Part VII The Hoard Family
Generation 2. Pardee (Pardy) Hoard, Sr., was born about 1795, in New York; His wife, Ruth C Sprague, was born about 1793, in Rhode Island.
He and his family appear on the 1820 and 1830 Census for New York, Genesse County, Township of Sheldon, Pages 271 and 280 respectively. In 1820, it records 1 male and 1 female under 10, 1 male and 1 female 16-20, but indicates that either Ruth or Pardee was not a citizen at that time.
In 1830, it records 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-10, 1 male and 1 female 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 male and 1 female 30-40. In 1840, they appear on the Census for Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio, showing 1 male and 1 female 40-50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20
Children:
Generation 1. Pardee Hoard, Jr., son of Pardee Hoard I and Ruth C Sprague, was born about 1819, in New York.
He was married/1 to Corine Stevens. There is no other information about her.
He was married/2 on 4 January 1838, Geauga County Ohio to Roxana Stearns, born about 1821 in New York. They moved from Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio, to St. Joseph County, Michigan, between 1844 and 1850, and lived there at the time of the Civil War in 1861. The family is on the 1850 Census there.
Children:
Peter Noah Hoard, son of Pardee Hoard II and Roxana Stearns, was born 1 April 1844, in Geauga, Thompson County, Ohio. All the family records give the middle name of Noah, but his death certificate gives the name as Nathaniel. Sometime before 1855 he moved with his parents to St. Joseph County, Michigan.
Peter was married in 1867, in Trowbridge, Allegan County, Michigan, to Ellen St. Germaine, was born 16 March 1844, in Buffalo, New York, daughter of Joseph St. Germaine, and Lorene McGraw. (See St. Germaine Family)
They were on the 1880 Federal Census at Trowbridge, Allegan County, Michigan (Family History Library Film 125460, page 389C)
Peters brother, Henry was married in Missouri, and had settled in Anthony, Harper County, Kansas, in 1879. His brother, Major, went from Michigan, to Kingsdown, Ford County, Kansas in 1884, with a mule team, while his wife, Minnie, stayed with her parents in Iowa. When he established a claim, he brought her out.
In the fall of 1885, Peters family consisted of a girl 18, a girl 11, boy 8, a boy 3, and a new baby. He packed them in a covered wagon, and made the trek to Anthony, Kansas, arriving there in October. They stayed there until December, either to rest, or look around for a place to settle. It was a poor time of year to be moving, but he packed up again, and went on to Ford County, homesteading about 1 1/2 miles NW of Kingsdown, next to his brother, Major. It was the NE quarter of Sect.12 T29 range, Cert.#1303 of the Osage Trust Land.
They built a large well-made soddy, saw their oldest daughter married, had another child, and saw their second daughter married, at 16, to an up and coming 30 year old neighbor. In 1894, they had a traveling photographer take their family portrait, in front of the sod house. It shows Peter wearing a beard, a pretty lady who is Ellen, 3 little boys, their daughter Lorene and husband, their daughter Cora, her husband, and her two little girls; and to the side, a young man holding two horses. All were dressed up in their Sunday best. There was once a one-room schoolhouse, called the Hoard School, no doubt built on the property of someone in the clan. In 1891, he lost the land that he had homesteaded, because he could not pay the taxes on it, an amount of $526.00.
Ellen died in 18 April 1894. Peter bought a cemetery plot of eight in Bucklin, Kansas, and Ellen was buried here. Here, the record is a little confusing. We know that, after Ellens death, the oldest daughter, Lorene, who had no children of her own, took the younger boys to raise. Which evidently left Peter footloose and fancy-free.
When the Aunts were still living, they told me, that Grandpa had married again, to a woman named Mattie Youngblood, and moved out west, and had another family. Out west was western Kansas, where there used to be a little town called Dermott, near present day Hugoton, and Copeland, in Stevens County, and it isnt all that far away. He did marry a woman named Mattie Youngblood, the marriage is recorded on 26 April 1896 in Dodge City, Kansas, but, the Ford County Census, lists two Mattie Youngbloods living in Dodge City. And he did have had another family, but not with Mattie. He was married again in 1898, in Topeka, Kansas, to Flora Amelia Ingold, born 8 February 1862, in Iowa. He lived in Topeka awhile, had two sons, and then moved to western Kansas. In November 1909, he moved his second family to Kingsdown. In 1917, he was living in Dermott. This was the same time period, that his son Raymond and family were living in Dermott.
Peter became ill with Brights disease, and spent his last days in the home of his son Ben, when he was living near Bloom, Kansas, a little to the west of Kingsdown. He died there 11 August 1922, age 78, and the funeral was held at the house. Bert Smith, a grandson, stayed up with him all night before the funeral, as was the custom. And the casket was put on the back of a wagon, to be taken to the place of burial. His death certificate says that he was buried in Bucklin. As was usual then, the body was not embalmed; he could not have been taken very far. Those who attended the funeral, cant remember, but supposed that he was buried in Bucklin. There is a nice stone at the grave of Ellen, with plenty of room, but it is not inscribed with anything about him. There are four other family graves there. The aunts said that they knew there were some unmarked graves there, but couldnt remember who they were. I checked the Bucklin Cemetery records, and other reasonably close cemeteries, but he was not listed.
After some time, I learned that Mrs Ila Smiley, had been keeping a private duplicate record of the Bucklin Cemetery.
This shows:
Position 1. Ellen; 2. Peter; 3. Peter's second wife, Mattie; 5. his daughter Lola Van Vleet; 6. their son Ben; 7. Bens wife, Emma; 8. Bens grandson, Billy Rogers.
It also shows that Major Hoard is buried here, which is an error. Major and his family are buried in a plot to the southwest of Peter.
Question--Was he so in disfavor with his family, that they purposely did not put up a stone? This is not reasonable, and out of character. They took care of him in his last days, and the Bucklin Banner reports that he was a visitor in his daughter, Cora Smiths home from time to time. She gave a dinner party for him for him in March of 1917, and invited all the Hoard family. However, there was no mention of his second family. Where were they? Cora was well able to afford a stone, and saw to it that other relatives had a nice stone. Why didnt she put up one for her father? At this time, the best supposition is - the stones for Mattie and Peter had been stolen after the death of Cora in 1947. This was known to have happened other times in this cemetery.
Flora lived to be 99 years old. She died 3 June 1961, a resident of Loma Linda, California, and buried in Montecito Memorial Park.
This is a Hoard Family who lived in or near Ford County, Kansas, at the time, probably of one of Cora's brothers. If anyone can identify it, please contact us. |
