Part II Bethia Lamb
Family Group "H"
Bethia Lamb, daughter of Henry Lamb, was born 10 January 1740, in Perquimans County, North Carolina.
She was married 9 July 1761 in New Garden Monthly Meeting, Rowan County, North Carolina, to Captain Benjamin Beeson, Jr., who was born 9 February 1741, in Hopewell Monthly Meeting, Frederick County, Virginia, son of Benjamin Beeson, Sr., and Elizabeth Hunter. Benjamin was listed as Captain. Was he in the Civil War?
Benjamin Beeson was the brother of Frances Beeson, who married Bethias brother Joseph above. (See Beeson Family, Part III)
Benjamin died in 1792, in Rowan County, North Carolina; Bethia died 15 August 1829, near Center, Randolph County, North Carolina.
Two sons, Jonathan and Jehu, migrated to Franklin and Wilkes Counties, in Georgia in the 1780s and then migrated to Tennessee about 1806, and to Madison and Jackson Counties, Alabama, by 1810. In the 1820 Census Jonathan was in Dallas County, Alabama. They eventually moved to Jasper County, Mississippi. Apparently some of the family began to spell their name Beason.
Dr. W. Arthur Allee, 5763 Belevedere, Houston, Texas 77021, has done an account of the descendants of Bethia Lamb. It is to be found in the Clayton Library in Houston.
All of the children were reported in New Garden Monthly Meeting, Guilford County, North Carolina.
Children:
Asahel (Sail) Beeson, son of Bethia Lamb and Benjamin Beeson, Jr, was born 22 February 1766, in Cane Creek Meeting, Guilford County, North Carolina.
He was married about 1780/1 to Elisabeth Ann Pennington (born 15 March 1761, North Carolina). She was the daughter of Levi Pennington (born 1712 Salisburg, Rowan County, North Carolina) and Martha Mendenhall (born 1719 Concord Colony, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Her grandfather was Ephraim Pennington
The Quakers disowned Elizabeth at Center Monthly Meeting, in 1781.
After 1790, Asahel deserted his wife & 4 children, going to South Carolina. He died 12 June 1840 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
The children were all born in Guilford County, North Carolina.
Children:
Ephraim Pennington, born 1689, in Morris County, New Jersey, and died 1760 in Rowan County, North Carolina.
Levi (Sail) Pennington, son of Ephraim Pennington, was born 1712, in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina, and died 5 December 1790, in Randolph County, North Carolina. He married Martha Mendenhall.
The 1789 will of Levi Pennington I lists grandchildren of Rachel and Levi Beeson. Age of Rachel and Levi Beeson between 1780-1789.
In 1789/90 Will of Levi I, he indicates his daughter Elizabeth Beeson is living in his household. Levi I left home property, after death of Martha, to be passed on to grandson, Levi Beeson, as long as Elizabeth continues to live there.
In 1790 Spart. District, South Carolina Census: Sail Beeson, 2nd wife and one male child.
In 1800 Elizabeth Beeson: 02010-01011 (Unknown if correct Elizabeth; Martha still alive at this time.) (Approx. ages for 1800: Martha 86 yrs, Elizabeth about 40 yrs, Levi about 20 yrs, Rachel about 18 yrs, John about 16 yrs, Asahel about 14 yrs.)
Center Monthly Meeting gives Death date of Martha as 1800,11,27.
On 19 December 1803, Elizabeth asked if she can keep land she now has or will acquire - House votes yes - Senate votes no. Randolph County, North Carolina - "Report of Committee of Prepetitions and Grievances #1".
In 1805 Levi II, brother of Elizabeth, sells 135 acres land of Levi I, recorded in 1807 by Joseph Elliott.
1830 (1770-1780), 1 female 15-20 (1810-1815) - Levi about 50 yrs, sister Rachel about 48 yrs 0 Randolph County, North Carolina census - Levi Beeson 40-50 (1780-1790), 1 female 50-60
1850 Randolph County, North Carolina census - Beeson, Levi 70 idiot (1780) living in household of James Hinshaw born 1803 and family. Levi Beeson classified as idiot. Could this be why Levi I left land only to one grandchild, Levi Beeson?
The Journal of the North Carolina Genealogical Society, Vol XIX, No. 2, May 1993 quotes:
...Beeson, Elizabeth and Azael. Petition of Elizabeth Beeson of Randolph County North Carolina, states that she once had a husband [unnamed] who lived with her several years and bore him four children. He then deserted his family and moved to the state of South Carolina and married another woman. The petitioner has supported the said children for fourteen years through her own care and industry and had acquired some property which greatly assisted her in maintaining her family She further stated that her age, hardships, and infirmities made her unable to transact business as formerly, and she has had difficulty in recovering monies due her because she can not bring suit in her situation. She prays the General Assembly to secure such property as she now has or may hereafter acquire and grant her the privilege in her own name to buy, sell, and sue as if she had never been married, her prayer is granted, and the General Assembly passes an act in response.
If the 1804 petition of Elizabeth is accurate in claiming that she had cared for her children alone for fourteen years, it would mean that Sail had departed sometime before 1790, and it seems from the census information as given that he lost no time in establishing a new household and a new family in South Carolina. On more than one count it seems likely that two of the males in Sail's household in 1800 were children of his first marriage. It will be remembered that although Elizabeth's petition says she bore four children, her father's will names only two Beason grandchildren, and the other two may have been with their father in Spartanburg.
Elizabeth was granted a divorce and the right to handle her own affairs (North Carolina Assembly Acts of 1803-1804). (Notes by Teresa J. Gorge)
Levi Beeson was born about 1780 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He died. Will of Levi I mentions his daughter Elizabeth Beeson and her children, Levi & Rachel Beeson. Possibly the Levi Beeson in the 1850 Randolph County, North Carolina census in household of James Hinshaw. Levi Beeson born 1780 North Carolina "idiot".
Levi I left land to only one grandchild. Could the classification of "Idiot" for this Levi Beeson be the reason?
