Russell Keith Collicott, son of Raymond Lee Collicott and Alta Esther Lindsey, was born 7 March 1922, in Wray, Yuma County, Colorado. It was in the sand hills between Yuma and Otis County.
He was married 18 October 1941, in Nebraska, to Doris Wehmeir., who was born 18 October 1941, in Kearney, Buffalo County, Nebraska, the daughter of Albert Wehmeier and Hazel Sipes.
Doris' mother died when she was 13 months old, and she was partly raised by (Uncle Bill) relatives. While Russ was in the service, she was one of the ladies to go to North Platte and help at the canteen. She was always hoping to get a chance to see Russ, but never did.
Russ came to Hastings to get Doris so they could be married. They rode the caboose on the end of a freight train most of the day headed to Cozad, Nebraska. They finally got to Kearney, then hitched a ride with a trucker to Cozad, so that Mom, Esther, and his sister, Maxine, could go with them. Doris was not old enough and did not know where her dad was at the time to obtain permission. So they drove to Kearney and lied about their ages, both said they were 21. They found a Methodist Church, to have the ceremony.
Russ was deferred from the draft in the fall to allow time to help his dad get the sugar beets out. He went into the service the 26 December 1942, inducted in Kansas. He had the nickname of "Cozad" while he was in the army. He was at Camp Beal, California, when Penny was born 22 June 1953.
When it was time to be shipped overseas in 1943, the troop train shipped them to New York, then overseas to England. The ship had no escort as they went across the Atlantic before Christmas.
Waiting for the invasion of Normandy Russ had been on a small landing craft in the channel for 7 days, and so glad to finally get off. He was in the 1106th Combat Engineers of hand picked men, and landed on Utah beach, H hour. First in were the paratroopers, then the Combat Engineers.
While there he was delivering a message on his cycle to the Gove River to tell them to charge the Germans, but they shot back. He had no shovel, but dug with his hands to a slit trench and darn glad to have a place out of the line of fire, even if it was a bit messy.
13 days later he was injured delivering a message on a motorcycle, for General Omar Bradley. Russ had a foxhole right outside his tent and delivered verbal messages. A shell blew up the cycle and he went flying through the air holding on to the handlebars. The blast mashed his nose to his face and hurt his leg. They took him to a field tent and tagged him to go home.
Some were evacuated by boat and others by plane. He was lucky as they had room for one more to fly to England. Russ arrived in New York 17 July 1944. While in New York, an artist made a pencil drawing of him, and for fun, made him a Colonel. Don still has the picture.
He was sent to the Bushnell Hospital in Bringham City, Utah. He had a convalescent leave to see his daughter Caryl when she was 6 weeks old. He had a cast from leg to hip. After most of a year in the hospital, he was medically discharged 17 March 1945, from the service, earning a purple heart for his injury.
Russ was a welder and a machinist in Eugene, Oregon for many years. He died with lung cancer 18 November 1979, in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon, and was buried in Oak Hills Cemetery, Lane County.
