He was married 3 February 1811, in Randolph County, to Orpheus (Orpha) Rollins, who was born 1793, in Randolph County, North Carolina.
David Rollins, died September 1827, Greeneville, Greene County, Tennessee
Married before 1790 to Lydia Collins born 1790, Bedford County, Virginia, died before 1809, Randolph County, North Carolina
Marmaduke was a Democrat, a chair maker, and also earned a living boring holes through logs that served as pipes to bring spring water into peoples homes.
When Marmaduke and Orpha moved to Greenville, Tennessee, from Randolph County, they lived on the property of Orphas father, David Rollins, who was born in 1755, in Randolph County, died 4 June 1820 in Greene County, Tennessee, and his wife Lydia Collins.
Orphas first 3 male children were all given the middle name Rollins in honor of her father. Marmaduke decided that there might be too much of Davids influence on Orpha, and that if he didnt move off Davids land, Orpha was bound to name every one of his children Rollins.
So they moved from Limestone Springs to the Houston Cove area, bordering Madison County, North Carolina, along the Paint Creek. Along a mountain trail up this Creek, about 8 miles, is the area of Paint Rock, where their son John Rollins and several of his family settled.
Nathan Marmaduke was on the 1816 Greene County, Tennessee, tax list, but did not own any land. They must have been the first Lambs, in that part of Tennessee. The 1830 Census records no others.
Greeneville was established in 1781, one of the oldest cities in Tennessee. It served as the capital of the Sovereign State of Franklin, from 1785 to 1788, hosted both Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War.
Nathan Marmaduke was a Justice of the Peace, or a Magistrate Judge. His son Nathan Hamilton was the sheriff. Son brought them in, father tried them. Before he died he had about 200 acres of land, but this was apparently divided between his children prior to death, or possibly sold as part of an estate settlement, since there is no record of Orpha having taxable land. After his death his sons gradually acquired 1207 acres.
A granddaughter told this story: Orpha was in the back yard boiling clothes in a large washtub. Marmaduke, either out of mischief or meanness, grabbed up a couple of chickens and threw them into the pot of boiling clothes, killing them. She told Marmaduke that when she died, she wanted to be buried under an old apple tree in the back yard, so that she could keep an eye on him.
He weighed more than 400 pounds at the time of his death. He cut himself badly in the stomach while chopping kraut," and died from the injury, about 1856, and was buried with other members of the family at Rehobeth C P Church in Greenville, but his grave is one of the many unmarked graves. His daughter, Charlotte, is buried there.
Orpha died about 1865, and was indeed, buried under the old apple tree. The old Lamb house is located on Rollins Chapel Road. The Lamb Cemetery is further up the road, toward where Nathan Hamilton used to live. The house is still there in 1996, and has been well cared for.

About a year before they were married, in November 1834, began a tale in which the family peace was disturbed. John Rollins and his brother William Rollins, uncles of Lydia, and 2 others, were accused of stealing 2 hogs of a neighbor. Called as witnesses against John, were Lydia, and Williams son David Rollins. When summoned, Lydia was not found.
In August of 1835, a Grand Jury was formed. John Rollins, under a $500. bond, did not show up. The trial was postponed until March 1836, but still no court action. In July, John was ordered to pay his bond. He still did not show up, and his brother William had to pay the bond.
In August, the sheriff found John, and William was ordered to bring him into Court, which he did not do, and was ordered to pay the considerable court costs. Finally in November 1836, the judge wanted to drop the case. The owner of the hogs, and the other defendants objected, and a Grand Jury met. But the case against John was dropped, and William did not have to pay the court costs. The key witness, Lydia H Lamb, had by this time become Mrs. John Rollins.

Nathan died 15 August 1872, and Katherine died 7 January 1897, both in Greene County, and Katherine was buried in the Lamb Family Cemetery, in Greene County on Rollins Chapel Road, Cove Creek.
It took years to settle the estate, which was declared insolvent, resulting from Nathans mismanagement. His estate was in probate from 8 October 1872, to 18 October 1907, in Greeneville, Greene County John Winkle was the Administrator of the estate, and was later sued by widow Katherine, for mismanagement, and the Court appointed a new Administrator, and guardian, W B Whitlock.
It was not really settled, until, finally, on 18 October 1907, in Greene County, the Deed book 83, p 298, duly certified, equal division of these shares of Nathans real estate, between these heirs: William P Lamb, which included Eliza Lamb, now Waddle; Mary Stills; Orpha Carlisle; and Martha Keller; Rebecca Gentry or Davis; N W S Lamb, and Sarah Lamb; John W Lamb; James A Lamb, and Duke Lamb (in John W Lamb line); Thomas J Lamb; and Charlotte Dills.
This family line is supplied (1996) by Wilma Sue Green, of Rantoul, Illinois, who says: He didnt have much time to manage his business affairs, for he was more than busy managing his personal affairs - liasons with women, as it were - and that in addition to fathering 13 children by his wife Katherine, he also fathered at least 37 illegitimate ones by other women," including Wilmas grandfather was able to identify almost all of them by name.
Nathan is reportedly the first of the Lambs to be buried in the Lamb Family Cemetery, on his former property in Houston Cove, Greene County. He had a favorite, large persimmon tree on a hill behind his home. Once, he accidentally shot himself in the leg with an old hog rifle," & thought he was going to die, and asked to be buried under that persimmon tree.
He didnt die from the gunshot wound, but lived on for several years afterward. When he died, his family honored her request and buried him under that tree. The tree is no longer there. However, family members have kept the burial ground well maintained, and that is much to their credit, considering its remoteness.

During the Civil War, Riley was a Captain in the home guard of Greeneville.
One day a young man overheard 3 men, Jake Mills, John Sage and Jim Haire, plotting to kill Riley. Riley set out to kill them before they could get to him. He found Jim Haire near the present-day site of the Rollins Chapel on Rollins Chapel Road, just off Highway 107, in the Houston Cove area, and killed him. He found Jake Mills and John Sage in nearby Houston valley, where he killed them, too.
When some men started to bury Jim Haire in the Rehobeth C P Church Cemetery, Riley told them Youre not going to bury that SOB in the same cemetery where my relatives are buried. probably referring to his father Marmaduke. So, Jim was buried in what came to be known as the Haire cemetery. Someone turned Riley in to the Confederate Army at Bulls Gap, Tennessee, who promptly put a $500 reward on his head. Riley fled into Georgia, where he remained, leaving his wife, Elizabeth, in Greeneville. On a trip home after the war, he supposedly found Elizabeth shacked up with another man, and so went back to Georgia.
While in Georgia, he married Catherine Roper, who was born 11 October 1836, in Georgia, (and married previously to John Hicks.) It is not known if he divorced Elizabeth first.

A year later, Zebedee enlisted, leaving his mother with no one to look after her and the children. A few months later, Zebedee came home, wounded. He recuperated and went back, coming home a year later missiing an arm. Quite a lot for a small boy to go through. It may have made him both bitter and mean. Who's to say?
Martha had a difficult life. Ollie's daughter Maggie tells this story: Pardee, he's mean as the booger man. He was cruel. He was mean to Grandmaw and the children. Uncle Lyda, he was mean to him. He had cancer of the spine and it went to his brain, but they didn't know what it was then. In later years Mama and Grandmaw found out about cancer and what all it does. He had all the symptoms. Grandmaw said he went to skin and bones. but after Aunt Dude was killed, why, he just lost his mind, just crazy.
Before that though, all through their married life, my poor old grandmaw had scars all over her face and head where he had hit her, and he'd cuss her, and he would beat Uncle Lyda and Uncle Harry, them two.
If Martha tried to stop Pardee from beating the boys, he would turn on her. She lived in fear for her life, praying for deliverance. But when her boys, threatened to kill him, to save themselves, she would refuse to allow it.
She was a good woman, one who prayed all the time, and said that Pardee was alright whenever someone came. She wouldn't even tell her father and brothers, lest they hurt him.
When daughter, Dude, was murdered, she cared for Dude's two young children for awhile.
Pardee died 23 December 1909, in Madison County, in Wolfe Creek, Madison County, North Carolina. The location of his gravesite is unknown, as are the sites of his father and mother. Martha took her family to Canton, Haywood County, North Carolina.

Dude's niece, Maggie, told this story about her death: Uncle Will, her husband, took Dude and the two children over to Grandmaw Morris' and left them, saying that he and Grandpa were going over the mountain to see about a logging job. The men got on a mule and a horse, and rode off.
Soon after, old Nat Davis, Minnie's husband, come and told Grandmaw a fib. (He just wanted to get Aunt Dude away from Grandmaw). He said Minnie was sick in bed, bad off, and had asked for Dude to come and care for her babies. (Minnie wasn't sick) Will Davis kept at them, until Dude agreed to go.
He carried a big double-barrel shotgun. They had to go way up the mountain, then around the side. Dude was carrying the baby, Helen, and Wylie was holding her dress, when they came to a fence they had to go through. Nathan stopped and took a bottle out of his pocket, and began insisting that she have some of it. She kept refusing. Finally, he said he'd kill her if she didn't drink. She still refused.
Then he took that big double-barreled shotgun and blowed her whole left breast off, and left her lying there, with the children screaming and crying. Uncle Will, on his way back home, heard the children, and found her, still conscious, with blood everywhere. He carried her to Chappel's house which was nearby. She lived long enough to tell him what had happened.
Grandmaw Morris took care of the children for a time. Will Gragg died of heat stroke, about a year later, (1909-1910) After Pardee died, the children were put into an orphanage, later taken by foster parents in South Carolina, until they reached teen age.

Grandson Marshall Styles recalls:
When I was growing up in Woodfin, North Carolina, one tradition I always enjoyed was the Sunday evening dinner at my Grandmother Maw Kate Morris' She would have the WHOLE family over every Sunday - all her children and all their children. That was a houseful, and that was after working at a boarding house on Montford Avenue (one which she later bought, and is still in operation (1996) most all the day.
After she bought the boarding house, we would visit her once or twice a week, every week until she died. In the spring of 1973, I told her that my wife was expecting our first child, and it was due in December of that year.
She was so happy at the announcement. She was still working some in the boarding house; but also was getting help from Helen Gragg Morris Sexton (daughter of Aunt Dude.) she seemed to me to be in good health for a woman of 81.
Well, she said, I don't believe I will be alive to see your baby born. I don't think I will last that long. I was surprised at her comments, because she did not seem unwell. Two months later she was dead.
I would have given anything if she could have lived to see my first-born, because she was so anxiously wanting a grandchild from my family. Many times I have thought of that.
Whenever, I hear the hymn Amazing Grace, I am reminded of her. It was her favorite song, especially the acapello version by Judy Collins released a couple of years before she died.

And my Mama played the Organ, and everybody sung, and my Daddy sung bass, and you know when a bass singer starts to sing they'd say Do-So-Mi-Do? Mama'd say He sold his dog. And every body sang all afternoon Sundays, Saturday nights, any time.
But when they'd all come, the seven of them and seven of us all the time, because Granmaw Martha lived with us, and Mama and Daddy and four children and Uncle Harry and Aunt Kate and five children. And Mama and Aunt Kate would make them beds all over the house, and that just tickled all of us to death. We'd just pile on them pallers.
I wish times was like that again. Here I sit, I used to have crowds, crowds, crowds, Here I sit, nobody but me and an old white cat. Sometimes I get down in the dumps, but I can't do it, I have the Lord, and I look to Him for my company.
