"OBITUARY," The Journal-Tribune (Logansport (Indiana,), Sunday, July 27, 1913, page 6
"Henry C. Patton was born at Maineville, Warren county, Ohio, September 7, 1844, and died in Logansport, Ind.; July 18, 1913, age 68 years, 10 months and 11 days. He was a veteran of the Civil war, having enlisted at the age of 17 at Camp-Dennison, Ohio, in Co. B, 79th 0. V , and serving until the close of the war, -when he received an honorable discharge.
"On returning home from the service he joined his parents, who had moved to Pipe Creek, Cass county, Ind. Shortly after returning home he united with the United Brethren church in Christ, and lived a Christian life until called to his Heavenly home. Fulton county, Ind. He married Mary A Jones. The wife and mother having died in June, 1881, he was, on November, 1883, again united in marriage to Jane Masterson of Fulton, and to this union three children were born, Goldie M, Silas C of Logansport and William M of South Bend. This wife and mother died June 22, 1907. He remained at the home for about two years longer, when he broke up housekeeping and has been living with his children since.
"He leaves to mourn his loss four children, one grand-daughter, Miss Lucille Patton of Fort Wayne, Three step children, James Masterson of Rochester, Cassel Masterson of Fulton and Nettie Winegardner of Twelve Mile. One sister Mrs. Matilda E Olds, Oregon City, Oregon, one brother Silas D. Patton of El Paso, Illinois, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Except for an affliction of his hearing that was contracted while in the army service by the bursting of a. shell and which, caused almost total deafness, he was a hale and hearty man of his age On July 14, he met with an accident which caused concussion of the brain, and he died on July 18, having never regained consciousness. He was a true and loving companion, a very kind and affectionate father and always had a kind word of greeting for all his friends.
"A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our homes
      Which never can be filled.
"Funeral services were held in the Fulton U. B. church Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Butler. The remains were tenderly laid to in the Fulton cemetery "

Transcription provided by Will Motsinger with a notation that it was “from a letter from Connnie Rices’ great great grandpa, to her great great great grandma Pickering”
      Jan. 17, 1865
      Phillips W. Va.
      Dear Mother
It is with pleasure that I seat myself to write you a few lines, to let you know how I am getting along. I am well at present and I hope when these few lines come to your hand they may find you all well.
I suppose that you have heard of us all getting captured. Well I was in prison two days and two nights, they took me about 30 miles and one of the rebels told me that tomorrow night at this time I would be at Warm Springs, and I thought maby [sic] I would. We stopped to camp about sundown and about one o’clock they started to march, and I asked Sargent Miller of my company if he would try to get away if I would and he said he would try if I would. And we came to a mountain and he started and I followed suit.
The guard saw us and hollered “halt halt you yankee son of a bitch and we didn’t know what he meant. We hadn’t larned there commands yet.
He shot at us several times, but we ran so fast that the bullets couldn’t catch up wit us and we got away. We got parted when they shot at us and we didn’t get to gather [sic] till night. We kept in the mountains for about ten miles and I never saw but one house. I went in and there sat Allen Miller, and we stayed all night with him. He was a good Union man and he never charged us a cent. Well I will tell you who is captured yet: Silas Wolf, Hiram Camphill, Thomas Hipple, George Colville, Billy Colville, Charly Colville, Eli Shear, and all the boys around their but Milton Philips and myself.
They got 42 of our company I tell you there is a small squad of us now I think that we will go somewhere to recuit [sic] up again. I tell you they will have to watch me pretty close if they want to keep me. Eli Shear seen me run and he said there goes Penn. My hat caught on a brush but I didn’t take the time to get it. I went bare headed through the mountains just a whooping and where I stayed all night they gave me a hat. They took all our clothing but I have got plenty now. I went to Beverly and got some blankets and an overcoat. The officers had a dance in Beverly that night, some think that it was done a pourpose. [sic] I think it was a little one sided thing. I think that the officers will be court marshaled, for being so careless. The rebels came in about four o’clock in the morning. We had on some of their garb that was no account at all. They came up to the picket post and the guard halted him and told him to advance and the guard had no more sense than to go right up to him and then they gobbed him up and came charging into camp. We was all asleep when they came in. When they began to shoot it soon woke us up. I jumped up and grabbed my gun and looked out of the shanty, and they were all around us and then I went to pulling on my and when I got one on they commenced hollering “come out here you yankee son of a bitch”. I told them not to be in to big a hurry and when I went out the door they struck at my head with their sabers, but I dodged it and they shot at me twice, but couldn’t hit me. I began to think that I am pretty lucky. Well I must close for the present, I suppose that you hard all about us and you will have me dead a dozen times, but you needn’t be uneasy about Penn he is all right write soon direct to Philips West Va. Company G 34th O.V.I.
      ________________________________________
The Regimental History of the 34th OVI contains the following about the events discussed in the letter.
On Jan. 11, 1865, the post of Beverly, garrisoned by the 34th, which by this time was reduced to 300 men present for duty, and the dismounted portion of the 8th Ohio cavalry, was attacked by the enemy. So secret and sudden was the attack - no alarm whatever being given until the enemy was in the quarters - that resistance was out of the question and nearly every man was at one time a prisoner, though subsequently a great many escaped, favored by the darkness and intense excitement of the occasion. The survivors of this most unfortunate and disgraceful affair were consolidated with the 36th Ohio, the union of the separate organizations dating from Feb. 22, 1865, and in which the old 34th lost its identity.

JAMES H. PIERSON, farmer and stock raiser; P.O. Oakland; born in Warren Co., Ohio, April 6, 1847, where he engaged in farming until Feb. 15, 1863, when, at the age of 15 years, he enlisted as private in Co. A, 12th Ohio V. I., and went forward to battle for the Union; he was in many hard-fought battles, among which were South Mountain, Antietam, 2d Bull Run, Winchester, Cedar Creek, Lynchburg and was with the 16th Army Corps under Gen. Hunter in front of Richmond; at the battle of Winchester, he was wounded and sent to the hospital for two months; at the battle of South Mountain a ball passed through his blouse; at the battle of Lynchburg, a shot struck and carried away his canteen; while scaling a stone wall upon the retreat of the Union army at the battle of Winchester, a solid shot struck the wall beneath him, which demolished the wall, broke the stock of his gun into atoms, and stunted and bruised him badly by the falling stones.; a companion seeing this incident and supposing him killed, so reported to his folks, under which impression they labored until his return at the close of the war; he was mustered out of service with his regiment in August, 1865, at Cleveland, Ohio. After remaining in Ohio a short time he emigrated to Edgar Co., Ill., where he arrived with a capital of 75 cents; he immediately commenced work in a saw mill at $1.25 per day, which business he followed for several years; he removed upon his present place in 1870, where he owns 160 acres of land under cultivation; 116 hear of cattle, upward of 100 hogs, 120 head of sheep and 18 head of horses and mules, which he has accumulated by hard labor, energy and industry, being nobly assisted by the aid of his wife, to whom he was married May 18, 1870; her maiden name was Susan S. Brodie; she was born in Arena, Wis., Jan. 6, 1858; they have four children now living by this union, viz., Ollie M., Flora B., Jackson and William S.; at the time of his marriage he had neither money to procure the license nor defray the expense of the ceremony, the same being advanced by his employer, Mr. R. F. Larimer, a prominent merchant of Oakland, who has nobly rendered him assistance at different times, and of whom he speaks in term of the highest praise.”

" . . . He enlisted in his country's service in the big Civil War in which he served with distinction and bravery nearly the whole period of the war. In one battle he was shot by a bullet that entered below the heart and passed clear through the body yet he recovered and as soon as he was well enough re-entered the service. On one occasion he carried the lieutenant of his company who was wounded and went down, from the battle field on his back while bullets were striking all about. Toward the close of the war he was accidentally cut in the knee by an axe in the hands of a fellow soldier who was chopping wood. He recovered but went through the rest of his life with a stiff knee. He was a member of the 12th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He received his honorable discharge from the service June 12, 1864, at Columbus, O. . . ."

  • Herschel W. Price (1835 - c1898) - 1st Lieutenant, Company D, 27th Infantry Regiment, United States Colored Troops
    • Beers History of Warren County page 1039
"Mr. Price, being a War Democrat, aided the Union cause in various ways; he assisted the Governor in recruiting volunteers for the war, in which he was eminently successful, and was frequntly [sic] sent on secret missions after deserters and derelict army officials; in 1864 he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in the 27th Regiment of United States Colored Troops, and followed the fortunes of the Army of the Potomac in its terrible ordeal of fire, sword and blood from North Anna to Petersburg, Spottsylvania, the Wilderness, Coal Harbor, Mine Run and Petersburg are familiar names to him, and the awful conflicts around and about Richmond are images that are ever impressed upon his mind. • CAUTION:
It is not thought that the Jesse Pugh buried in Miami Cemetery is the one who served in Co C 144th OVI even though "Civil War Soldiers Buried in Warren County, Ohio" by Sue Frary, "Lest We Forget, Volume I" by Mary M. Everhart and "Warren County Ohio Veteran Grave Registration Cards" by Mary M. Everhart all list him that way.  Note the following:
      • The biographical sketch in Beers History of Warren County for Jesse Pugh on page 877 makes no mention of military service
      • Jesse Pugh buried in Miami Cemetery was born 1831.  Jesse Pugh of the 144th OVI was only 21 in 1864
      • Jesse Pugh buried in Miami Cemetery was married to Mary A. (Collett) Pugh who died in 1873) and he lived to 1907
The widow of Jesse Pugh of the 144th OVI was named Mary E. Pugh and filed for a pension 2 Aug 1890 which would suggest that this Jesse was dead by that date
      • The 144th OVI was a 100 day regiment formed from Ohio National Guard Units from Wood and Wyandotte Counties.
