Mildred Jones (Wife) Marriage: 1700 in VA

"Is is likely that John Lillard came over from France with his brother Benjamin in about 1685 when he was about 17 years old and Benjamin was 15. During the time following revocation of the Edict of Nantes, Huguenots were being persecuted and it was not uncommon for children to be taken from their parents. As Jean's parents were fairly well to do they may have sent the brothers to America to prevent them from being taken in France. This is speculation, but is a best guess based on the political situation at the time. The older brother remained in France, having already reached the age of majority, and took over the family business.
It is speculated that he entered America at Fredricsburg and settled along the James river. He married Mildred Jones in about 1700 and they had the children listed above, perhaps some daughters, and possibly some others who died in infancy. At some point he anglicised his name to John.
Mildred died about 1720 and John & Benjamin (his son) moved north to Prince William Co, VA near present day Manassas. Here John married for a second time to a young widow, Mrs. Martha Littlejohn, who already had two children by her first marriage. By this marriage he had one child, Sarah Lillard."

"The exact date of the arrival of Jean (John) and BenjaminLillard in colonial Virginia is still an open question, butdoubtless it was as soon after the Revocation of the Edict ofNantes, as their father could plan and arrange for these twofugitives to be smuggled out of France. For a boatman itshould have been comparatively easy to take his sons down theLoire River to the open sea, thence to some port wherenegotiations might be completed for their transportation to theland of the Free. Just how this was accomplished and whathappened in the ensuing years we shall never know. Perchancesome older man - a Huguenot friend of Moise Lillard - wasfleeing to America, and these two boys were placed in his care, which may explain why the record of their voyage is stillunfound. Or they may have braced the dangers of the uncertainand lengthy voyage entirely alone, using another name. At allevents they were two courageous lads. There is a strong familytradition that John and Benjamin Lillard landed atFredericksburg, Virginia, having come up the Rappahannock River, and after a brief sojourn there, went south to near Richmond, where they took up lands on the James River. Unfortunately theCivil War caused the destruciton of practically all of therecords of this date in that region, and we are thereforeunable to determine just where on the James river they resided. That these two brother came from France and not from England, asmany claim, is set out very clearly in the following letterfrom John F. B. Lillard, of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, whopossessed more authentic data concerning the family than anyoneelse: "Proverty Flat, Harrodsburg, KY June 15, 1925 My dearCousin: Your letter was read to me as I a nearly blind andcannot see to read or write. In reply I would say that theLillards are French Huguenots, who came from France toVirginia. You will not find the name in either Hatton's Listnor the list of the Virginia Company, Ltd. which contains thenames of all the emigrants from Great Britain & Ireland from thelanding of John Smith up to the commencement of theRevolutionary War. Ask Mrs. Jennie Morton to let you see mypedigree from the one I sent her for the Kentucky StateHistorical Society. I have a mass of documents, papers, letters and newspaper clippings in regard to the family goingback to 1750. Yes, both the wills you refer to are recordedhere in the County Clerk's Office. I am sorry that I cannotaid you further in this matter. With best wishes I beg toremain Your Kinsman, John F. B. Lillard" This is furtherstrengthened by the Genealogical Record compiled by BenjaminLillard, of New York, in which he states: "John Lillard camefrom near Nantes, France, his family were farmers and cultivatedavineyard on the banks of the River Loire near that city andspelled the name Lillart. Outside of one family in Louisiana, all the Lillards in the U.S. are his descendants. He was aHuguenot." It is my belief, although I do not presume to statedefinitely, that John and Benjamin Lillard who came to Virginiafrom France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, werethe two youngest children of Moise (Moses) and Lillan (Balssa)Lillard, and that all of their other children had alreadyattained their majority or were married; that John and Benjaminwere still minors and were therefore in grave danger of beingtorn from their parents or perhaps massacred. John, the elder, was nearing manhood, presumably about seventeen or eighteenyears old in 1685, and Benjamin was a year or two younger.Aiding with the work in the vineyards, or on the boat line, haddoubtless made these boys sturdy, courageous and resourcefullads of good physique. If they came to America under theguidance of some older man, they may have lived with him untilJohn Lillard became of age, and then he took up his land on theJames River. At all events we know that htey resided there andthat one day Benjamin went out to into the water of the JamesRiver and stripped off his clothes to bathe, went into thewater and was drowned."
