William de Sto AWBREY may be the son of Reginald [Rinallt] and
Isobel/Isabel [de Clare] AWBREY, although I haven't seen any
worthwhile documentation of Reginald's marriage or known
children. I found the reference to Reginald at the following
URL:
http://www.mcsystems.net/users/bscull/oak05.htm and I'm also
interested in what anyone may know about the origins of the
[eventually modern surnames]
SCULL, WALBIEFFE [was apparently WALDEBIEFFE, according to that
SCULL web site] and GUNTER, from the same area(s) of Wales as
the AWBREYs."
FROM Alun Chesterfield of South Wales:
[email protected] 5/02 "The name Walbief is also
found as Walbyf, Walbeoffe, Walby, Walbieff etc. The oldest form
seems to be Waldebeuf, supposedly a Norman knight who assisted
Bernard de Neufmarche in his conquest of Brycheiniog
(Brecknock).
Could be from Oil-de-Boeuf; family Arms was a chevron with three
bulls.
Sir Peter Gunter was another supposed knight of Bernard's.
The name might possibly be of Germanic origin or derived from
French Gaunt d'Or ( family Arms was a chevron with three golden
clenched gauntlets).
The likelihood is that the marriage of Reginald de Sancto
Alberico (Awbrey) and Isabel de Clare is part of a pedigree
which was falsified in antiquity. The earliest documented
reference to the Awbreys in Brecon indicates that they were
burgesses of the town, and hence not of sufficiently high social
standing to intermarry with the de Clares, the most powerful
Norman family in south Wales at the time. The Awbreys claimed
that Reginald was granted the manor of Abercynrig and Slwch
(near Brecon) by Bernard de Neufmarche as a reward for his
assistance in the conquest of Brycheiniog ( AD 1093) but no such
manor is mentioned
in any early records; the Awbreys probably came in with the
second wave of Norman migrants after the country was subdued.
The foregoing facts are pointed out by the Rev. J. Jones-Davies,
one time curator of the Brecon Museum, in his booklet on the
history of Abercynrig published by the museum in 1972.
With reference to your mention of Owain Gethin of Glyntawe,
"Gethin" is not a surname, as surnames were not in use in native
Welsh society at this time; it is a descriptive epithet meaning
"swarthy". His true name was Owain ap Owain ap Caradog and he
was Lord of the district of Glyntawe, which is in the upper Tawe
valley close to the border between the counties of Brecon and
Glamorgan.
Owain Gethin was a 7th generation descendant of the last native
Prince of Brycheiniog, Bleddyn ap Maenyrch, who was killed
fighting the Norman army of Bernard de Neufmarche at the battle
of Caerbannog, near Brecon town, in Easter week of 1093.
Bleddyn's brother-in-law Rhys ap Tewdwr, king of Deheubarth
(south-west Wales), also fell in this battle.
Through his paternal grandmother, Bleddyn ap Maenyrch was
descended from the kings of Gwynedd (north Wales).
His descent can be traced in Bartrum back to Coel Godebog, a
tribal patriarch of Rheged ( now southern Scotland) about AD
370." I hope this is of some help.
A. Chesterfield, south Wales.

Hi Becky! I too have Henry Swartz who married Melissa Miller. I
have her whole family's names and a story about how her family
came over the mountains from CN to PA by oxcart. Don't have
anything on Henry although he was the Father of my great
grandmother. Henry and Melissa had 8 children, one of which was
a George W., born Sep.18.1837. These Swartz's were also
connected to Sicklers /Bedells / Hollenbacks. Please contact
