He came to this country with his parents in 1864--This brings us back to Civil War days when this country was torn by that terrible conflict which made it weak and far from inviting to the thousands coming her from foreign shores. It was a crucial period in our history, as we think of a possibility of defear for the north, or a stalemate which would have left this country as a second or third class power for ages to come.
The family came to Winisheck county and remained there until 1877 when they came here and settled on a farm in Spring Prairie township, and were among the very first settlers in this entire community.
Fifty four years ago he was married to Sophie Arneson who survives him. They lived on their farm in Spring Prairie until seven years ago, when they moved into Hawley where they have had their home ever since. Mr. Sauer was one of the most congenial personalities we have ever met. The constant smile on his kind countenance, under all circumstances, in good days and evil days, was so outstanding that any one coming in contact with him couldn't help but notice it, and be impressed thereby. His was a life of peace and good will to all. This his blessed contribution to us all brought balm and healing into many a troubled and restless soul, and shall remain as a lasting monument, far greater than any material possession, to his blessed memory.
No children were born to this union, and besides his wife, he is survived by two sisters and five brothers: Mrs. Leif Sem and Belle Sauer, both of Hawley; the brothers are: James of Brainerd and Sam of Los Angeles, California; Andrew Sauer of Fargo and Ole and John of Hawley.
Funeral services were held from Lysne church, Wednesday afternoon, July 14. Rev. S.G. Hauge officiating. The Lysne church choir assisting with Eunice Brunsvold serving as organist. A large audience was present to bid farewell to this good neighbor and esteemed citizen.
The floral offerings were large and several memoriams gifts were presented.

Lewis N. Quam1,2

From an early Clay County atlas in possession of Wayne and Dolores (Lamb) Huebner.
Lewis N. Quam was born on 25 October 1854 at Owatonna, Steele County, Minnesota.4 He was born in 1856 at near Owatonna, Minnesota.5 Census data from to Norwegian parents indicate Lewis N. Quam was born circa 1858 at Minnesota.1,2 In 1885 Lewis N. Quam married Karen Arneson, daughter of Arne Arnesen Askehuset Nedre Lier and Maren Andersdatter Gusterudlien, at Glyndon, Clay County, Minnesota.6,4,2,5
Lewis N. Quam witnessed the marriage of Marie Arneson and Johan Nelson on 4 September 1893 at home of Rev. A. Offtedahl, Spring Prairie township, Clay County, Minnesota.7,6,8,9
Lewis N. Quam was named executor in the will of administrator Johan Nelson.10 On 2 February 1920 Lewis farmed at Spring Prairie township, Clay County, Minnesota, on his own mortgaged land.1 He became a widower when his wife Karen Arneson died on 3 April 1925 at Spring Prairie Township, Clay County, Minnesota.4,11 Lewis N. Quam attended the funeral of Karen Arneson on 6 April 1925 at the parlor and Zion Church, Spring Prairie Township, Clay County, Minnesota.12 Lewis N. Quam died after being hit by a train while crossing the railroad tracks on a visit to his daughters on 15 January 1932 at the hospital, Morris, Stevens County, Minnesota.4,13,14 The funeral for Lewis N. Quam was held on 18 January 1932 at "the old homestead" and "the Spring Prairie Church" with Rev. Hauge and Rev. Runsoolf officiating. The Nelson sisters of Cromwell and other members of the Lysne Church Choir sang, as did members of the Glyndon Lutheran church.13 He was buried on 18 January 1932 at Riverside Cemetery, Glyndon, Clay County, Minnesota.4,13
His obituary appeared and read as follows:
"The sudden death of Lewis N. Quam, prominent pioneer farmer of Spring Prairie, removes from our midst an outstanding landmark.
"He has lived in our neighborhood for the past 50 years, and has seen this community develop from its tiny infancy away back in the early eighties. Mr. Quam had a wide circle of acquaintances in this community, not so much because he was an early settler, but more so because of his interesting personality, and his social temperment. He was a man of thought and was well able to express himself on the questions of the day. His opportunities for acquiring an education in the school room were indeed limited, as was the case of most of the early settlers, but this lack of opportunity was amply substituted for by his reading and interest in the affairs of the day.
"He was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Congregation and sought to lead his large family in the paths of rightousness. On his recent visit to Morris, Minn. where two of his daughters live, he was crossing the railroad tracks where he was struck by a train and died without regaining conciousness. This happened last Friday afternoon, Jan 15. He died at the hospital of that city that same afternoon at the age of 75.
"He was born in Steele County, Minn. Oct 25, 1856, and came to Spring Prairie in the spring of 1882, where he homesteaded land and where he had his home all these 50 years. In 1885 he wed Carrie Arneson who died 7 years ago. To this union were born 14 children, 12 of whom are living and they were all present at the funeral, which took place from the old homestead, and the Spring Prairie Church Monday afternoon, Jan. 18th. Rev. Hauge and Rev. Runsoolf of Glyndon officiating. The Nelson sisters of Cromwell assisted by other members of Lysne Chruch Choir, and a group of the Glyndon Luthern Church choir rendered several selections during the funeral service.
"The floral offerings were large, a token of honor to the memory of this pioneer citizen, who had given his bit his all, to to help build his common wealth.
"Burial took place at the family lot on the Riverside cemetery north of Glyndon, where mother and other members of the family rest.
"Acting as pallbearers were his six sons; Roy, Arthur, Harry, Lewis, Morrel and Andrew.
"He is survived by the following 12 children; Mrs. Carl Dolva, Morris Minn., Mrs. Charles Rotramel, Morris, Minn., Mrs. Julous Brown, Laverne, Minn., Harry, Roy, Morril, and Gladys of Moorhead, Mrs. Fred Perkins, Arthur, Andrew, Godeo, and Lew of Spring Prairie."13
