Silas Overman Lamb, son of Hezekiah Lamb and Hannah Small, was born 8 May 1837, in Grant County, Indiana. The birth year of Silas is subject to question. Many relatives list the date as 1838. Material copied from Silass Bible gives the date as 1837. By 1853, many Quaker families were on the move west. Silas was about 16, when his family, and many other Quaker families, left Grant County, Indiana. They lived briefly in Fayette County, but by 1857, they had settled in Dallas County, Iowa, near the town of Redfield.
Silas was married 27 December 1857, in Dallas County, to Martha Meek, who was born 24 January 1838, in Grant County, Indiana, daughter of Isaac Meek III and Ruth Jones. (See: Part I, Meek Family)
They had a family of five children, when they left Dallas County, about 1867/8, and moved to Fremont County, in the south west corner of Iowa.
Silas bought into the flourmill at Riverton, and operated the mill for several years. The mill is believed to have been located on Mill Creek about 1 1/2 miles south of Riverton. The mill was closed down about 1890, and it is thought the building was moved to the town of Riverton. Several of his son are reported to have worked in the mill. Their son, Martin Lamb, listed his occupation as miller at the time of his marriage in 1883. Residents of Riverton still speak of "Wood" Lamb, (James Elwood), working in the elevator at Riverton for years. Several of his children moved to Custer County, Nebraska, between 1890 and 1896. Martha died 14 August 1895, buried at Riverton. Silas lived for a time with his sons in Nebraska.
He was married again 26 September 1909, in Mason City, Custer County, Nebraska, to Nancy Ann Meek, the sister of his first wife, Martha. Nancys first husband was Orange Lamb, his brother. He gave his age as 72, and Nancy was 54. They were married by a Justice of the Peace, Harry Lamb. Nancy may have died shortly after that. Silas was residing with his daughter and family in Riverton, Iowa, at the time of his death. He died 22 June 1926, at the age of 89 plus years, and is buried in the Riverton Cemetery south of town, also known as Utterback of Mt. Zion Cemetery.
