James B. Ireland was enrolled on 19 Jun 1861 at Camp Dennison in
Co. A, 12th OVI to serve for 3 years and mustered into service as
a Private that same day. He was killed at Meadow Bluff, near Fayetteville,
West Virginia on 20 Dec 1863 by a gunshot wound from Bushwackers'
while on Picket Duty near the same place.
James B. Ireland and Mattie E. Ward were married
at Lebanon, Ohio on 12 Jun 1861 by W. W. Colmery, a Minister
of the Gospel. They did not have any children.
On 30 Mar 1864, Mattie E. Ireland, age 24, of Ridgeville, Ohio,
made a declaration in Warren County Probate court in order to obtain
a widow's pension under the Act of 14 Jul 1862. She was awarded
a pension of $8 per month commencing 14 Dec 1863 by Certificate
#24520 dated 14 Jun 1864. William G. Hopkins of
Lebanon and Houston
Hopkins of Morrow gave testimony in support of her claim.

Gazette, December 29, 1881
"Coroner Carey was called to Franklin on Saturday, to hold
an inquest on the body of R. F. Ireland, which was found on the
farm of James Russell, three miles north of Franklin. The Coroner
decided that the deceased was the victim of heart disease. Mr. Ireland
had been selling pictures and was on his war to Mr. Russel's to
deliver one at the time the dreaded messenger overtook him. Mr.
Ireland was formerly postmaster of Franklin and a highly respected
and respectable ditizen."
