• The roster of the Dutch Settlers Society of Albany states that Hendrick Martense Wiltsie (van Copenhagen) settled in the Albany area in 1658.
  On 23 July 1658 he was sued at Fort Orange (now Albany) by Pieter Bronck for fl. 170 for beer and wine received. On 13 Aug 1658 at Fort Orange, 15 Mohawks requested that someone who spoke French well accompany them and their French captives during the negotiations on an exchange of prisoners at Trois Rivieres in New France. Hendrick Martensen (called "a soldier named Henry Martin" in a letter he carried) agreed to make the trip. The last record of him in the Albany area is dated 21 Aug 1659 when, Hendrick Martense van Copenhagen transferred to Lusac Dirckse, fifty guilders received in the fatherland for his monthly wages and subsistence due him.
  Hendrick moved from Fort Orange to New Amsterdam late in 1659, and his marriage intention is recorded at the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam on 10 Jan 1660.⁷
• Soon after his marriage Hendrick joined the military garrison at Kingston in Ulster County, New York (known at various times as Esopus, Wiltwyck, and Swanenburg). In March 1661 Hendrick was assigned No. 2 of the New Lots at Esopus (now Hurley, N.Y.). His name appears on the muster roll of 15 Jun 1661. Hendrick was sued on 18 April 1662 by Anthony Cruepel for wages, and was sued on 12 Dec 1662 by Jan Broersen for six months rent due.
  On 7 Jun 1663, the Esopus Indians attacked Wiltwyck and destroyed the "new Village." Among those taken captive was a child of Hendrick Martensen. "Hendrick Martensen, soldier, on the farm," was among those reported as killed. However, he was not killed, but was among those captured. Hendrick and his child were probably among those taken from the Indians in Sept. 1663.
  On 29 Dec 1663 Hendrick was sued by Tjerck Claesen de Witt (the schout) for ten guilders due for Domine Blom's salary. Hendrick's reasons for not contributing were that he was a soldier in the service of the Company, and that he had been taken captive by the savages. The Court disagreed and ordered Hendrick to pay. His service as a soldier ended with the English takeover in 1664, however, Hendrick was a corporal of the burgherguard in 1665. On 28 April 1668 he signed a deposition as one of the burghers at Wiltwyck, this being the last record of Hendrick in Ulster County.
  His four youngest children were baptized, beginning on 24 Nov 1669, at the Dutch Reformed Church in New York City. His name appears on the Newtown (Long Island) rate lists for 1675, 1678 and 1683. On 15 Sep 1681 he purchased a farm of 38 1/2 morgens near Hellgate, from Capt. Thomas Levall. According to Riker, Hendrick sold this property to his son Teunis in 1706,a nd in 1852 it was owned by the Polhemus family. Hendrick Martensen was one of the patentees mentioned in Dongan's Patent to Newtown, 25 Nov 1686. He lived in Newtown from 1669 until after 1700, and probably until his death.⁸
