"The record is unclear as to the exact date of Spencer BOBO's
birth. In June of 1733 he appears at court in Caroline County,
Virginia. It can be assumed that he would have been at least 21
years old, placing his birth in or before 1712; however, owing
to his father's death between 1703 and 1704, a closer
approximation would be circa 1703. Spencer BOBO's name is
mentioned six times in the records of Caroline and Orange
Counties between June of 1733 and November of 1737. However, it
is not until December of 1737 that his wife's name (Jane)
appears in the records. There is no known record of the marriage
of Spencer BOBO and Jane, however, it is generally accepted that
their first child was born circa 1726. Spencer BOBO and his wife
Jane are presumed to be the parents of the following children:
Gabirel born circa 1726, Mary Elizabeth born circa 1729, Absalom
born circa 1730, Sampson born circa 1735, Lewis born circa 1736,
and Spencer, Jr. born circa 1739.
Jane BOBO appears to have died prior to September of 1749, as
Spencer's wife's name is shown then as Mary.
Spencer BOBO continues to be active (appearing thirty-four times
between December of 1737 and January of 1769) in the court
minutes and deed books of Orange, Caroline, and Culpepper
Counties. From the extant record it appears that Spencer BOBO
died between January of 1769 and August of 1772, for on 21
August 1772, Absalom BOBO proves a bond between his father
Spencer BOBO and William SPARKS dated 10 January of 1752.
From an examination of the Granville County, North Carolina,
patent books, court minutes, and deed books, and those of nearby
Bute County, North Carolina, it appears that the families of
Lewis and Sampson BOBO had begun their migration from Virginia
to South Carolina prior to 1756. The evidence also indicates
that Lewis and Sampson BOBO remained in North Carolina until
they received land grants from King George III, in 1770 and 1773
respectively."
Due to boundry changes Orange/Culpeper and Caroline counties
Bobo's lived in the same area as counties changed."
Some researchers show his name as Francis Spencer Bobo b. 1710
in Fourney, France; I have not researched and have no proof, but
I wonder how if Elizabeth Spence is the mother he could have
been born in France.
"The name Bobo was origionally Beaubeaux, later it was spelled
Bobeaux.
The family were early followers of Calvin, called Huguenots or
French Protestants. They resided in the vicinity of Rochelle,
France.
When the persecution of the Huguenots reached its height at the
massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve., the family had to flee for
their lives. Some fled to England, some to Switzerland, as the
two nearest Protestant countries.
Later in the eighteenth century some settled in and around
Charleston and Goose Creek, S.C. Soon the name became to be
spelled just as it was pronounced, as were many of the French
names of those who came to colonial Americia.
An elderly cousin who did research on the Bobo name found in an
encyclopedia where the son of Peter Bobo of France was elevated
to the Popeship of Rome in 1033. A man from Greece said the name
Bobo is common in Greece, spelled Bobo.
Spencer Bobo, born in France, came to........."
