Margaret (Barton) Leach (Widow
Certificate 108093) - 30 pages
Margaret was awarded a widows' pension of $8 per month beginning
1 Jan 1865 plus an additional $2 per month (until they turned 16)
for each of her two minor sons, Jesse Leach & John Henry Leach.
An affidavit in the pension file by Joseph
O'Neall (also of Co A, 35th OVI) indicates
that he was captured at Chickamauga with John Leach and others and
that they were confined in prison camps together, first in Libby
Prison, then Andersonville and finally in Florence, SC. O'Neall
stated that when he was paroled on 14 Dec 1864 ". . .Leach
was suffering with chronic or Camp Diarrhea and was very feeble
- that while in said prison said Leach frequently spoke of his family
and appeared anxious to join it - that if said Leach was living
he believes that he would have been at home . . ."
Based on O'Neall's testimony the widow received $348.93 for back
pay from 1 Jul 1863 when last paid to 14 Dec 1864, the time of his
death, and $100 Bounty allowed by the Act of July 22, 1861.

M. F. Liddil Obituary - The Western Star, Lebanon, Ohio, Thursday,
2 May 1907
"John M. F. Liddil, 61, died suddenly from heart failure
on last Friday in the National Military Home at Dayton after having
lived there six weeks. His funeral was held from the G. A. R. hall
on Monday afternoon at one o’clock. A staunch little band
of veterans in blue, escorting the body, made again the march to
the last resting place of their comrades.
John Liddil loved the Post and every thing connected with the military
life. He requested that his funeral and burial should be a soldier’s
funeral and burial; and that it should be from the G. A. R. hall
that he loved so well. The blood of his Revolutionary ancestors
was strong in his veins."

Ford email dated 30 Jun 2009 provided links to the above referenced
items as well as the following.
"James Long was born 10 Aug 1839 presumably in Warren County.
His mother's name was definitely Elizabeth as she was later to marry
Jacob Jackson (1804 - 1870) after the death of Jacob's first wife,
Delilah Williams (1804 - 1858). According to other Family
Trees at ancestry.com his father was William Long
(1800 - 1844) who is buried at Carson Cemetery in Warren County.
Those same Family Trees show his mother's maiden name as Elizabeth
Stiles born in Vermont.
James Long is found in the 1850 census living with his mother &
5 siblings along with another woman & her 2 children. In the
1860 census he is living in the household of a George Ent where
he is working as a blacksmith.
On 26 Aug 1866 James Long married his step sister Sarah Jackson
(1844 - 1912) in Warren County. The 1870 census finds James living
and working as a journeyman blacksmith in Harlan Township in Warren
County with his wife Sarah and daughter Olive (who was to die before
1880). Another daughter, Myrta, was born in Warren County in November
of 1870. Their sons Forrest, Clyde, and Otto were born in Iowa in
1873, 1876. and 1877 respectively.
The 1880 census shows the family on a farm in Des Moines Township
in Van Buren County, Iowa.
An 1885 Iowa State Census shows the family living on a farm adjacent
to the farm of James & Drusilla (Jackson) Taylor. Drusilla is
an older sister of Sarah (Jackson) Long.
The 1900 census finds James & Sarah Long living in a home in
Van Buren Township in Van Buren County, Iowa.
James Long died 22 Feb 1902 in Van Buren County, Iowa and was buried
at Pittsburg Cemetery in Pittsburg, Iowa."

Pension
file for Elizabeth Lyon, mother of Thomas Lyon, Private, Company
A, 35th OVI (21 images)
Thomas Lyon enrolled on 15 Aug 1861 at Lebanon, Ohio and was mustered
into Co A, 35th OVI as a Private on 20 Aug 1861 at Hamilton, Ohio
for three years. He was mustered out on 26 Aug 1864 and died at
his home in Lebanon on 1 Jul 1864.
Major Joseph Budd gave testimony
saying “- in the evening one hundred and fifty men were detached
to go after and secure said knapsacks, the said Lyon was one of
that number and while he was performing said duty a shell bursted
in the vicinity of where he was, a piece of it struck him on the
back part of the head causing a severe wound from the effects of
which he commenced to decline and which eventually caused his death.”
Elizabeth (neeTaylor) Lyon, aged nearly 46 years, completed a “Mother’s
Claim for Pension” in Warren County on 20 Jul 1864. She and
Benjamin C. Lyon were married in Warren County on 8 Aug 1841. They
were divorced on 31 Aug 1852. A transcript of the Divorce Petition
from Warren Co Common Pleas Court Journal 1 page 154 is included
in the pension file. She was the mother of their only son, Thomas
Lyon, who died at Lebanon on 1 Jul 1864, from wounds received at
Chickamauga, Georgia on 20 Sep 1863. His condition declined while
in the hospital and he was permitted to go to his home the week
before his death. Additional testimony was given by John Evans,
Mrs. Mary E. Hall and Kate Shugart about Benjamin Lyon abandoning
his family about 12 years ago and of the support Thomas Lyon provided
for his mother for at least 3 years prior to entering the service
and the continued support that he provided for her after enlisting.
Elizabeth Lyon was awarded a mother’s pension (Application
#58624, Certificate #46313) of $8 per month commencing 1 Jul 1864.
Her last pension payment was $12 to 4 Mar 1904. She died 14 Apr
1904.
