed to escape. The two gathered an army and defeated de Montfort at the Battle of Evasham, Worcestershire. de Montfort was slain and Henry was released; Henry resumed control of the throne but, for the remainder of his reign, Edward exercised the real power of the throne in his father's stead. The old king, after a long reign of fifty-six years, died in 1272. Although a failure as a politician and soldier, his reign was significant for defining the English monarchical position until the end of the fifteenth century: kingship limited by law."
***********
"Edward I (1239-1307), king of England (1272-1307). He was born in Westminster, the eldest son of King Henry III. Following his father's death in 1272, Edward was recognized as king by the English barons. In the first years of his reign, he suppressed corruption in the administration of justice, restricted the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical courts to church affairs, and eliminated the papacy's overlordship over England.

The major conflict in Edward's reign was an ongoing conflict with the people of Scotland. In agreeing to arbitrate among the claimants to the Scottish throne, Edward, in 1291, had required that he be recognized as overlord of Scotland. The Scots later repudiated him, and Edward invaded and conquered Scotland in 1296, declaring himself king of the realm. In 1298 he again invaded Scotland to suppress the revolt led by Sir William Wallace. However, he failed to crush Scottish opposition. In 1303 he again undertook the conquest of Scotland. Wallace was captured and executed in 1305, but a new revolt broke out, and Robert Bruce became king of Scotland. In 1307 Edward died while traveling to fight the Scots again. (2)"

per http://www.clan.com/history/features/stirlingbridge/.
"At Perth, he commanded that the sacred Stone of Scone (pronounced Skoon) -- upon which generations of Scots Kings had been crowned -- be removed and delivered to Westminster Abbey. Also stolen were all of Scotlands historical records (which have never been recovered) and the Holy Rod of St. Margaret. Ignoring the Bruce claim, Edward appointed an English viceroy over the Scots. This was far from the end of the conflict between the two countries, however. In the spring of 1297 the whole of Scotland, with the possible exception of Lothian (long an Anglo-Saxon area) was in a state of armed insurrection. At Lanark a complete garrison of English troops were massacred by troops loyal to what is described as a giant of a man named William Wallace, son of a minor local landowner and knight from Ellersie, near Paisley. He quickly became a symbol of Scottish resistance to the English occupation of Scotland."
