Oct 4 1787 (Records of Hanover County) - Eliz'b X Alvis receipt
for Payment by Wm Thomas 1/3 of tract of land sold by her late
husband David Alvis of Hanover to Moses Harris.
Stanley and Allied Families Vol I states that Elizabeth Stanley
Beaver was born 29 March 1718. She was the 2nd of 2 known
children of Thomas Stanley Jr. and Elizabeth Maddox, b. 1693, d.
1724. Thomas Jr. then married Elizabeth Crew and had 10 more
children. No children for Elizabeth Stanley Beaver are listed.
Thanks to Bob Strong for this excellent research. An Elizabeth
Stanley is reported in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker
Genealogy, Vol VI, VA to have been born 29 Mar 1719, dau of
Thomas Stanley, Jr and his first unidentified, wife. This data
prob came from the Henrico (formerly White Oak Swamp) Monthly
Meeting Minutes, as Monthly Meeting Minutes at Cedar Creek did
not begin until abt 1739.
Donald W. Stanley, unpublished research in 1971 "Our Stanley
Ancestors". desc of Strangeman Stanley. copyright Kenneth W.

Celeste Terrell Barnhill of Miami, Florida in (c) 1931, with the
assistance of George Tatum Stanley of Huntington Park,
California, and Clayton V. Stanley of Des Moines, Iowa,
privately published a genealogy entitled VIRGINIA QUAKER
STANLEYS AND DESCENDANTS. A copy of this manuscript was
deposited with the Virginia Historical Society, Richmond, VA;
the manuscript was microfilmed and is available through the LDS
Family History Centers.
Barnhill, Stanley, & Stanley reported that Elizabeth Stanley was
a daughter of John Stanley, the eldest, and his first,
unidentified wife, and that Elizabeth, whose date of birth and
marriage were unknown, married a Mr. "Olvis".
Barnhill, Stanley, and Stanley reported that Elizabeth Stanley,
daughter of Thomas Stanley, Jr., and Elizabeth Maddox, was born
3-29-1718 [about 29 JUN 1718], and that she married a Mr.
Beaver, date of marriage not reported.
Unfortunately Barnhill, Stanley, & Stanley did not provide
detailed documentation for their genealogy. There are a number
of data that I have been unable to confirm as yet.
1. I cannot confirm that the first wife of John Stanley, the
eldest, was Alice Ballard, as has been reported on the STANLEY
Mail List.
2. I cannot find a marriage record for Elizabeth Stanley
(Alvis).
3. I cannot find a marriage record for Elizabeth Stanley
(Beaver).
Cedar Creek MM minutes start JAN 1740. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Stanley
signed a marriage certificate that month. The first reference
to a (Miss?) Elizabeth Stanley in Hinshaw's abstracts of minutes
was on 12 JUL 1755 when Elizabeth Stanley was condemned for her
behavior concerning her sister's marriage. Was this a
reference to the marriage before 9 MAY 1754 of Anne Stanley,
daughter of John Stanley, the eldest, to a Mr. Strong? If so,
then Elizabeth was a daughter of John Stanley. Elizabeth was
apparently still unmarried in JUL 1755. In October 1755,
Elizabeth Stanley, "Jr." (the younger of two in the congregation
or in the county) signed the Womens MM book. [This was "a
pledge of allegiance" to the Society of Friends.]
If the two Elizabeths were Quakers who married out of unity,
then there should be dismissals recorded for Mrs. Beaver about
1730s or 1740s in the Henrico MM minutes, and for Mrs. Alvis
about 1750s or 1760s, probably in the Cedar Creek MM minutes.
There is a big gap in the Quaker records of the Stanley family.
There are no references to Stanleys from 1708, when Thomas
Stanley, the eldest, was dismissed, until 1722 when the Cedar
Creek Meeting was recognized.
But both Elizabeths should have married after 1722.
The first reference to an Elizabeth Stanley in the Henrico MM
minutes, as abstracted by Hinshaw, was to Elizabeth Crew
Stanley, (second) wife of Thomas Stanley, Jr. They were married
before 1726, 10, 3 (before 3 JAN 1727, New Style), per Hinshaw's
abstract of the announcement of their wedding. Next came the
wedding of James Stanley, Jr., to Elizabeth Ellyson at the Black
Creek MH in New Kent Co., VA, on 1754, 12, 11 (or thereabout).

Hi, Josephine
Stanley & Allied Families, Vol I (1996) lists Elizabeth as the
daughter of John Stanley and says she married Alvis or Olvis:
"Elizabeth (Stanley) Alvis or Olvis, born Hanover Co., VA. mcd
--Alvis, perhaps Forrester, John or George Alvis. The Stanley
Alvis and George Alvis in Hanover Co., VA, 1787 census, may have
