Part I - Hezekiah Lamb and Hannah Small
Family Group "C"
She was married 9 January 1858 in Dallas County, Iowa, to James Presley Estes, who was born in 1837, in Hart County, Kentucky, and died 9 September 1904, the son of George Washington Estes and Corilla Crane. (See: Estes Family, Part I)
James enlisted in the Civil War, 11 August 1862. He was a private in Company H, 39th Infantry, Iowa. He was wounded in battle at Parkins Crossroads. A George M Estes, enlisted at the same time and was in the same company.
There is little information about Jane. However, a copy of a tear-stained letter from her to Hezekiah is included here. Hezekiah would have been living in Fremont County, Iowa, at the time. Since she had to write to them instead of seeing them in person, one might assume that the Estes family was in Dallas County. I would estimate that the letter was written sometime between 1870 and 1875.
February the ____, Dear father I seat myself with a painful heart to write to you to see if you can give me any information about our boys Wilson and Curtis left home last Thursday morning telling me that they were going to school and that is the last that we have seen or heard of them They had some trouble with their father that morning he whipped both of them I suppose that is the cause of them leaving but oh how unthoughtful they must make him to leave their mother and brother and sister I should not have thought it of them for I have always tryed to teach them better I am about distressed about them they did not have one cent in their pockets and how they will get anything to eat is more than I can tell father if they are there I ____(?) that you and mother will give them good advice and try and get them to come home I know just as well as they do that they have a hard hearted father and dont treat them as he ought to but they had better (take, or have) too kick, and cuffs rather than have left home now father if they are there let them stay till I can send them money to come home with for I dont want to haft them start home with none tell Curtis if he should be there that mother has cryed day and night for she has always tryed to her part by them it seems to me that all my troubles will surely kill me father if they are there do the best by them you can I cant write any more I am in such distress that I cant write do not wait many minutes till you let me know if there
The story handed down in the family says that James whipped the boys, Curtis and Wilson, because they had gone to a dance, and that they ran away from home, went to Colorado, and founded Estes Park. It cannot be true that they founded Estes Park, because it was already known by that name. However, in that time period, Elkannah Lamb, a Methodist preacher, was preaching, climbing, and conducting tours in Estes Park. (See: Part II) They were related to Elkannah, who was the cousin of their grandfather. It may be they went there because he was there. It may also be because they were related to the Estes family that did found the Park.
James died 9 September 1909. One source says he died in Ollie, Keokuk, Iowa, but I think that needs to be confirmed. On the 1880 Census, they were in Rossville, Shawnee County, Kansas
