Hale Hezekiah Lamb, son of Hezekiah Lamb and Hannah Small, was born 13 August 1854, in Fayette County, Iowa. Soon after his birth, his parents moved to Dallas County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He was married 24 December 1874, in Fremont County, Iowa, to Mary "Mollie" Kelsay. She was born 14 October 1858, in Benton township, Fremont County, daughter of William Kelsay and Mary Ann Edgerton. (See: Kelsay Family and Edgerton Family in Part V). |
Hale was a miller and a farmer. Their five oldest children were born in Fremont County. Their son, Clyde, died and was buried there. In the spring of 1885, they located near Guide Rock, Nebraska, where he worked awhile for the railroad. Four more children were born here, and again they lost a son, Leonard, and buried him in Guide Rock.
In the spring of 1892, they moved to Jewell County, Kansas, 1 1/2 mile west of Northbranch, on a farm that belonged to an uncle of Mollies, Zel Edgerton. Three of the children were born here.

In the fall of 1900, they moved onto the farm of his mothers. His brother, Luna Albert Lamb, had been living there, but after he was married, he moved to Ford County, Kansas, which left his mother alone. The farm was now to become Hale's, for taking care of his aged mother the rest of her days. |

When Hale and Mollie moved on to the place they built a house for their own family, and later when Hannah had died, they used the lumber from her house to add on to theirs. They finished raising their family here. |
![]() |
Daughter Maud was married and had two children before Mollies youngest child was born.
Three of their daughters moved to California. None of them ever had an opportunity to see their parents again, or return for a visit to their old home.
When Fae was a young woman, her older sisters pleaded with her to come out to California, but Mary refused to let her go, she had lost enough daughters. This left them with a son and their three youngest daughters at home. The girls adored their big brother.

Hale particularly delighted in his grandchildren. Those of his daughter Maud lived nearby, until they moved to Minneapolis, Kansas. Rufus, Iva, Elsie and Olive lived close to them. He loved it when Fae would gather up nieces and nephews and bring them home.

In the spring of 1930, Hale and Mary moved into Northbranch, to a nice house that was located across the street from the Quaker Cemetery.
Mollie died unexpectedly, of a stroke, on 7 September 1932. The demands of taking care of Hale through his last illness had been a strain on her. Six weeks later, Hale died of liver cancer on 26 October 1932. Both died in Northbranch. Both were buried in Guide Rock, Nebraska, beside their son Leonard.
Hales obituary says:
"He sought and found God in the forgiveness of sins, February 1894, and a few months later was wholly sanctified, uniting with the Wesleyan Methodist Church. He lived a consistent Christian life, being held in high esteem by the church as well as by all who knew him. His life from the time of his acceptance of Christ as his Savior was a living testimony of his complete surrender to his Master.
"The church early recognized his worth in public service. He not only filled the most important places in the local church with credit, but was often called to fill the pulpit, in his own, as well as in neighboring churches, and for many years had a local conference license. He was recognized as a man ever seeking Divine guidance, a devout Bible student, and with a burning desire for the salvation of souls. This was perhaps as much or more made manifest by his call to personal work, as by his public service, and many individuals can testify of his faithfulness in coming to them to read the Bible and pray for them as a direct call to the Master. Carefulness to mention his Master to those with whom he came in contact was to him a joyous duty. It has been said by those who cared for him in his last weeks of sickness that without a single exception, each one of his many visitors heard his cheerful testimony to his Masters saving grace, regardless of his own personal suffering.
"Surely with bowed heads, all we who knew him would say, A Prince has fallen in Israel. He has heard the welcome call of the Master. Thou hast been faithful over a few things. Come thou, and enter into the joy of the Lord."

Obituary:
Boyd Silsby died 20 February 2,008, at Jewell County Hospital in Mankato, Kansas. His family, friends and community will mourn his passing, but celebrate his life. He was a loving husband, wonderful father, proud veteran and dedicated community leader.
Boyd was born on the Silsby family farm, near Northbranch, Kanss, on 9 December 1924. His father, Jim, and his mother, Iva, raised 10 children during the difficult years of the Depression and World War II. The children learned how to work hard, enjoy life in simple ways, and lovingly care for their families.
Life on the farm during the 1930s included much hardship, but the Silsby family remembered more good times than bad. Boyd was a wonderful storyteller and made us all laugh with stories about his family and the neighbors. Through all his stores we all learned that one can find something to laugh about, even in tough times.
Boyd attended a one-room school two miles from home before going to high school in Burr Oak. During high school, Boyd and his sisters rented a small house in town rather than traveling home everyday. Part-time jobs paid for their rent and groceries. After graduation, Boyd attended technical school in Wichita, earning a certification as a welder and found work building aircraft carriers in the shipyards near Portland. Oregon. Farm youngsters had critical skills that the war effort required and all of the Silsby children raised crops, built aircraft, welded deck plates or nursed the wounded.
Boyd was drafted in 1945, serving as an army engineer in the Pacific. The skills he learned on the farm were well suited to his work operating heavy equipment while rebuilding Tokyo. Although halfway around the world boys from Burr oak found each other. Keith Terrill and Boyd shared several adventures in Japan. Their fridndship continued throughout their lives and has extended through their children.
When he returned home after the war, Boyd worked on the farm. During the cold winter of 1948, he met a young teacher named Donna Blew. Donna was teachin;g at the one-room school that Boyd had attended as a child. Before Christmas she recruited Keith Terrill to play Santa claus for the students in the Christmas play. Keith was hesitant, howeber. Boyd said hed be the Santa if the schoolteacher would accompany hi on a date. Boyd ad Donna Lea Blew were married 15 May 1949 at Burr Oak, Kansas. They were married for 58 years.
The Silsby family was mobile and growing through the 1950s and into the 60s. Boyd operated heavy equipment while working on dam projects, missile silos and road construction in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. Boyd and Donna raised their four children whle moving frequently from one trailer park to the next.
A constant element in every move was quick involvement in church and Sunday School. In 1963, Donna, Boyd and the children returned to Jewell County. Boyd became a business partner with Donnas brother, Merle Blew, at Mankato Welding. The two men remained partners for 30 years.
Living in Burr Oak and then Mankato allowed the Silsby family to become part of a community. Boyd was active at church, in business, supporting 4-H and other community events. Perhaps he was most closely associated with the Hewell Count Threshing Bee. His love of antique farm equipment and steam engines led to his involvemet with the first bee in 1977 and lasted until his final day. While the challenge of restoring and maintaining antique equipment drew Boyds interest are what he enjoysed most.
Boyd served on the Jewell County hospital Board, 4-H Fair committee, township treasurer, Methodist church trustee, Economic develoooopment committee, Mankato Chamber of Commerce, operating engineer on large conservation and defense projects; was a member of Jewell County Historical Society, Masonic Lodge, American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kansas Antique Steam Safety Association and was a co-owner of Mankato Welding and Machine.
As the family discussed the list of honorary pallbearers we were faced with a pleasant dilemma. The list had grown so long that we didnt know how to choose. What better testimony to a life that was lived in service to family and frinends. The fact that so many people would like to serve as a pallbearer or attend a service to remember Boyd, would likely tigger a modest response of thats really something.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, James M and Iva Silsby; siblings: Doyle Silsby (Dorthea), Belle Kandelia (Al), Glendora Paxton (Jim), infant twin sisters, and Travis Wayne Silsby (infant grandchild.)
Survivors include: his wife Donna of the home in Mankato;
descendents:
Ann Renee Silsby Holl (June), Lawerence, Kansas, two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild;
Tadhi Lea Silsby Hayes (Doug), Amarillo, Texas, 3 grandchildren,
Clayton Boyd Silsby, Manhattann, Kansas, three grandchildren,
brothers and sisters, Thelma Pierson, Ferne Harris, Mary Ahmstead, Madeline Pinkston, (Charles). Edythe Francis (Harold), and Berniece Harris.
Visitation was from 2-4 pm on 24 February 2008, at Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato. A memorial service was held at the church on 25 February 2008, at 2 pm. Boyds final resting place is Mount Hope Cemetery, in Mankato.
