Johan Nelson was naturalized before 22 June 1900.5 On 22 June 1900 Johan was a farmer at Spring Prairie Township, Clay County, Minnesota.5 As of 22 June 1900 Johan Nelson and Marie Arneson had 4 living of 4 total children.12 Johan Nelson died on 10 October 1904 at home, rural Hawley, Clay County, Minnesota, at age 40.2 He was buried on 12 October 1904 at Cromwell Cemetery [Lysne], Clay County, Minnesota.7
His obituary appeared at the Hawley Herald and read as follows:
"John Nelson Is Accidently Shot and Killed At His Home In Spring Prairie Township. He Is A Member of the M.W.A. At about 8 o'clock Monday morning, John Nelson, one of Spring Prairie townships most highly esteemed and progressive farmers, was accidently shot and instantly killed. One day last week he loaded his old Zulu shotgun to shoot a hawk that was threatening his chickens, but the hawk disappeared while Mr. Nelson was getting his weapon ready and so he left the gun loaded and placed it on some sacks of grain which stood immediately inside his granary door with the evident purpose of having it near at hand should the hawk come around again. He cautioned his wife not to let the children go near the granary because of the gun.
"No more was said or thought of the gun until Monday morning when the ill-fated mans little daughter, Nettie, who was in a grove a short distance north of the house, heard the report of a gun come from the direction of the granary. The little girls curiosity was aroused and she ran into the house and asked her mother, "What did Papa shoot?" Mrs. Nelson immediately went out to the granary to ascertain what had been shot. She found the body of her husband in a kneeling position before the granary door, and not knowing anything serious had befallen him, she asked what he was looking for, thinking he was trying to look under the granary. Not receiving an answer, she approached nearer and became curious of the dreadful catastrophe. She rushed to a field a short distance east of her home and told William Elcholtze, who was plowing there, the awful news. He ran to the granary and found that the charge from the gun had literally torn off the top of Mr. Nelsons head and that his death must have been instantaneus.
"Only a few moments before the accident the deceased had been in the house with a couple of pails water and had gone out to the granary to do some cleaning up as he expected to remodel the place and get it ready for this years crop. When he reached the granary and opened the door he must while still outside have reached in, caught ahold of the gun by the barrel and pulled it towards him, causing the hammer of the gun to catch in the cloth of the sacks on which it was stored and resulting in its discharge. There was a low board barrier nailed across the bottom of the granary door opening and his body was partly resting on it with one arm inside and one arm out and the gun under him. Fragments of his skull and blood was spattered all over the place and it was one of the most frightful scenes one could imagine.
"Mr. Nelson was in the prime of life, 40 years of age, strong and robust. He was born in Norway but has lived in this country about twenty-one years. He was at one time on the police force at Duluth, Minn. and when he left there 12 years ago he came to Spring Prairie and settled in section 24. Shortly after coming to this county he was married to Miss Marie Arneson who together with 6 small children survive him. The children are all girls, the oldest 10 years and the youngest 8 months.
"The deceased stood high in his community, having held many positions of honor as gifts from his neighbors. At the time of his sudden departure he was president of the Cromwell and Spring Prairie total abstinence society. He was also a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge of Hawley and carried $1,000 of life insurance in the order. And surmounting all this he was a kind husband and father, and the grief of the prostrate widow and the mourning children cannot be told in words. He was also a christian man.
"The funeral was held Wednesday and the remains buried in the Cromwell cemetery. Rev. S.G. Hauge officiated and spoke comforting words to the sorrowing and afflicted. The pallbearers were members of the M.W.A."7

He left a will.13 His estate was probated on 10 February 1906 at Clay County, Minnesota. His expenses were administered by Louis Quam. He died testate, with the residue consisting of real and personal property in Clay County: NE1/4 of Section 24 in Township 140, Range 46, and property described in inventory. Heirs were "Mary Nelson Widow of said Deceased age 34 years, Nettie Nelson daughter age 9 years Jennie Nelson daughter age 8 years, Berghild Nelson daughter age 7 years, Johanna Nelson daughter age 5 years Esther Nelson daughter age 4 years, Gertie Nelson daughter, age nine 9 months." Mary Nelson, widow, was assigned an undivided 1/3 interest in the fee thereof and all the personal property, and the daughters each an individual 1/9 interest in the fee thereof.13

The newspaper clippings you can put into a scrapbook if you like. Some of the pictures didn't copy too well. I've also included stories told me by my sisters when they were young. Also copies of letters I've received from Norway. Also pictures I have extra copies of. I haven't been able to get too much information as yet on Johan Nelsons side of the family (Esthers father) There is a question wheather or not he changed his name when he came to America. Hope to do more research on him this winter. He was born near Honefos, Norway. There are distant relatives of his living there now. I'll include their addresses as I understand your dad may go there.

Her obituary appeared at Clay County, Minnesota, and read as follows:

"The death of Mrs. Marie Nelson of Lysne church, town of Cromwell, did not come unexpectedly, as she had been in poor health for many years. As far as age is concerned she was yet a woman in the prime of life, being only 47 years old. But her physical breakdown dates back 12 years when her husband, Mr. John Nelson, was accidentally shot, and she was left alone with six small children. Since that time her health has been impaired, the shock was more than she could bear. However she has all these years been able to keep her family together on the farm which their loving father left them.
"She came from Kongsvinger, Norway, 25 years ago and was married to John Nelson Sept. 4 1893. Mr. Nelson was a strong man and a splendid provider, and after his sudden death the struggle for existence for the widowed mother with six little girls became very severe.
"It was her great consolation during the last days of her life to know that she had been permitted to live long enough to see her girls grow up to womanhood and become old enough to take care of themselves.
"Deceased was a good mother and a devout christian and in spite of her many adversities in life was satisfied with her lot, confiding in the lord.
She was buried from her home and Lysne church on Nov. 14 [written in]. The church was appropriately decorated and was filled with sorrowing friends. Many beautiful flowers covered the casket.
"Rev. S.G. Hauge and Rev. Ole Aune officiating [sic] at the funeral.
Left to mourn her loss are her aged mother, Mrs. Arneson, sisters, viz. Mrs. Amdrose [sic] Sauer and Mrs. Louis Quam, and 6 daughters all of whom were home and present at the funeral.
"Peace with your ashes, Blessed be your memory."15

Kjetil Olson Moen is believed to belong to Y-DNA haplogroup I-L22 (details to come). "Y-DNA Haplogroup I represents nearly one-fifth of the population of Europe. It can be found in the majority of present-day European populations; the greatest density to be found in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Norway, Sweden, Serbia, Sardinia, Denmark and Germany. The haplogroup is almost non-existent outside of Europe or Asia Minor, suggesting that it arose in Europe. [...] There is a good possibility that there was a large extinction in our ancestors 5000 years after the founding of I - haplogroup.

Today, the genetic tree of humanity indicates there were only 8 males living at that time who were contributors do ALL of today's I-haplogroup population

The 8 contributing males living 5000 years after the founding of I-haplogroup were certainly not the total population of living I-haplogroup males of that time. But this suggests how precarious that haplogroup was for a long period of its early existence. [...] I1d-L22 was probably born early in the history of I1 in the very south of Scandinavia or in the very north of Germany --- Baltic coast, Schleswig or Jutland? The origin of this halogroup is assumed to be located in the province of Schleswig* on the German/Danish border." (https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/i-1d/about/results).3 He was born in 1856 at Fyresdal, Telemark, Norway.2 Census data from 1900 indicate Kjetil Olson Moen was born in August 1859 at Norway.4 In 1878 Kjetil Olson Moen married Tone Kjetilsdtr Hagajordet 3d, daughter of Kjetil Ormson Hagajordet 2a and Gunvor Olavsdtr Rinden, at Norway.2 Kjetil Olson Moen and Tone Kjetilsdtr Hagajordet 3d were divorced on 28 September 1891 at Clay County, Minnesota. The license had been granted the previous day and they were married by a justice of the peace. The witnesses were Ole T. Targeson and R. C. Ha--; P. Odegaard seems to have been the justice of the peace. The marriage was not destined for success. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, Kittel Olson left or was kicked out, whereupon his wife reverted to the surname Muhle, changed his children's surname to Muhle as well, and generally obliterated his memory.5,4,6 As of before 4 June 1900, Kjetil Olson Moen had taken out naturalization papers (Peterzen, Conrad, ed.. Research Notes

     Todd says:
I’m starting with Konrad’s grandfather Denzil Moen (1906-81), partly because I don’t know which daughter of his is Konrad’s mother, and partly because I have to think he has at least that much right! I mean the man didn’t die until 1981. Anyway, Denzil married a woman named Pearl Goldie Gates, whose parents he lists as George Washington Gates and Eveline Alice Hart, so I don’t think there’s likely to be any Norwegian blood there (nor does the tree he has for them show any).

Anyway, the censuses give Denzil’s parents as follows:

1910 (Pataha, Garfield, Washington):
Oley, Moen, 26 (MN), married 5 years, miller (flour mill); parents born in Norway
Oley, Nina, 23 (ID), married 5 years; father born in CO, mother in OR

1920 (La Crosse, Whitman, Washington):
Moen, Ole C, 36 (MN), miller (flour mill), parents born in Norway
Moen, Nina A, 31 (ID), wife, housewife (at home); father born in NV, mother in OR

1930 (La Crosse, Whitman, Washington):
Moen, Oley, 46 (MN), carpenter (house), married at 23; parents born in Norway
Moen, Nina, 42 (ID), wife, married at 17; father born in NV, mother in OR

So, they appear to have gotten married around 1905.

A birth record for Denzil’s as yet unnamed younger brother, Sylvan, born 29 Oct 1916, tells us the following about their parents:

Father: Oley C Moen, 33 (MN), flour miller, resident of Pataha, Garfield, WA
Mother: Nina Gustin, 29 (ID), hswf, same residence

So, we have a maiden name for the mother! Nina Gustin was enumerated twice in the 1900 census. The first time was on 6 Jun 1900, when her mother and siblings were visiting Nina’s mother’s married younger sister in Cornwall, Latah, Idaho:

Harris, E H, 28 (Apr 1872; NE); parents born in NY
Harris, E B, 21 (Feb 1879; ID), wife; father born in MO, mother in OR
Harris, L F, 2 (Aug 1897; MT), daughter; father born in NE, mother in ID
Harris, N A, 3 mos (Feb 1900; ID), daughter; father born in NE, mother in ID
Gustin, M F, 30 (Oct 1869; OR), married sister-in-law; father born in MO, mother in OR [an Ancestry user, thoot, has annotated this Minnie Francis Christie]
Gustin, N A, 12 (Jan 1888; ID), cousin [sic = niece]; father born in NV, mother in OR [thoot has annotated this Nina Augusta Gustin]
Gustin, G F, 7 (Jun 1892; ID), cousin [sic]; father born in NV, mother in OR [thoot has annotated this George Floyd Gustin]
Gustin, C E, 2 (Apr 1898; OR), cousin [sic]; father born in NV, mother in OR [thoot has annotated this Claude Elwood Gustin]
Christie, Albace, 19 (Jan 1881; ID), single sister-in-law; father born in MO, mother in OR
Christie, E F, 51 (Jan 1849; OR), widowed mother-in-law; father born in KY, mother in MO [thoot has annotated this Elizabeth Frances Christie]

The second enumeration was after they returned home to Columbia Center, Garfield, Washington:

Gustin, James W, 34 (Oct 1865; NV), married 12 years, woodchopper; father born in OH, mother in Canada (English)
Gustin, Minnie F, 30 (Oct 1869; ID), married 12 years; father born in MO, mother in OR
Gustin, Mina G [sic], 12 (Jan 1888; ID); father born in NV, mother in OR
Gustin, George F, 8 (Jun 1891; ID); father born in NV, mother in OR
Gustin, Claude E, 2 (Apr 1898; OR); father born in NV, mother in OR

So, it doesn’t look like James Gustin or Minnie (Christie) Gustin were Norwegian. Konrad’s tree traces both of their ancestry back to the late eighteenth century without making it across the Atlantic, and I don’t see any reason to question that.

So, that brings us back to Konrad’s great-grandfather Oley Charles Moen (1883-1954). His World War I draft registration card , dated 12 Sep 1918, identifies him as Oley C Moen, 35 (b. 3 May 1883), a miller, home address, Pomeroy, Garfield, WA, married to Nina A Moen. His World War II draft registration card identifies him as Oley Charles Moen, born 3 May 1883 in Moorhead, MN, and residing in Seattle, King, WA.

The 1900 census for Townships 8, 9, and 10, Ravalli, Montana, tells us:

Moen, Andrew O, 36 (Dec 1863; Norway), married 8 years, immigrated 1864, 35 or 36 years in US (one written over the other, 35 is written darker), farm laborer
Moen, Tonie, 40 (Apr 1860; Norway), married 8 years, 6 children living of 6, immigration date and length of time in US unknown
Moen, Ole, 17 (Apr 1883; Norway [sic]), single step-son, immigration date and time in US unknown, farm laborer,
Moen, Sena, 14 (Mar 1886; MN), step-daughter
Moen, Tea O, 11 (May 1889; MN), step-daughter
Moen, Anna, 8 (Apr 1892; MN), daughter
Moen, Jessie, 5 (May 1895; SD), daughter
Moen, Lynda, 11 mos. (Jun 1899; MT), daughter
Gunwer, Hageora, 75 (Mar 1825; Norway), widowed mother-in-law
Bentley, Carlie S, 23 (Sep 1876; NC), single servant, parents born in NC
Everyone’s parents except the servant’s were born in Norway.

The section of the Minnesota territorial census of 1885 for Cosmos, Meeker County, which Konrad cites, does not seem to me to be right. The wife, “T Olson,” is already 36. There is a son named Ole, but he is already 18 (or maybe 10), when he should be 2. There is, however, a two-year-old daughter named Mary. It just doesn’t fit.

The Minnesota territorial census of 1875 for Odin, Watonwan County, that Konrad cites, seems even less likely to be right. Kittle Olson, 30, is living with Helge Olson, 30 and three children. [DNA has disproved this theory] This might be your Kittel Olson Moen age 6 on the 1865 census: This is from
Telemark, Hiterdal.parish, farm: Moen

His parents:
1256 21 1 Ole Haralds. Husfader Gaardbruger og Selveier g 40 m Hiterdals
Prgj. 1 1 1 1/8 1/2
1257 22 Liv Kittilsd. hans Kone g 38 k Hiterdals Prgj.
Older sister
1258 23 Margit Olsd. Deres Barn ug 12 k Hiterdals Prgj.
As his mother's father is named Kittil, I would assume that here Kittil is
the second son. Harald- possibly the name of the first son may be working
elsewhere as a "hired man" or he may have died.
1259 24 Kittil Ols. Deres Barn ug 6 m Hiterdals Prgj.

"Fire Bug Curse - a certain character still living in Glyndon in 1945 is strongly suspected of being the man hired by the feuding factions of the Wet & Drys - to burn establishment after establishment which sounded the death-knell of Glyndon as a city

The Burning Era must have been between 1887 & 1893 because Jim Shea's store west across the street from Shea Hotel was destroyed after 1887 as I have a bill of sale of goods bought at Jim Shea store 1887
"Arsonist" very likely bribed by "Big Bugs" who wanted Moorhead for the county seat
When elevator, machine sheds & other buildings burn - Merchants become discouraged and began moving away - 'tis said "hoisted their buildings on flat cars & moved to Barnesville - The Great Northern Shops were taken away
"Kjetil Odden" - a pseudonym clamped on this non-Scandinavian character was one of the firebugs - tried to escape & was caught in slough near Moorhead by sheriff & posse. Would not talk - clamped mouth shut - took poison. His father a regular devil too - The name was put on by Norwegian settlers says Guro Muhle"

John Muhle appears in a group photo of the Guro Muhle family. He also went by the nickname of Johnny. He was born on 18 October 1899 at Minnesota.1,2,3,4,5
On 24 April 1914 Orabel noted, "Today is the last day of English school in Grover school house and I guess everybody is going except Adela and Ma. Signe Skrei, Annie Nellie O, and Targe came in, and Florence and Nellie started before we did. Stella finished my dress made from the cloth (brownish tannish greyish) I got from Alpha and Dora. I also got Tango colored buttons and Tie. I made a dandy dress. The audience consisted of Mrs. Torjus Langlie, Emma and Clara Langlie, Mrs. Claribel Richards and Margaret and Alice. Claribel and Harold Richards (Bil and Caries children) Mrs. Ole Midgarden Signe Skrei, Mrs. Wm Fuchs, Mrs. Tweton, Clarence and baby Wilfred he walks Kenneth and girl baby clarise?)--Huldah Grover Julia Clemenson, Gina Muhle, Emma Fuchs, Annie Skrie, Nellie Olson and Stella, Eva Florence and I. Also Obert and George Tweton. The program was rather limited as the teacher Miss Ann Jenkins expressed it, but she had been troubled with neuralgia all week so--the other day we received booklets with the program announced it as being the opening of the Corn Club.Obert Grover was president and Gladys Secretary. They behaved as if in a real meeting used words of vote, adjourn, second the motion, aye and Nay majority etc. They sang "Sewing the Seed" then a short dialogue was given, then a song or two, a reading from a paper by Ann Jenkins and then the last song. Afterwards all us kids played ball. Mrs. Richards, Mrs. Fuchs and Mrs. Tweton, Gina M. and Margaret are stood a Tweton's corner gossipping. Aunt Joraand drove with "Pearl" who acted balky. I forgot to write down school childrens naes: Tillie and Helen Fuchs, Glaydys and Henry Tweton, Claribel Richards, Milla Albin, Julia and Lilja Amundson, Walter Langlie (he finished 8th grade) Ivy, Marion, Elvina and Eugene Grover, Johnnie Muhlie, George Grosse Milo, Targe Skrie, (Norman did not partake in program because he was absent because of sickness this last week)."6
On 27 May 1914 "In the morning when we get up, why at first a person feels tired andsulky but after you are thoroughly awakened, a person feels the thrill of the fresh cool air of dawn The birds twitter in the trees, especially it seems by the elm on the north side. The dew is on the grass and a mist hangs o'er the fields and woods. We hurried and milked a few cows--and saw that the horses were ready then hurried in for breakfast. Stella was frying pancakes and we were soon at them. We got started quite late so we had to drive rather fast in order to be at the school at eight for Geometry. We got there on time and were the first rig at the barn. The Geometry was hard alright I doubt if I'll pass. After the test Eva and Annie set of for home walking, and they got a ride from Barnes Corner and down to the wood in Morrows auto.
I was idle this afternoon, then I took English Grammar Exam.
Men hauled Potatoes from Watts today also I guess pap had Maud and Lucy. Spink was used before planter.
Harriett Stone a mission worker rather middle aged was here this evening. She was fond of nature and music. Her aim was to have a entertainment in the church. She sang a little for us also. She is not rich. She does not pronounce the R when speaking and she is very eloquent 50¢ from Ma for--25 for picnic and 25 for a gift for Miss Brecht that class donates.
Emma Fuchs took Tillie & Helen, Milla Amundson with pony and Johnnie Muhle and George Grosse rode in byc. They took examinations. Tillie, Helen and Milla rode ome with us. Helen especially was mortally afraid of some genuine gypsy that camped in the outskirts of Glyndon. The women were dressed in gathered dresses mostly red. A fortune teller, I believe, came from the field, she was very pretty; dressed like a gypsy and had many bracelets. I believe that's the first time I seen Gypsies."7
On 28 May 1914 ""We took Final English II test, I got 83 so I am alright. We took along a box of eggs @ 16¢. We got 3 union summer suits and I also bought some snuff and spearhead tobacco for pa. Eggs were not able to pay for all though. At noon, around two o'clock, Vurl Leach told Miss Upson that a freight train was wrecked on the N.P. east of the depot. We all went to the windows and looked. A car or two were thrown over--and the foremost engine was off the track and looked as if it would tip. Smoke was issuing from its stack. There was also an engine in the middle part of train and a pusher.
[...]
Well tomorrow is the last and also a picnic day, and a while ago the rain just beat down. It certainly is funny that a picnic seems to draw rain. Its still drizzling I see.
We came or rather started home from Glyndon at 3'oclock today. Milla Amundson, Johnnie Muhle, George Gross and Helen Fuchs were also there today to take examinations. They didn't ride with us though. Polly is not yet used for work. My but the leaves or very thick on the trees this summer, certainly fine foliage. The Ferns are abundant over in the woods and wafts of fresh, moist air come in thru the window now as I sit and write by the west window."8 He was confirmed on 10 October 1915 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Clay County, Minnesota.9,10 In January 1920 John was a farmer.4 On 18 October 1929 John Muhle married Sylvia Myers.2
John Muhle was named an heir in the will of his uncle Chester G. Muhle dated 10 September 1932 at Clay County, Minnesota.11
John Muhle was invited to the wedding of Dolores Mae Lamb and Wayne Vincent Huebner on 25 June 1949 at the Glyndon Lutheran Church, Glyndon, Clay County, Minnesota, but apparently did not attend.12,2,13,14,15

Tarje Muhle was born on 4 July 1849 at Skafsaa, Telemark, Norway.2,1,3,4,5 He was born in 1850.6

Some of the Telemark pioneers stayed in Houston County rather than venturing on to the Red River Valley with Tarje Muhle and the others. Some of their descendants now live in Black Hammer and Yucatan townships, Houston County. The Eiken family of Fyresdal, for example, left Norway in 1852 on the sailing ship Rukan. The voyage took nine weeks, and there was much sickness, with several burials at sea. The Jore family of Vraadal/Kviteseid/Fyresdal (with links to Rui and Kragnes) emigrated in 1853 and 1869; some went "the common" route via Quebec, Milwaukee, Koshkonong WI, to Houston County. Some families, including the Jores and Kragnesses, stayed in Koshkonong for a year. The Morkens, who came in 1867, took 7 weeks and a day from Shien to Quebec, and their first home in Yucatan Township was a sod house. (Brevig family, Egland, Flatten, Gaustad, Halversen-Brokke, Hegland, Tollef Johnson, Jore, Knutson, Kragness, Lee-Brokke, Lonnegrav, Morken, Maynard Nelson, Nerison-Strand, John A. Peterson, Sammy Peterson, Runningen, Sanden, Sinnes, Skree, Stigansjord, Rolf T. Storlie, Tweeten, Vathing, Ystesund) (Houston Huebners came from Germany c. 1867!).7
On 22 June 1870, Tarje Muhle took out naturalization papers at Douglas County, Minnesota, He stated that he "first arrived in the United States on or about the 1st day of June in the year A.D. 1865" and renounced allegiance to the King of Sweden and Norway. He signed with an X.8
Tarje Muhle was naturalized on 2 April 1878 at Clay County, Minnesota.9 On 21 December 1879 Tarje Muhle married his cousin Guro Olasdatter Rue, daughter of Olaf Rue and Jorand Johnsdatter, at the school house, Clay County, Minnesota. The building they were married in was a log structure that served as church and Moland Township town hall as well as a school.3,4,5,10 Tarje Muhle and Guro Olasdatter Rue were also reported married on 23 December 1879 at Clay County, Minnesota.1 In 1880 Tarje farmed at Moland Township, Clay County, Minnesota.11 Tarje Muhle and Guro Olasdatter Rue's first child, Gustave, was born on 4 July 1880 at Minnesota.12,2,1,13,14,15 Their second child, Olaus, was born on 6 April 1882 at Minnesota.16,2,1,17,18,13,19,20 Their third child, Oscar, was born on 4 May 1884 at Minnesota.2,1,21,13 Tarje Muhle became the godfather at Oskar Olaus Tveiten's christening on 23 October 1887 at the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran congregation, Clay County, Minnesota.22 Their fourth child, Oscar, was born on 11 May 1888 at on the homestead along the Buffalo River, Moland Township, Clay County, Minnesota.23 Tarje Muhle was incorrectly reported as dying in 1895 at Minnesota.2,13,24 He died of consumption, age 46 [per Moland death reg] on 22 October 1896 at Moland Township, Clay County, Minnesota, at age 47.25,1,26 He was buried at Concordia Cemetery, Clay County, Minnesota.13 According to a family tree of the Muhles, Tarje Muhle and Guro Olasdatter Rue had seven children.1 Tarje Muhle was incorrectly reported as dying of a sickness on 21 September 1897.4,5,27

Margaret Forrest1

Last Edited10 Aug 2023
Margaret Forrest appears in a group photo of what is thought may be the family of David Lamb and Margaret Forrest (the children shown make it somewhat questionable--which of the children are they?). Census data from Most likely she was the Margaret Forrest christened in February 1848 in Kirriemuir, daughter of George Forrest and Ann Milne indicate Margaret Forrest was born circa 1850 at Parish of Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland.1,2,3 On 8 June 1870 Margaret Forrest married David Lamb, son of John Lamb and Elizabeth Deuchar, at Parish of Carmyllie, Forfarshire, Scotland.1,4,2 In 1901 Margaret was housekeeper at Ferryden Dairy, Craig, Forfarshire, Scotland.5

Research Notes

Either a Margaret (Forrest) Lamb or a Margaret (Lamb) Forrest died in Dun in 1932 at the age of 81. Presumably, this was the wife of David Lamb (b. 1838) and mother of the original brood. The place name Dun got my attention, because Diane’s Ancestry tree shows Margaret’s daughter Margaret Forrest Lamb as having had an illegitimate son named Herbert on 6 Mar 1910, and the only Herbert Lamb (b. 1910) I could find through Scotland’s People was born in Dun. It’s weird, though, because I don’t find a Herbert Lamb aged from zero to one anywhere in Scotland in the 1911 census. I also don’t find a death for one in 1910 or 1911. Perhaps he was given up for adoption? Or perhaps Margaret emigrated? The only Margaret Lamb of the right approximate age recorded in Angus in 1911 was 29 and living in Dundee/St Andrew. There was no Herbert in the same household.
