In checking our death records here in Otter Tail County I did locate the people we spoke of. I will include for you the information provided by each one. You will notice that the early record for James provides little information but this is very common with these early records especially those from the St. Hospital as little information may have been given to them.

The following is the address to write to at the St. Hospital for copies of their medical records for these two people. Mention the dates they died. I found these records to be most helpful! Linda Winter, Records Department, Fergus Falls State Hospital, Fergus Falls, MN 56537.

Good luck in your request to the State Hospital Records.

William Thomson also went by the nickname of "Scotch Thompson".3 He was christened on 3 March 1842 at Parish of Montrose, Forfarshire, Scotland.4,1,2,5 He was employed in a factory from the age of 8 to 16 between 1850 and 1858.2 Between 1858 and 1870 William was a stone cutter and general mason.2 In 1866 William Thomson married Ann Lamb, daughter of John Lamb and Elizabeth Deuchar.3 On 19 June 1868 William Thomson married Ann Lamb, daughter of John Lamb and Elizabeth Deuchar, at Parish of Carmyllie, Forfarshire, Scotland.2,6 Between 1875 and 1879 William and Ann Lamb farmed at Audubon, Becker County, Minnesota.7

The first settlers arrived in Alliance Township in 1879, when it was "nothing but a barren prairie dotted with heaps of buffalo bones, and an occasional slough or creek. There was not a tree to mar the bleakness of that plain and yet those pioneers saw possibilities in a homestead here.
"To the west, about 2-1/2 miles from where the town of Baker now stands, was a small lake filled with rushes, where wild geese nested, and in the distance one could see the scrubby growth of brush along the Buffalo River. North and east was what was known as the Scotch settlement, with the Lambs, Johnsons, Stewarts, Vannetts, William Thompsons, and farther east the Henrys."8
William Thomson and Ann Lamb adopted Jessie Lamb (adopted by William and Ann Thomson) circa 1880.9

"In 1880, only three years after the first pioneers began to settle Elkton Township in Clay County, several members of a farming area known as "Little Scotland" decided it was time to begin religious instruction.
William Thompson, along with several friends, approached David Vannet to find a building large enough to accommodate those who wanted to worship. Vannet suggested the railroad section house located in the southeast quarter of sction 27, several miles south of what is now the community of Downer.
As Thompson recalled some 34 years later, it was probably the only Sunmday School services for miles around. And members made a determined effort to attend. Abraham Henry and his family had to cross a creek by boat, or "ferry" as Thompson fondly recalled it, before walking two miles to reach the section house.
Religious education continued in the section house for some two years, with David Vannet acting as superintendent. Then the section boss was transferred to Barnesville, and a new location had to be found. However, in 1881 a day schoolhouse was built on section 18, about two miles west of Downer. But the new location proved too far for some to attend, and membership dwindled. Services were disrupted for six months, until the day school teacher, 15 year-old Nellie Kittredge of Glyndon, persuaded Thompson to begin teaching Sunday School once more."10
William Thomson was a Presbyterian and helped organize the pioneer congregation in the Elkton area. There's a story that he didn't believe in working on Sunday, yet a neighbor noticed him working in the field one Sunday. The neighbor went over and talked to him, and it turned out William hadn't realized it was Sunday, so having found out, he went home and didn't work on Monday either.7

At Clay County, Minnesota, According to church records, "The people having assembled in the school house, Rev. John Irwin, Presbyterian missionary preached. After the services the following persons declared their desire to be organized into a Presbyterian Church in connection with the Presbytery of Red River Valley." The members were Mr. and Mrs. William Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. John Lamb, Mr. and Mrs. James Vannet, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Pender, Mr. and Mrs. William Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. David Strathdee, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lamb, Mr. and Mrs. William Vannet, and Mrs. Elizabeth Lamb. Rev. A.H. Holloway was moderator and clerk of session; ruling elders were William Thompson, Charles Lamb, and John Lamb.11

William Thomson was naturalized on 2 July 1885.4,12
William Thomson witnessed the will of brother-in-law John Lamb dated 1895.13
William Thomson witnessed the will of his neighbor and connection by marriage Thomas Pender dated 15 March 1895.14 William Thomson was recorded as administrator to the probated estate of his brother-in-law Alexander Lamb on 15 March 1897 at Clay County, Minnesota.15 Between 15 June 1900 and 1910 William farmed at Elmwood Township, Clay County, Minnesota.4 He was recorded as administrator to the probated estate of John Dougal Thomson on 3 August 1903 at Clay County, Minnesota.16 William Thomson left a will dated 19 April 1916 at Clay County, Minnesota.17 He died of bronchial pneumonia on 29 May 1918 at the hospital, Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota, at age 76.1,18,19
