Notes

Family Bible - shows bd as 10 Nov 1796, John came to Pike Co. MS from Fairfield Dist. SC in 1817 with two brothers Thomas and William.

John Ellzey and William Sibley, his brother in law, assisted by a contractor Thomas Thompkins, built the first jail in Holmesville, MS. Thompkins was the first person to be locked up in the jail for committing a breach of the peace. In July 1996, the building on the site appears to be the original building now used as a community center.

Reel MCE-4, McComb Library: "8 Dec 1904 - Memorial - Three Ellzey Brothers came from Greenwell District to Pike Co. in 1818. Thomas, John, and William. Thomas was father of Hon. Ross A. and Wesley and Rankin near Holmesville. John was father of Benjamin Franklin. In the early 1850's on Magees Creek near China Grove, B F married Betsie Holmes, daughter of Benjamin Homles, sister of Captain John Holmes."

Ref: lies a Daniel as a child.

I have been doing Ellzey Family research and ran across your page. John Shaffer Ellzey Sr. in your database is my G-G-G-Grandfather. Love your site. I found a lot about the Coneys that I did not know before. If you check my home page, I have also posted a genealogy database.

Notes

"In a statement written by Thurlow Gates Gregory: This Thomas Gregory's son, Captain "Big John" Gregory of "Rockwood" was a commissioned officer in the war of 1812. He became a Justice of the Chesterfield Court in which capacity he served for many years. He was both clear-headed and upright. The Chesterfield County Court records show that Captain "Big John" Gregory was often called upon to be arbitrator. He was a successful large-scale farmer of his one-thousand acre plantation. (possibly known as "Gathwright's" or "Gathmonths")."
