Oct 4 1787 (Records of Hanover County) - Eliz'b X Alvis receipt
for Payment by Wm Thomas 1/3 of tract of land sold by her late
husband David Alvis of Hanover to Moses Harris.
David Alvis named a son Stanley. See Elizabeth Stanley, dau of
John, The Eldest.
Processioning records indicate that George Alves owned land in
the same general vicinity as land owned by John Stanley, The
Eldest. For ex: George Alves was in the same processioning
precinct with Cecelia Anderson who owned land adjacent to one of
John Stanley's tracts. (Anderson, Alvin L. Ph.D. "Stanley &
Allied Familis, Vol 1, aft 1987)
David Alvis was enumerated on the 1778 personal property tax
list for Goochland County as a neighbor of John Strong and
Nathan Strong. Anne Stanley Strong, dau of John Stanley, the
eldest, moved into this neighborhood by 1781.
The 1782 tax list records Ashly Alvis, Shadrack Alvis, Elijah
Alvis, and David Alvis in this neighborhood. By 1800, the
Strongs were in John Underwood's tax precinct and Harris and
Elijah Alvis were in Archibald Pleasant's tax precinct.

Mother: Alice Thornton TAYLOR |
"In 1811 or '12, all of the children of Anthony and Kezia
Winston, excepting the two youngest (who remained with their
parents in Tennessee,) removed to that locality of Mississippi
Territory, which now constitutes Madison County, Alabama.
"In 1813, when the war with the Creek nation commenced, a family
council was held in Madison County, to determine which one of
the seven brothers, and brothers-in-law should be selected to
remain and protect all the families," whilst the other six
"went to the war". "William Winston was selected on account of
his firmness and prudence to protect the young families." The
wives as well as their husbands were in the Council. "John
Jones Winston was a Captain and his eldest brother, Anthony, a
Lieutenant in his company --- the other five served in the
ranks." General Jackson "was the personal friend of all these
young men," and bore cheerful testimony to the gallantry of
each."
Capt. Anthony Winston, of Hanover, Virginia, a member of the
Virginia convention of 1775, and a gallant captain in the
Revolutionary Army, lies buried in the old Winston family
burying ground just out of Sheffield, Alabama. Vol. xiii,
Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage book, states that
Anthony Winston was born in Hanover County, Virginia, in 1750,
Married Keziah Jones and died in Alabama in 1828. He was a
delegate from Buckingham Co., Va. to the convention of 1775; he
afterwards served in the militia and rose to the rank of
captain. Brewer's Alabama says that he was a colonial officer of
1776 and the owner of the celebrated Portuguese giant, Peter
Francisco. Capt. Winston removed first to Tenn. and subsequently
settled in Madison Co., Al., about the year 1810. He was a man
of marked and elevated character! He died in 1828. He left seven
sons, Anthony, John J., William, Joel W., Isaac, Edmund and
Thomas J., and two daughters, Mrs John Pettus (Alice Thornton)
and Mrs Jesse Jones. Capt Winston was nearly related to Patrick
Henry (a first cousin) and distinction is hereditary in the
Winston family. He has many honored descendents; one of his
grandsons was Governor John Anthony Winston of Sumter, the first
native born governor of Alabama! Another Grandson is General
Edmund Winston Pettus, now senator in the United States
Congress. Another distinguished grandson was the brother of Gen.
Pettus, Governor John J. Pettus, the Governor of Mississippi.
Other decendents of Capt. Anthony Winston are scattered all over
the Southwest, filling honorable positions with credit.
