Part I - Hezekiah Lamb and Hannah Small
Family Group "D"
Wilson Beauchamp Lamb, Sr, son of Hezekiah Lamb and Hannah Small, was born 17 October 1840, in Grant County, Indiana.
During the Civil War, Wilson served in County C, 4th Reg, Iowa Inf., second enlistment 20 December 1861. He was wounded in the back slightly 22 May 1863. He was reinstated January 1964, and was a part of the famous "March through Georgia" under General Sherman. He was discharged 24 July 1865. After the war he became a minister and a farmer.
The following is my translation of a letter that he wrote to his parents. It was written on a small piece of paper in red ink, utilizing every available space. It also contained a 2 1/2 inch drawing of two hearts, entwined with fancy curlicues, and flowers, and the word "Truth," and two smaller drawings of the American Flag.
Camp East Point, Ga.
Ap (?) the 2nd 1864
Mr. Hezekiah and Hannah Lamb Dear pearants as this is sunday night and I am without anything to interest me i will try and write you a few lines to lett you know that I an still living and well and sincerely trust this may find you the same. this is sunday night and how I wish that I could be assembled with you as of yore around the old fier place on __?__ (mukeltl?), father I never lay down to rest without thinking of how we used to gather around the family circle after ons days work was ended, mother sitting in one corner with her knitting and the baby on her lap, while thee would set by the table and read to us. At other times thee would be up stairs at work making shoes and mother would be sitting by the little stove with her knitting, while very likely I would be down stairs bothering the girls while they were getting supper, as singing some familar song, all this will at times rush along my mind and caused the tears to flow in rememberence of the happy days that have fled and gone, never more to return. Well father I can say one thing of a truth and that is I have never layed down to sleep at night without thinking of you and my dear old home, there is not a day passes by what my mind is recalled to thee dear ones at home. I will say no more about my dear home this time, only I hope to be remembered by all of the family there is nothing of importance to write at this time but I shall write once ever week just to let you know how I am getting along if nothing more there is a detail of men to go and build breast works nearer to Atlanta than what we are. i suppose it is Sherman’s intention to shorten his lines around Atlanta so as to spend a part of his Army back along the railroad to grab it; we have not had any mail for sometime, I expect the rebs have got a part of our mail lately. I have drawn two hearts on this paper as a presidenceent to you both.
"Go forth, my darling, to the conflict," Thus spoke a mother to her boy. "Ne’er let me have you turned away when traitor threatened ones loved country to destroy; Take with you a mother’s blessing.
Keep this bible near your heart; Never forget a mother’s prayers are with you, and her love for you will never depart"
Alls well, he sleeps, the orange flowers bloom on his grave, Sadly she weeps for him who dies on the battle field, her own loved soldier boy so brave.
"Go, for your Country’s voice is calling, All stout of heart, and strong of hand, How could you nobler die, than fighting bravely for your God and honored native-land;
And this is one last parting, If death braked the living spell, trust him who watcheth e’en the sparrow when it falleth"
Foremost among the ranks in battle, stood forth the patriot mother’s boy, Clear o’er the din of musket’s rattle, Rang the cheering words of that brave soldier boy.
I have writen these lines just because I thought they would suit Mother. I will send Lydia a letter next time with a heart on also, Margaret another, they are of my own drawing, and being the first are not very nice, but I know you will prise them the more on the account of me making them. father, I have drawn (?) of General Logan’s address to the 15 Army Cav for its good conduct. I will send it to you, please retain it until I get home. We have not been paid yet _? _? _? and I have no stamps yet excuse this poorly written letter I am ever your son
Wilson B Lamb to Hezekiah Lamb Hannah Lamb"

A few verses suggested upon learning of the death of Perry Lamb, and sent to his grandparents with expressions of deep sympathy, by C. L. Wood, Alma, Michigan.
Our home seems strange and lonely, and time hangs heavy here, Since "Uncle Sam" came in one day, and summoned one so dear. Age had grown upon us, our locks were whitening fast, A grandson, strong and manly, had lightened every task. We took him when a tender child made motherless by death, He grew and came to manhood as a bird grows in its nest. Our age was well supported now by his strong will and arm. Our care he would reciprocate removing all alarm. A cruel war was waging far o’er a distant sea. It meant the world’s unmaking, and filled the "Huns" with glee. Three years of awful carnage had into history gone; Humanity stood appealing for men both young and strong. To fill depleted Armies was the purpose of this call. Democracy and freedom was now to rise or fall. Then "Uncle Sam" responded, "Be patient and I’ll be there." We read it in the papers, and it filled the very air. Conscription was the watch-word by which to meet this thing. Our guns were in the making; our men were on the wing. This would mean selective draft of the fairest and the best; This would take our Perry, he was listed with the rest. Age and infirmities might appeal, was the hope his grandma had, But remembering the mighty Civil War, his grandpa shook his head. The list of those selected was quickly published out. Here was the name of Perry Lamb, and others round about. It was hard to think of parting, for he was our support, But this, the call of country, we had little hope to thwart. He left and went into training, with gun, and sword, and mask, But Perry was a Christian, tho he went to such a task. Months now seemed years, while here alone we waited every mail, To hear from this brave soldier, with little of detail. Perry was well and hopeful, was the cheeriest of all Found in the line of duty, at sound of bugle call. For a letter to come as usual, we waited long in vain, Could it be our boy had fallen, and silent would remain? God brace us for this sorrow, if such shall be his fate. Yes, for the sad tomorrow, for that may prove the date. Suspended silence broken, our bell rang in the night. Our soldier boy had fallen, engaged in awful fight. His body peaceful resting, in a land beyond the sea, His spirit now is basking, where war shall never be. Our hope is now to meet him, and to know him over there, Safe in that better country, and with him joy to share. God keep us ever faithful until our race is run, And may we all be grateful, for that life in Christ begun.
