in the The Franklin Chronicle 30 Mar 1911,
"The news of the firing upon Fort Sumpter [sic] aroused
the spark of patriotism that slumbered in his breast and he was
among the first to rush to the front, being at that time but 22
years of age. He responded to the first call and in April 1861 offered
himself to his country and was enlisted into Company F, of the 1st
Regiment, O. V. I. He was a brave soldier and bore the brunt of
battle unflinchingly. When the years strife were over he returned
to his home town and resumed the garb of a citizen, without boasting
and without ado. Aside from his service in the Civil War he held
a discharge from five years’ service in the State militia."

" . . . Color Sergeant John B. Emery [of Company C[ had
the lower part of one of his ears shot off, and the flag staff was
struck twice. There were thirty or forty bullet holes through the
colors. Emerey was a splendid man, and his coolness and courage
had been so conspicuous throughout the day that Colonel Kell told
me to tell him he would recommend him for Second Lieutenant at the
first vacancy. When I delivered the message he was binding up the
shattered flag staff, and he blushed like a girl when he heard the
Colonel's word of commendation. Owing to Kell's [later] death it
fell to me to carry out his promise, and Emery was made a 2nd and
then a 1st Lieutenant, and give command of a company. He had the
luck of getting in the way of rebel bullets, for his face was laid
open on Lookout Mountain, and he lost a leg at the battle of Nashville.[10]
