Evans
Evans Family of Limerick, Montgomery County, PA
My immigrant Evans ancestor was William Evans of Gwynedd and Limerick township in Montgomery County, PA. William's grandfather, John Evans, was from Carmarthenshire in Wales. As a reward for performing valuable military service, he received a land grant in Limerick, Ireland and was living there by 1628. He married Ellen DeVerdon. He died in 1632, leaving two sons and three daughters. His younger son was John. This John had three sons, the middle one being William, who immigrated to the American colonies.
William Evans, his wife Ann and young son William, arrived in Philadelphia in 1698 and originally settled in Gwynedd. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Limerick, PA. It is said that Limerick, PA was named after their native homeland in Ireland. The elder William died before 1716, and his wife Ann died in 1720. The children named in Ann's will (which was probated in Philadelphia, PA) were William Jr., Owen, George, Elizabeth and David.
Visit the biography of my grandmother Ada Evans Garner for more information on the Limerick PA Evanses in my direct line.
Evans Family of East Nantmeal, Chester County, PA
In addition to the Evans family who lived in Limerick township, I am also a descendant of Abner Evans, who was born in Wales, and came to the colonies and eventually settled in East Nantmeal, Chester County, PA. Abner married Sarah Thomas the daughter of Rev. Owen Thomas and his wife Eleanor in 1751. They were the parents of Mary (who married Jeremiah Evans, from yet another Evans family), Rachel (who married Evan James), Jesse (who may have married Mary Jones), Griffith (who may have married a Miss Streeper), Owen (who may have married Mary L. Johns), George (who first married a Miss Thomas and second married Sarah Hunter, widow of William R. VanLeer), and Eleanor Evans.
Of the above children, Rachel Evans and her husband Evan James are my fifth great-grand parents. For more information on this line, visit the biography of my grandfather Lawrence O. Garner. His mother was Alice B. James, the great-great granddaughter of this couple.
