"Mary Pendleton (1717-1803), sister to the famous Judge Edmund
Pendleton (1721-1803 and Nathaniel Pendleton (1715-1793),
married, in 1730, James Gaines (1710-1786), brother to Henry
Gaines who married her sister, Isabella Pendleton. They were the
children of Henry Pendleton (1683-1721) and his wife, Mary
Taylor (1688-1770) and granddaughters of Philip Pendleton, the
Immigrant, and his wife, Isabella Hurt. Philip Pendleton and his
older brother, Nathaniel, came to Virginia In 1674; they were
the sons of Henry Pendleton, Jr. (1614-1682) of Norwich, by his
second wife, Elizabeth ----------- , who survived him and was
his administratrix. He died intestate. Thomas and James Gaines,
sons of Henry and Isabella (Pendleton) Gaines, married Susannah
and Elizabeth Strother, daughters of Francis and Susannah
(Dabney) Strother. Mary died testate in Madison Co, VA, in
1803."
Mary was 14 years of age when she married.
In the Will of Mary (Pendleton) Gaines, dated 7 Mar 1803 was
probated 25 Mar
1803 (Will Bk C, P. 392, Madison Co., VA) she willed her estate
to her
surviving children: Henry, Richard, Edmund, Joseph, Francis,
Thomas, Mary
Gaines Herndon, Sarah Gaines Broadus.
I, Mary Gaines, of the county of Madison and State of VA being
of sound mind
and disposing memory, I do make my last will and testament in
manner and form
following that is to say 1st, I desire that my debts and funeral
expenses be
paid. 2nd, all moneys due to be collected by Executor and be
eaqually divided
among my surviving shildren to wit Henry, Richard, Edmund,
Joseph, Francis, Mary
Gaines Herndon, and Sarah Gaines Broaddus. 3rd, and lastly, I
appoint my son
Edmund Gaines my Executor to this my last will and testament
heregy making all
other former wills by me heretofore invalid. Made in wit in
witness whereof I
have hereunto let my hand and affexed my seal the seventh day of
March One
Thousand Eight Hundred and Three. Mary X(her mark) Gaines.
