Elizabeth de Burgh was much involved with Walsingham, bringing
the Franciscans there in 1347, and leaving money to completion
of the Priory church when she died in 1360. In 1349 a Thomas de
Clare was Prior at Walsingham.
It's possible there was some relationship between Thomas and
Elizabeth's family, but it's equally possible that he simply
came from Clare. Either way, he would have been a likely choice
for prior there as she undoubtedly had some influence in the
process of selection. He could have been a bastard half-brother
born during the years of collapse in her father's first marriage
(i.e., sometime before he married Elizabeth's mother, a daughter
of Edward I, in 1290), or an illegitimate son of her only
brother who fell at Bannockburn in 1314, aged 23. But I don't
think there's any proof of his parentage. At last report,
Elizabeth Underhill's biography of Elizabeth de Burgh was
scheduled for publication by St Martin's press in October 1999.
