Bucher

Bucher Family of Berks and Montgomery Counties, PA

My immigrant Bucher ancestor was Johan Deitrich Bucher. He was born November 1, 1709 in Switzerland and immigrated with his family to American in 1739. He settled near New Hanover, in present day Montgomery County, PA. He and his wife, Maria Sophia Zurich, who was born February 26, 1702, are buried at the Falkner Swamp Reformed Church. He died May 15, 1769 and she died August 25, 1770.

When Deitrich Bucher died, his estate passed to his widow, three children (George Deitrich, Sebastian and Elizabeth, wife of John Geiger) and the three children of his deceased son Conrad (John, Henry and Catherine). I descend from the son Sebastian who ultimately purchased his father's land from his siblings and niece and nephews.

Sebastian's wife was named Elizabeth, and I have evidence that suggests she was the daughter of Matthias and Eve Keeley. [for more on this, click here.] The children of Sebastian and Elizabeth, as named in Orphan Court documents upon his death, were Jacob, Conrad, Sebastian Jr. (my 4x's great-grandfather), Catherine, John and Henry. Sebastian Sr. died January 16, 1778 and is buried at the Faulkner Swamp Reformed Church.

Sebastian Bucher, Jr. was born September 18, 1770. He married Hannah Baker (or Becker), daughter of John Baker/Becker and Catherine Levengood. The known children of Sebastian and Hannah are: Elizabeth, Christine, Maria, John and my 3x's great-grandfather Henry. Sebastian Jr. and Hannah lived in Douglass Township, Berks County, PA. Sebastian died October 29, 1822. Hannah died December 22, 1856. In her later years she lived in Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA with her son Henry and his family.

Henry Bucher was born November 14, 1809 and baptized June 3, 1810 at Trinity Reformed Church in Pottstown. He was a shoemaker by trade. On November 10, 1833, he married Hannah Moser, daughter of Henry and Catherine. She was born February 10, 1816 and baptized August 16, 1816 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Pottstown, PA. They had the following children: Sarah (b. 1834), Catharine (b. 1836), Susanna (b. 1838), John (b. 1840), Henry (b. 1843), Sebastian (b. 1846), Hannah (b. 1848) and Lewis Herman (b. 1850). Hannah Moser Bucher died July 29, 1852 and on March 4, 1854, Henry married Elizbeth Weiler, widow of Solomon Bickel. Elizabeth died on February 26, 1873, and Henry married for his third wife Sarah Davidheiser, widow of Jacob Eagle. Henry died on November 17, 1895 and is buried in Pottstown Cemetery (East) with his first two wives.

Catharine Bucher, daughter of Henry Bucher and his first wife Hannah Moser, was born February 18, 1836 and baptized on May 14, 1848 at Trinity Reformed Church in Pottstown. She married Augustus L. Bechtel about 1852. They had 12 children, one of which was great-grandmother Emma Bechtel who married William G. Sassaman. Their daughter Mary Ann Sassaman was my grandmother. Catharine Bucher Bechtel and her husband Augustus are buried in Pottstown Cemetery (East). He died July 23, 1900. She survived him by 5 years, dying July 19, 1905.
