Census data indicate Josie Lamb was born in July 1883 at Minnesota.2 On 29 May 1902 Josie Lamb married Arthur Marion Baker. According to Cooks & Kin, Fred Lamb "told of attending Josie Baker's wedding dance in Jim Vannet's barn. The music was two fiddlers and a xylophone. He said, 'They sure could play.'" Most likely this refers to Josie Lamb's marriage to Joe Baker.3,4 Josie Lamb died in 1928.5,6 She was incorrectly reported as dying in May 1902.1 She was buried at the Barnesville city cemetery, Barnesville, Clay County, Minnesota.7

David Vannet was christened on 2 August 1848 at Parish of St. Vigeans, Forfarshire, Scotland.3 On 9 June 1871 David Vannet married Mary Lamb, daughter of John Lamb and Elizabeth Deuchar, at Parish of Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland.3

The first settlers arrived in Alliance Township in 1879, when it was "nothing but a barren prairie dotted with heaps of buffalo bones, and an occasional slough or creek. There was not a tree to mar the bleakness of that plain and yet those pioneers saw possibilities in a homestead here.
"To the west, about 2-1/2 miles from where the town of Baker now stands, was a small lake filled with rushes, where wild geese nested, and in the distance one could see the scrubby growth of brush along the Buffalo River. North and east was what was known as the Scotch settlement, with the Lambs, Johnsons, Stewarts, Vannetts, William Thompsons, and farther east the Henrys."4

"In 1880, only three years after the first pioneers began to settle Elkton Township in Clay County, several members of a farming area known as "Little Scotland" decided it was time to begin religious instruction.
William Thompson, along with several friends, approached David Vannet to find a building large enough to accommodate those who wanted to worship. Vannet suggested the railroad section house located in the southeast quarter of sction 27, several miles south of what is now the community of Downer.
As Thompson recalled some 34 years later, it was probably the only Sunmday School services for miles around. And members made a determined effort to attend. Abraham Henry and his family had to cross a creek by boat, or "ferry" as Thompson fondly recalled it, before walking two miles to reach the section house.
Religious education continued in the section house for some two years, with David Vannet acting as superintendent. Then the section boss was transferred to Barnesville, and a new location had to be found. However, in 1881 a day schoolhouse was built on section 18, about two miles west of Downer. But the new location proved too far for some to attend, and membership dwindled. Services were disrupted for six months, until the day school teacher, 15 year-old Nellie Kittredge of Glyndon, persuaded Thompson to begin teaching Sunday School once more."5
In 1880 David was a railroad laborer at Clay County, Minnesota.6
David Vannet was naturalized before 1900.7 He died before 1900.8 In June 1900 David was a road master at Village of Fertile, Polk County, Minnesota.7

North and east was what was known as the Scotch settlement, with the Lambs, Johnsons, Stewarts, Vannetts, William Thompsons, and farther east the Henrys."10

At Clay County, Minnesota, According to church records, "The people having assembled in the school house, Rev. John Irwin, Presbyterian missionary preached. In checking our death records here in Otter Tail County I did locate the people we spoke of. I will include for you the information provided by each one. You will notice that the early record for James provides little information but this is very common with these early records especially those from the St. Hospital as little information may have been given to them.

The following is the address to write to at the St. Hospital for copies of their medical records for these two people. Mention the dates they died. I found these records to be most helpful! Linda Winter, Records Department, Fergus Falls State Hospital, Fergus Falls, MN 56537.

Paul Andreas Huebner in his coffin (Photo scanned at 2002 Huebner reunion.)
Paul Andreas Huebner was born on 4 January 1901 at North Dakota.1,2,3 He appears in a group photo of Huebner, Nelson children and their classmates between 1909 and 1910 at the District 116 school, Clay County, Minnesota. He appears in a group photo of the younger Huebner boys circa 1914?. He was incorrectly reported as dying on 14 December 1914.4,5 He died on 15 December 1914 at the ravine at the corner of Second Ave. and Ninth St. north, Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota, at age 13.6,7,8 He was buried on 21 December 1914 at Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota.6,9 He was incorrectly reported as dying was supposedly murdered on his way to high school on 23 December 1914 at Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota.10,11
His obituary appeared on 23 December 1914 at the Moorhead Citizen, Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota, and read as follows:
partly as follows: "Paul Huebner, a 14 year old school boy, was frozen to death Tuesday night of last week and his body was found Wednesday morning at the bottom of the ravine at the corner of Second avenue and Ninth street north.
"The body was discovered shortly before 9 o'clock by two boys who were on their way to the Third ward school. Just after the boys found the body Deputy Sheriff A.G. Whaley came along on his way down town. Mr. Whaley notified Coroner C.G. Vincent by 'phone and together with the police, remained with the body until the coroner arrived and ordered the remains removed to Beck & Morrow's morgue.
"The body of the young lad lay face up and there was nothing to give a hint of the cause of the tragedy. The boy's cap was on his head, pushed back a trifle; his left hand was in his overcoat pocket and one of his school books under his arm. His right arm was extended but there was no indication of a struggle or of any movement after he fell. It is possible that he may have started to cut across the ravine and fallen and hurt himself.
"The lad is a son of Theodore Huebner, a farmer who lives on Section 2 of Spring Prairie Township. About three weeks ago Paul began boarding with Henry Carley while he was attending St. Joseph's school in this city. When he did not reach Mr. Carley's home about 5 o'clock Tuesday evening efforts were made to locate him by 'phone. It was thought that he might be with his brother, Charles, who is employed by the Emerson-Brantingham company of Fargo, so Mr. and Mrs. Carley did not cause a search to be instituted. Wednesday morning Mr. Carley recalled having heard Paul complain that some boys had annoyed him. This leads them to the theory that they may have been with him when he fell, and fearing trouble if he was hurt, ran away and left him.
"Dr. Humphrey examined the body and found the neck to be broken.
"The funeral services were held from St. Joseph's church Monday forenoon. The sympathy of everyone is extended to the bereaved family in their deep sorrow."12,13
