When a small boy he moved with his parents from Ohio to Indiana. In 1863, they moved from Indiana to Clay County, Iowa, where he was united in marriage to Mary A. Children:
James Anderson Morris, son of Minerva Gallimore and Paxton Morris, was born 5 February 1854 in Berlin Township, Tipton, Indiana.
He was the eighth child of six boys and five girls. The family moved to Webb, Iowa, in 1861 (according to Vernice Gervaise, a grand-daughter).
James was working as a farm hand for James Lurve in 1880 (in Clay County, Iowa). His parents and some brothers were also living in Clay County, Iowa as this time.
James, or Anderson, as he was mostly known, married 3 March 1884 in Herdland, Clay co, Iowa, to Mary Eva "Mate" Brown, who was born 20 August 1864 in Otsego County (or Steuben County?), New York. She died 27 December 1928 in Hazen, Mercer County, North Dakota.
Her parents were William Daniel Brown and his wife Lydia Youmans Brown.
Father: William Daniel Brown, born 20 August 1827 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
Mother: Lydia Mary Youmans, born 20 December 1839 in Morrisville, Madison, New York.
It is not known when the family came to Iowa, but they were living in Clay County, Iowa, near Sioux Rapids, in 1880. A brother, Hubbard, was born in Iowa in January 1872.
Mary, who was called "Mate" by her family, was a tall, thin woman, about 5'10"--taller than her husband.
The family moved to Mercer County, North Dakota about 1908, according to her death certificate. It is thought that some brothers (Archie for sure) and sisters and her parents had settled there earlier.
"James and "Mate" later had four sons and two daughters besides twins that died in infancy. The family lived in Iowa most of the time, but also in Amery, Wisconsin for a time. As things were not exactly booming in Ayershire, Iowa about 1900, Anderson Morris and his brother-in-law, Howard Hendry, went to Winnipeg to work on the railroad. This was about 1900, and was during a year-long rail strike.
"Needless to say, they returned back to Amery, Wisconsin, and went back to doing construction work. However, a son, Forrest Laverne, was born to the Morris' family in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on January 5, 1902.
"Howard Hendry and Anderson Morris decided to file on a homestead in North Dakota about 1908. They settled in Mercer County, North Dakota and began farming. Having a talent for making things, he set up a blacksmith shop, complete with forge, and began making things, not only for himself, but for his neighbors also. In those days everyone was poor so most of the time they had to bring their own coal for the forge, although he usually did the work for free.
"He did so much of this work that his hand (even relaxed) was sort of clenched, as though holding a hammer (recollection of grandson Dale Ford). Dale also said that grandpa Morris had been a horse trader as a young man in Ohio, but as far as we know he never was in Ohio, so perhaps some other state or maybe even some other relative. His brother Jesse Morris lived nearby and was also talented in blacksmith work and also wood carving.
"The Morris farm was sandy soiled, but luckily one could get water almost anywhere at about ten feet deep. They had a big well in a corner of the blacksmith shop where they used to get water for the house (according to Dale Ford). In the summer they would lower perishables in pails into the water to keep them cool. James A. Morris was a short, thin man with a full white beard.
"Some of her grandchildren remember that Mary was known for her "one minute" pudding, which made for a quick lunch. They also remember that each year she put fresh straw in the tickings for their beds.
"Her daughter Lydia remembered that once when she was eight years old a storm cloud came up and they beat it home. Turned out to be a cyclone cloud. "We kids held pillows against the window panes to keep them from blowing out. Didn't hurt us but some buildings were destroyed in the county.
"The bedroom we girls slept in was a trundle bed, which slipped under the big bed in the daytime. Living room-kitchen was a lean-to. I can remember our organ in the living room. Rag carpets were used in the living room. The kitchen was scrubbed with a scrub brush."
Mrs. Morris died in 1928, and James Anderson went to live with his daughter, Eva Ford, and her family until he died on 31 January 1942. They are both buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, which is mostly a family cemetery with 16 sites.

Lydia Emaline Morris, daughter of Howard Raymond Morris and Mary Eva Brown, was born 13 June 1890 in Ayrshire, Palo Alto, Iowa, and died 16 January 1972 at home at 3038 Dover St., Long-view, Cowlitz County, Washington. (Charles & James Seel were in her house when she died.) She was buried in Longview Memorial Park, Longview, Cowlitz County, Washington. She was a member of the Evangelical Church at Golden Valley, North Dakota.
"She graduated from high school in Ayrshire on May 28, 1908. The graduating class was composed of two other girls besides herself, one of whom (Della Andre) who later married her brother, Ed. Lydia came out to Mercer County, North Dakota, to take a teaching job. She probably chose that location because her Uncle Archie Brown had homesteaded in that locality and also worked on the local newspaper. Soon after this her whole family moved out there and homesteaded in Mercer County.
She was teaching in the little town of Cambridge, North Dakota in 1912 and had met a newspaperman from Kasmer (near Golden Valley) named Lee Dreveskracht. They were married on 2 February 1913, by an Evangelical Lutheran pastor in Krem, Mercer County, North Dakota.
Leberecht "Lee" Ernest Dreveslracht, was born 25 OCT 1877 in La Seur, Sibley co, Minnesota. He was the youngest son of Frederick and Louisa Boeke Dreveskracht.
Father: Friedrich Anton Dreveskracht, born 5 August 1822 in Kirchheide, Lippe-Detmold, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
Mother: Louisa Wilhelmine BOoele, born 17 May 1835 in Kirchheide, Lippe-Detmold, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
His father was a farmer and both of Lee's parents came to Minnesota from Prussia. Lee lived on the farm with his parents until 19 years of age.
Obituary:
"He secured a position with the First National Bank of LeSueuer, Minnesota, where he was an assistant cashier for two years. Indoor life and work was too confining for him so he left for Atlanta, Georgia, where he secured a position as a reporter on Atlanta Constitution, remaining there for two years. His health improving he returned to Minnesota and became a traveling salesman for a wholesale grocery house for a time.
"In 1906 he came to Mercer County, North Dakota and took up a homestead near Kasmer, where he lived and worked hard for five years. He began publishing the German-American from his homestead. It was published with the articles in both English & German. In 1908 Lee Dreveskracht did taxidermy work and at one time planned to open a taxidermy shop. He also did some dealing in buying and selling land.
"With the building of the railroad Mr. Dreveskracht left the farm and located at the townsite of the new town of Olanta, and took up the challenge of changing the name of the new town. He said Golden Valley was more appropriate in that it ably described the vast fields of golden grain in Goodman's Valley.
"He changed the name of his paper, and established a weekly newspaper, "Golden Valley American". His activities prospered and in recent years has become one the best equipped country newspaper offices in the state. The deceased served as postmaster here for some time, was U.S. commissioner, justice of peace, and member of the school board. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Elks and Yeomen lodges.
"His daughter Marian remembers that he usually wore a suit and white shirts with black cuff protectors at the office. He chewed tobacco and drove a big car. She and her brother always stopped in after school, and he would give them each a nickel for ice cream cones, sometimes without even stopping to talk to them."
Mercer County Republican--April 3, 1908)
L.E. Dreveskracht is showing some fine specimens of grouse and deer heads that he mounted the past winter and next winter plans to open a taxidermy here as he has been offered more work in this line than he is prepared to take care of.
(The Golden Valley American--August 2, 1912) Lee Dreveskracht is expecting to put up a Building in Kasmer soon and open up a land office. He may also become Postmaster.

(The Golden Valley American--September 7, 1923) L.E. Dreveskracht is reported as recovering nicely at the Bismarck Hospital from his recent operation and expects to be back home on Saturday night.
Her husband had been in failing health for some time but became ill from food poisoning and died after four days of suffering on April 27, 1924. (Marian said later that he was in terrible pain, the cause was bad hamburger from the local restaurant.)
By this time the newspaper was well established so Lydia continued to keep it going. As she had three small children to care for, she finally sold the paper and found other work. For a time she distributed commodities for the government, as the country was in a depression and there was no welfare in those days.
In the late thirties, she went to the Los Angeles, California area, and worked as a housekeeper for Walt Disney, the movie man and creator of Mickey Mouse. Here she met a man named Phil J Hoover, and soon they were married, about 1939 near Los Angeles, California. He ws born 13 December 1897 in Broodland, Illinois.
They moved to Helena, Montana, working at the veterans hospital there, this was prior to 1942, as they were living there then.
A few years later she came to Longview, Washington, to visit some old Golden Valley friends, Charlie & Della Scharf. She really liked it in Washington and decided to stay. She found a job and remained in Longview for the rest of her life. She cooked at the Longview Fibre (paper mill) cafeteria for a time, and also at the Sportscenter Bar & Grill.
After the war, in February 1947, her son Lewis and his wife moved to Longview and stayed. Later, in 1953, her daughter Marian also moved her family out to Longview, Washington.
In 1963 her husband Phil, who was a cement finisher, was accidentally knocked off a bridge (at Castle Rock, Washington) he was working on and drowned. After settling their affairs and disposing of their home, she moved to her daughter-in-law's apartment complex.
Her next door neighbor, as chance would have it, was her granddaughter Corinne, & her husband George Seel, who was just getting started having her children. They all not only loved her, but enjoyed her cooking, spending lots of time eating goodies, and generally getting spoiled. She got quite a reputation as a lot of the neighborhood children came to get their loose teeth pulled.
She fell and broke a hip about 1970, and was laid up several months. She seemed to lose a lot of interest in things, the family was sort of concerned about this, but when spring came she soon perked up and soon was pretty much her old self again. After attending a family birthday party for her grandson's wife (Cathy Buckner Retterath), and having a wonderful time, she quietly died in her bed that evening. She had been watching the great-grandchildren (Jim & Charles Seel) while the Seel's were looking at a house, and they thought she had gone to sleep, and just came on home when their parents came back. This was January 16, 1972.
Survivors include two sons, Louis Dreveskracht of Longview and Boyd of Stanton, N.D.; one daughter, Mrs. Marian Retterath of Longview; three step-sons, Wallace Hoover of Ellensburg, Robert of Tacoma, Herbert of Seattle; one brother, Fred L. Morris of Cottage Grove, Ore.; six grandchildren; three great-grandsons (Note: Tom, Jim & Charlie Seel). Services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Ditlevsen-Moore Chapel with the Rev. John Steppert officiating. Concluding service and interment will be at the Longview Memorial Park. Ditlevsen-Moore Funeral Home is in charge. Longview Daily News, Longview, Washington.

Marian Arlene Dreveskracht was born 21 December 1913 in Golden Valley, North Dakota, where her father published the local newspaper. She was the daughter of Lee Dreveskracht & Lydia Morris Dreveskracht.
She fondly remembered stopping in the print shop every day after school and her father giving her a nickel for ice cream. He was a busy man, but the family did a lot of fun things together--swimming, picnicking, and visiting. Her mother's parents and many aunts and cousins lived close by, so she had a busy and happy childhood.
Her father died suddenly when she was 10, and she had to assume a lot of responsibility helping care for her two younger brothers so her mother could keep the newspaper going. After finishing high school, she attended State Teachers College in Dickinson, North Dakota, and then taught country school for several years.
In 1933, while teaching in nearby Pleasant Valley, she met and married Raymond George Retterath, who was born 17 April 1912 in Stanton, Mercer, North Dakota.
She continued to teach for several years, taking her little girl, Corinne, with her. Her husband was manager of the Stanton, North Dakota Farmer's Union Oil Company and Marian became his bookkeeper. As a young married, she played on the ladies softball team, bowled, and loved to play the piano. She played piano for the baptist Church Sunday school, and also enjoyed playing for friends.
She was good with children and helped with the Girl Scouts. Later, when the Cub Scouts met at her home, she made the best doughnuts. Her children all say she was a great cook. Marian and Raymond were divorced in 1950. Mrs. Retterath and her children came to Longview, Washington in 1953 to be near her mother. She found a great job as bookkeeper for Everett Wagner's Atlantic Richfield oil bulk plant, where she worked until she retired in 1977.
Her grandchildren loved to run her adding machine and draw pictures on old business forms. Marian worked hard all day then went home and cooked and cleaned for her two young sons. Busy as she was, she enjoyed taking them to the beach and doing other fun things. We all remember how much fun she was to be with. She also managed to take her mother grocery shopping and looked in on her often, and was a good, faithful daughter. "Once a friend, always a friend" was her motto.
There was always someone stopping at her home for a few days, relatives or old North Dakota friends. She liked people and people liked her. After her mother died in 1972, she took over making some occasional goodies for her brother Louis--bread, chili, and oyster stew were some of the things she was famous for.
After retiring in 1977, she was able to do some of the things she never had time for before. She enjoyed working in her yard. She often drove to Seattle or to Oregon to visit relatives. She loved to go to all of the bazaars at Christmas time. She loved Christmas and always went all out.
She made several trips to Hawaii with relatives and old friends, and even took a trip to Alaska. The boat broke down and never got there--so the second trip was free, and she got to Alaska after all. She was active right up to the last. She loved to play Skip-Bo and really enjoyed her children and grandchildren.
Her grandson Charles Seel remembers that she was a die-hard Portland Trailblazers fan, and remembers always getting an Eskimo Pie when he went to spend the night at her house. He also liked that she had a remote-controlled, color TV to watch, way before his family got one. He was also glad that she got to attend his wedding in 1988.
