Obituary

Pottstown Daily Ledger, May 20, 1890

John L. Bechtel, a much esteemed citizen of Upper Pottsgrove, residing near Buchananville, died on Sunday, aged 71 years. He had been ill a few weeks, with an abscess on the left arm, from which blood poisoning and heart failure resulted, ending his life. Mr. Bechtel was a farmer, and had held a number of township offices and took for some time and active part in political and business affairs. He joined the volunteer soldiery when a young man, having been a member of Capt. Schaeffer's Light Horse, or First Troop of Berks county, 15 years. His wife, whose maiden name was Sophia Wise, survives him, and there were eight or nine children, of whom six - Rebecca, wife of Lewis Baker, of Pottstown, and George W., John W., William W., Frank W., and Lewis W. Bechtel, are living. Augustus L. Bechtel and Mrs. George R. Yorgey, of Upper Pottsgrove, are brother and sister of deceased, and Lewis L. Bechtel of Limerick Square, a brother. Funeral on Thursday, at 10 a.m.; services at Zion's Reformed Church and interment at Pottstown Cemetery, West End.
