MARTIN posted by Frances Reiter on Wednesday, August 20, 1997

Looking for a listing of ferry boat owners/operators during 1790-1800s for Ohio River area - does not have to be just Ohio River. Family legend says our MARTIN family owned/ran ferryboat business during early days of Ohio Territory, but have not found a connection I can prove to the Absolem Martin family. I can't prove Jesse Martin's parents because I find 3 Jesse Martins, all related, all about same age, all living in Jefferson, Belmont & Harrison Co. areas during this time frame. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

BECKETT posted by Bill Beckett on Thursday, August 21, 1997

BECKETT - I am collecting and am willing to share information about BECKETT families in the Ohio counties of Belmont, Jefferson, Noble, Guernsey, Monroe and Washington. I am a descendant of John Beckett (~1770 to 1850) of Virginia who moved with his family to Ohio in about 1811. They first settled in Warren Township, Jefferson County, but moved to Belmont County before 1820 and lived in Goshen Township until about 1832, when they moved to Green Township, Monroe County. I am trying to collect together as much information as I can about both their descendants and ancestors. I have collected a lot of information about them and other Beckett families, which I am willing to share. [21 Aug 1997]

Jefferson County, Ohio query: Researching KARDOS, my maiden name. Was given old photos by a family member; one is inscribed "Jan KARDOS, born 1873, died 10 May 1910, Mingo Junction, OH". My educated guess is that John was the brother, or perhaps a cousin, of my greatgrandfather Paul Kardos, 1863- 1900, who came from Slovakia to Taylor, Lackawanna Co., PA. Wish correspondence from any KARDOS individuals or researchers of same living in Jeff. Co., happy to share info I have so far.

STEELE posted by Anita M. Steele on Wednesday, August 27, 1997

I am researching STEELE along the Ohio River. I think he lived in Warrenton, Jefferson County, OH, for several years (prob. ca. 1820) before settling in Washington County, PA, before 1830, on the PA/WV border. He died there before 1850. I don't know whether he came out of PA or VA. If you are researching this name, please contact me directly, and I'll share connections. Thanks.
