James

James Family of Chester County, PA

My immigrant James ancestor was a John James who was presumably from Wales. His wife was Lettice. This James family was of the Baptist faith. Originally they were associated with the Great Valley Baptist Church, and later the Vincent Baptist Church in Chester Springs. Their children were Elinor, who married David Davies, William, Elizabeth, who married George David, John, and Mary, who married Jeremiah Price.

The son William James was born about 1725. He was married twice. The first wife was Hannah Williams, daughter of Evan. The second wife may have been Elizabeth Bell. William died in 1798 in East Nantmeal, Chester County, PA.

One of William's sons with his first wife Hannah Williams was Evan James. Evan was born April 1756 and died November 27, 1825. He married Rachel Evans, daugther of Abner and Sarah (Thomas) Evans. Evan James was a lieutenant who served in the Revolutionary War. He and his wife and at least two of his children are buried in the French Creek Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery, which is located off of Route 23, near Knauertown.

Visit the biography of my grandfather Lawrence O. Garner for more information on the Jameses in my direct line. His mother was Alice James.
