Clarence W. Smith, son of Amy Lamb and William O Smith, was born 28 September 1906, in Fullerton, Nebraska. He was a young child, when he moved with his family to North Dakota, to homestead.
"The first thing I can remember is sitting in a small kitchen with my mother, beside a roaring fire, and snow outside that almost reached the eaves of the house. I was told later that my brother Howard was in the hospital in Bismark for an appendectomy. We had a picture postcard of the hospital showing the location of the room he occupied. He was proud of that.
"The next thing I remember is riding in a buggy between my Mother Amy Smith, and my Grandmother Kate Lamb. We were following two covered wagons. The weather was warm, the countryside quite green, and very hilly. At one place the road descended into a canyon at a very steep grade. After a consultation among the men, it was decided to chain the two real wheels of the wagons, and not rely on the brakes and the horses to hold them back.
"The next event that stuck in my mind was when I was eating a late breakfast and after being served, my mother went outside. Then I saw a covered wagon and the buggy leaving the yard. I thought I was being left behind, so I jumped from the table and ran to catch the buggy shouting as loud as I could. It took some time to quiet me, and explain that Grandma and her family were going to Fullerton and we were going to live here in Genoa (Nebraska) were we had relatives. Ben Lamb stayed with us.
"When I was nine and ten years old, I spent my summer vacations visiting Grandma, Grandpa, Frank and Orville. We saw Bethel quite often. However, she spent most of her time at Uncle Bish's (Bishop). His wife was not in the best of health, so had Bethel live with them part time and helped out. They lived only a couple of blocks away. Grandpa farmed additional land and was away most of the time, and Glen had already left home. The rest of us lived on the 40 acres, down by the river. Although I was the youngest, and taken advantage of rather often, it was a very enjoyable part of my growing up."
After High School, Clarence began working in a bank in Denver, Colorado.
He was married 12 September 1935, in Brighton, Colorado, to Esther Peppler, born 29 June 1909, in Fort Morgan, Colorado, daughter of Fred Peppler and Elizabeth Spear.
