Henrico MM minutes. Abstracts of record: Thomas Stanley, Charles
Fleming, Rice Hughes, Robert Hughes, Sarah Hughes, and Susannah
Fleming were among attendees at the marriage of Thomas Langford
and Martha West, daughter of Giles West, on 21 FEB 1700, "at the
home of the aforesaid people". Groom and bride were both from
New Kent County.
Others attending were Christipher Clark and Elizabeth Clark,
Michael Johnson, and Sarah Johnson.
"Marriage Certificate of Samuel Jordan of Nansemond County, VA,
and Elizabeth Fleming, daughter of Charles Fleming of New Kent
County, VA, at the home of William Porter, Jr., on 10 OCT 1703.
Among those who signed the marriage certificate were "Thomas
Handley" and "Anne Handley"."
John Atkinson was one of the two persons on the committee
appointed to counsel with Thomas Stanley.
John Stanley later claimed a headright for the transportation of
John Atkinson to the Virginia Colony. [There were often years
interventing between the time of transportation and the
submission of a headright claim.] Rec'd 18 acres on the west
branch of Cedar Creek, and beginning at Thomas Stanleys line for
the importation of one person, John Atkinson,18 Feb 1722.
The other person who was delegated responsibility for counseling
with Thomas Stanley was Robert Hughes of New Kent County, who
was credited in a 1782 land grant for transporting my ancestor,
John Strong, to the Virginia Colony. Rice Hughes was also
disciplined by the Quakers for intemperate use of alcohol.
Robert Hughes was also credited in his 1782 grant for the
transportation to Rice Hughes to the Virginia Colony.
"The Hughes, Flemings, and some of the other early Quakers
mentioned in the Curles [Henrico] Monthly Meeting minutes
resided on or near the Black Creek in New Kent County.
Robert Hughes abandoned his grant and subsequently Robert
Woodson and his relatives and partners claimed headrights for
transporting John Strong and Rice Hughes to Virginia. Robert
Woodson and John Woodson were also Qaukers and were obviously
acquainted with Robert Hughes. John Woodson married a daughter
of Charles Fleming and owned land in New Kent County.
Thomas Stanley, Sr. and his sons purchased land in the part of
New Kent Co. that was erected into Hanover Co., Nov. 1720.
Thomas Stanley, Sr. James and Thomas Stanley, Jr. for the
consideration of the importation of sixteen persons to dwell

Bogling, John Bitnal, and Peter Clark, one tract of land
containing 800 acres, lying and being on both sides of Cedar

Mother: Margaret HUPPMAN (HOFFMAN) |
Son of Leo B. Henry Swartz was a molder by trade, but farmed
principally. At one time he owned 50 acres of land, on a part
of which the Scranton courthouse now stands. After residing in
Dunmore, Blooming Grove (where he was engaged in lumbering),
Carbondale, Clarks Green and Milwaukee (where he operated and
iron foundry), he came to Falls Twp. He purchased a timbered
tract, put up a sawmill and lumbered for many years. He was
born in 1805 and died May 4, 1895. He was a member of the
Methodist Church. His wife was Miss Melissa Miller and bore
him: Leander, Mary, George, Oliver, Harriet R., Ellen A.,
William and Henry.
Wyoming County, PA In 1762 settlers from New England came to the
Wyoming Valley, but were driven out by the Indians. It was not
until after the Sullivan expedition in 1779 that families were
able to establish a permanent settlement in the Tunkhannock
area. In 1842, Wyoming County was created from part of Luzerne
County. The name "Wyoming" is derived from an Indian word
meaning "extensive meadows." With it's glistening streams,
gently rolling hills and tranquil valleys. Wyoming County is
undoubtedly one of Pennsylvania's most scenic counties. With a
history and heritage running as wide and deep as the Susquehanna
River that crosses it's pastoral fields and meadows, the Wyoming
County Historical Society was organized to make this information
available to the public.
Henry Swartz lived in Dunmore and purchased 200 acres in Dunmore
Corners, after he sold out, some went to Moscow and Elmhurst and
some stayed in Old Forge and Duryea section. (NE PA) Newton
c1842-4 Falls Twp, Lackawanna County. Southwest: Luzerne
County; Northwest: Wyoming County.
Lackawanna is the 67th and most recently formed PA county. It
came into existence on 17 Apr 1878 from part of Luzerne County.
Because geographical names change over the years, it's important
to realize that while we may think of an area as a particular
name, our ancestors may have called it something very different.
For example, some of my ancesters lived in what is now the
borough of Dunmore, Lackawanna, back when it was part of
Providence Township, Luzerne County. This is significant for
genealogists because it impacts where vital records may be
stored, how the area was indicated in the census and
directories, etc.
(Pittston is halfway between Wilkes Barre, Luzerne County and
Scranton Lackawanna County, PA) (Waverly is not far from the
Milwaukee section of Lackawanna County)

If you can find it in a library-"Wyo & Lackawanna Valleys"
Pub-1906--N.Y.-Chicago, Ill--a good story on Henry Swartz and
some of his ancesters, with some minor mistakes, such as the
year Henry was born-but the rest tells you a lot about Henry,
