" . . . He was a soldier of the Civil War, having enlisted
at Columbus as a recruit in Co. H, 113th Regiment of Ohio Volunteer
Infantry July 20, 1863, Colonel John G. Mitchell in command. From
the first he saw hard Military service having been engaged in
many important battles of the war. He was in the battles of Chickamauga,
Ga., September 19, 20, 1863, Siege of Nashville, Rocky Face Ridge,
Resaca, Doleas, Kennison Mountain. He wes in the bloody battle
of Peach Tree Creek July 20, 1863 where General McPherson was
killed, and fought in the Siege of Atlanta. He also made the famous
march with Sherman to the Sea, and was with his regiment in the
Siege of Savannah. He fought at Bentonville, Ga., and was with
Sherman's army when Johnson surrendered and which ended the War
of the Rebellion. He had his hearing impaired in an engagement
at Ringold Gap, Ga., May 1864. He was honorably discharged at
Louisville, Ky., July 6, 1865 by order of the War Department."
