Ottilia Hübner was born on 22 June 1855 at Province of Posen, Kingdom of Prussia.3 She was baptized on 1 July 1855 at Połajewo, Province of Posen, Kingdom of Prussia. Godparents: Wilh. Schnigler, Schullehrer [schoolteacher], Luise Hinz geb. Grawunder.4,5 Census data from 1880 indicate Ottilia Hübner was born circa 1855 at Prussia.2 Linda Kuehn Veillet offers the birthdate on 20 June 1857 at Posenia, Prussia, but points out that this would have Ottilia and her brother (or half-brother) Theodore born only a few days apart.1,6,7,8,9,10,11 She was Catholic. She told her children that while growing up in Prussia, she had to learn to read and write (and presumably speak) Polish in order to study Catholicism.12
On 1 January 1871 the German Empire (Deutsches Reich) was established, uniting Prussia with the south German states (apart from Austria, which was part of Austria-Hungary). She became the godmother at Marianna Kłos's christening on 8 September 1874 at Połajewo, Kreis Obornik, Province of Posen, the German Empire.13 Ottilia Hübner and Benedikt Bauer's first child, Anthony, was born in 1875.6 On 14 February 1876 Ottilia Hübner married Benedikt Bauer, son of Andreas Bauer and Josefa Endres, at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Peter and Cathie Henricks or Henrichs were the witnesses and Catholic minister P. M. Stukenkemper performed the ceremony.14,1,15,16 Their second child, Elizabeth, was born on 3 September 1877 at Minnesota.17,1 Their third child, Mary, was born on 14 September 1879 at Minnesota.18,1 Their fourth child, Peter, was born on 13 July 1881 at Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota.1,6,11 Ottilia Hübner was widowed when her husband Benedikt Bauer died on 23 June 1882 at Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.19,6,20 Ottilia Hübner married second Alois Joseph Schwengle, son of Alois J. Schwengle and Theresa Schmatz, on 30 October 1882 at (book 20, 1881-3), Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The witnesses were Theodor Hübner and Maria Kaiser jr. The Catholic minister did not sign.1,8,21,22
Ottilia Hübner witnessed the marriage of Amelia Schandel and Theodore J. Benedikt Bauer
Benedikt Bauer was Catholic.3 He was born on 3 November 1839 at Rosshaupten bein Füssen, Baden, Germany. The 1880 census listed him as 41, and his parents as born in Baden. Rosshaupten is said to be at the foot of the Alps.4,5,1 He was christened on 3 November 1839 at Rosshaupten bein Füssen, Baden.6,1 He was incorrectly reported as born in 1840.7 At Germany Benedikt Bauer was a "brewmeister," according to family tradition.8 Benedikt Bauer and Ottilia Hübner's first child, Anthony, was born in 1875.9 On 14 February 1876 Benedikt Bauer married Ottilia Hübner, daughter of Ferdinand Hübner and Marie Krenz, at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Peter and Cathie Henricks or Henrichs were the witnesses and Catholic minister P. M. Stukenkemper performed the ceremony.4,2,10,11 Their second child, Elizabeth, was born on 3 September 1877 at Minnesota.12,2

The Midwestern grasshopper plague of the 1870s didn't bypass Wright County. "Slight locust invasions were reported in 1868, 1871 and 1872.
"Wright county was visited again, however, in 1873, when a new horde made its appearance. Although they deposited many eggs here, the next winter, quite severe, killed most of them so that few hoppers were seen in the spring of 1874. They showed up to some extent in 1876 and 1877 but it was in 1878 that the greatest damage was done.
"That year they came in such hordes in the month of April that everyone almost gave up in despair. It was no use to plant, men argued, and nearly all agreed. A day was set aside for prayer, however, in the hope that a divine and kindly providence might intervene. Providence must have heeded their petitions, for the night after the prayer observance a killing frost came that froze every grasshopper as stiff and solid as a stone."13

Numerous German immigrants settled in Wright County and became the second-largest immigrant group after the Swedes. Frankfort and Franklin became predominantly German.14
Their third child, Mary, was born on 14 September 1879 at Minnesota.15,2 On 3 June 1880 Benedikt farmed at dwelling #28, Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.4 Their fourth child, Peter, was born on 13 July 1881 at Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota.2,9,16 Benedikt Bauer died of consumption or, per Greenwood County deaths, a "Liver Complaint," on 23 June 1882 at Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota, at age 42.17,9,18

James Anderson

M, b. circa 1785?
Last Edited5 Mar 2021
James Anderson is estimated to have been born perhaps circa 1785? On 9 November 1815 James Anderson married Isabel Scott, daughter of John Scott and Elspet Hogg, at Parish of Monikie, Forfarshire, Scotland. According to the parish register, "James Anderson and Isabel Scott both in this Parish were married."1,2 In 1818 James was a weaver at Douny Keen, Parish of Monikie, Forfarshire, Scotland.3

Research Notes

Possible parents James Anderson & Elizt. Walker (Chr. 11 jun 1780).4 May be the same person as 5320, son of James A & Barbara Hogg.4 If he is the same as James Anderson of New Downie, in 1801 he gave a subscription to the Poor Fund. However, it is probably a different James, as James Anderson of N. Downie gave 18s seat rent to the church in 1821.5
