     Rail in San Antonio
San Antonio's first railroad depot was built in the 1870s; the city was "the last major city" in the nation to get rail service. Once the railroad arrived, San Antonio grew rapidly, and by 1900, with over 53,000 residents, it had become the state's largest city. It remained te largest for the next thirty years.
The Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railroad (the GH&SA) offered service to California by 1883 and would become part of the Southern Pacific, employing Al Mory/Fuller. As railroads were partly funded by existing towns, and these were almost nonexistent "south of San Antonio to Laredo or southeast to Corpus Christi" or west of Castroville, the state of Texas gave the GH&SH almost 1.5 million acres to encourage construction. The GH&SA then promoted immigration to settle the land along the train route.
In 1889, the GH&SA was leased to the Southern Pacific, becoming the GH@SA Division (Texas law required Texas railroads to be run as Texas companies). The GH&SA division, as well as other SP lines in Texas, were manaaged in 1893 by Julius Kruttschnitt, and "the first transcontinental service on the reorganized Southern Pacific line began on February 5, 1893." Eventually Kruttschnitt became SP's chairman of the board.
The GH&SH's first San Antonio depot was north of downtown on Austin Street near River Avenue [today Broadway] along a curve in the tracks. The engine and car workshops and roundhouse were built near this depot. The worst locomotive boiler explosion in US history occurred at this location in 1912, during the period that Al Mory/Fuller owned his own machine shop at 516 S. Alamo. The roundhouse and much equipment was destroyed, pieces of the locomotive "were hurled as far as seven blocks," and at least 26 people were killed and 40 injured, mostly employees. Had Al been an SP machinist at this time, he would probably have been among those killed or hurt.
Between 1875 and 1925, rail construction in the region boomed, as was typical throughout the US, but in the late 1920s passenger travel fell as a result of rising automobile ownership and highway construction. "In 1930 San Antonio was served by fifty passenger trains a day, but by 1941 the number dropped to thirty-six."3 Albert F Mory was born on 30 July 1865 at Outagamie County, Wisconsin.4 He was born on 30 July 1865 at Appleton, Wisconsin.5,6 Census data from 1870, 1880, 1920, and 1930 indicate Albert F Mory was born circa 1866 at Wisconsin.7,8,9,10 Census data from 1910 indicate Albert F Mory was born circa 1867 at Wisconsin.11 On 18 March 1895 Albert F Mory married Maud Wright, daughter of Berry Wright and Sally Morris, at Bexar County, Texas. Witnesses were Chas. Artz and Belle Artz.12 Verdi Fuller, Albert F Mory's child, died on 25 May 1899 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.13,14 In June 1900 Albert was a machinist at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.6 Circa 1906 Albert was employed by Alamo Iron Works.15
In 1858 In 1858 Dr. George Frederick Marnoch, from Scotland, bought 875 acres in Helotes. In late 1880, his heirs sold 110 acres to Arnold Gugger for $200. This property, "known as 'the Helotes crossing,' included the intersection of Bandera Road) and Helotes Creek. ... Gugger built his family home, a general store, blacksmith shop, and a saloon, founding downtown Helotes in 1881." It was surrounded by farms and ranches.
The Gugger "homestead," built in 1881, is "the oldest building in downtown Helotes" and was a residence, post office, and business; the earliest known photo of it is from about 1914 and shows that this building (which became the Fullers' home) is identifiable as the local bike shop as of 2020. In 2008 it was designated a Texas Historic Landmark.
Gugger built a limestone general store next to the house, and it was run as a store until 1980, when it became a restaurant.
In 1908, Wilbert "Bert" Hileman bought the downtown. He built a boardinghouse in 1912 (limestone facade added later) and built its first dance hall in 1913 (Hileman's Hall Scenic Loop Pool Room.
In 1916 "Hileman sold the property to the Gottschalck family," who closed the dance hall and ran a mercantile in that building for three years.
In 1919, Kate (Niernberg) Logan bought downtown Helotes as a divorced "feme sole." She then married James Riggs. They "built one of the town's first gas stations and garages," and "began to subdivide and sell off portions of the downtown property."
"In 1923 they sold the northeast portion of the property that included the Gottschalck store, the old Gugger General Store, and the Gugger house to Albert and Maude Fuller."
The Gugger General Store later became Maltsberger's.16 He died of intestinal obstruction on 4 December 1936 at a local hospital, Bexar County, Texas, at age 71.5,4

Metcalf married Phyllis Jeanne Erstad, daughter of Lawrence Erstad and Alice Tollefson, at Clay County, Minnesota.1 Roger A. Metcalf died on 25 April 2015 at Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota, at age 76.3
His obituary appeared and read as follows:
Roger Allen Metcalf died April 25th at the age of 76 at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND, with his family by his side.

Roger was born September 13, 1938 to Banker and Louise (Gilbery) Metcalf in Moorhead, MN. He grew up with his twin brother, his other two brothers and his little sister in rural Glyndon, MN. Roger was nicknamed "Skeeter" by his father when he was a kid. Roger graduated from Glyndon High School in 1956. Following high school, Roger started work at Northern States Power (Xcel Energy) for 10 years. After his dad died he took over his school bus business in 1969. Roger ran the buses for Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton School District for 42 years before retiring. Along with the buses, he also ran his own septic cleaning service in Glyndon from 1977 – 2000. Roger was also a member of the Glyndon Fire Department for 37 years.

Roger married Kathryn Sandland in 1972 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together they lived in Glyndon where they raised their three boys.

Roger enjoyed his fishing trips at the end of each school year with his buddies. He also enjoyed golf, watching old westerns, and tinkering on anything that needed fixing. He could fix just about anything. Roger's biggest thrill was having his family around him. His eyes always lit up when his grandchildren were around. Roger logged thousands of miles and hauled hundreds of kids and always had a smile for everyone. He was very kind and generous and loved by many.

Roger is survived by wife of 43 years, Kathryn; two daughters, Nancy Davis and Jody Girten; three sons, Brad, Brett and Brian Thompson; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis Metcalf, his twin brother, Ron Metcalf, and sister, Margaret Metcalf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, James.
